After 6 Feet Beneath The Moon in 2013 and last year's A Place 2 Drown under his real name Archy Marshall King Krule return with a new album this fall.

“Drifting and seeping through the cracks of South London like the album title, King Krule casts an unflinching eye over his kingdom, transforming his observations of all the disorientation and heartbreak of his youth into piercing narratives and poetry that are both startlingly honest and brutally beautiful,” a press statement for the album reads. “With The OOZ, Marshall finally takes the crown as poet laureate for the dazed and confused generation, painting a bleak and sometimes harrowing picture of a rapidly splintering city.”

Underground insider tip

Before the heady melodies of their haunting songs permeated the airwaves and captivated audiences around the world, the mysterious band King Krule had humble origins bubbling on the bustling streets of London. Led by enigmatic singer-songwriter Archy Marshall, the band’s early days were marked by an atmosphere of creative exploration and artistic self-discovery. In the gritty underbelly of the city, Marshall, then a young and introspective soul, honed his musical skills, armed with a uniquely raw voice and a penchant for introspection. It was during this time that he began to weave the various influences – jazz, punk, hip hop and others – into an intriguing tapestry that would later form King Krule’s distinctive sound. The band’s early performances were intimate affairs, held in dimly lit underground venues where only a select few were privy to the intense emotions Marshall infused into his lyrics. With each evocative word and passionate guitar strum, he painted a vivid portrait of urban alienation and personal turmoil, punctuated by atmospheric melodies. In those days before fame, King Krule was a hidden gem known only to those who knew their way around the underground music scene.

Dark Wave King

Known for his distinctive baritone voice and introspective lyrics, Marshall weaves elements of punk, jazz, hip-hop and darkwave into a sound all his own. In 2013, King Krule released his debut vinyl 6 Feet Beneath the Moon. This critically acclaimed album showcased Marshall’s raw talent and ability to blend genres effortlessly. Tracks like Easy Easy and Out Getting Ribs caught the attention of music lovers worldwide with their haunting melodies and introspective lyrics. Following the success of his debut, King Krule returned in 2017 with The Ooz. This vinyl delves deeper into Marshall’s psyche, exploring themes of loneliness, alienation and urban decay. Songs like Dum Surfer and Czech One showed his evolution as a songwriter and his ability to create atmospheric, textured compositions. In 2020, King Krule released Man Alive! This record marked a significant evolution in Marshall’s sound, incorporating elements of electronic music and experimenting with different production techniques. Tracks like Cellular and Alone, Omen 3 demonstrated his willingness to push boundaries and defy genre conventions. His discography paints a vivid portrait of an artist unafraid to explore the depths of his emotions and musical influences. June 9, 2023 saw the release of his latest vinyl Space Heavy, which was created between 2020 and 2022 and tells of “the space between”, places haunted by dreams full of love.

Therapist and musician

Marshall’s unique blend of genres including punk, jazz and hip hop, combined with his distinctive deep voice and introspective lyrics, created a soundscape that resonated with listeners around the world. One of King Krule’s most notable contributions was the revival of the indie music scene. With his raw and emotionally charged performances, Marshall brought fresh energy to a genre that had become somewhat stagnant. His music not only appealed to indie audiences, but also attracted fans from diverse backgrounds and crossed typical genre boundaries. King Krule not only revitalized the indie music scene, but also influenced a new generation of musicians. His moody and atmospheric soundscapes and confessional songwriting style inspired countless artists to experiment with blending different genres and pushing creative boundaries. In addition, King Krule’s introspective lyrics resonated with listeners. Marshall’s ability to articulate complex emotions and explore themes of isolation, mental health, and societal pressures struck a chord with a generation struggling with similar issues. His honesty and vulnerability fostered a sense of connection between artist and listener, offering comfort and reassurance to those who felt misunderstood.
