We're delighted to bring Slaughter Beach, Dog's cult classic "Motorcycle.LPG" back in print after a brief time spent OOP. This release bridged Jake Ewald from the first Slaughter Beach, Dog LP, the scrappy, noodly "Welcome" to fan favorite "Birdie." The .LPG version of this release (initially released as Motorcycle.JPG on a small-run 7") includes SBD tracks "Your Cat," "104 Degrees," "Building The Ark," as well as a cover of The Superweaks' (Lame-O Records) "Glowing." The B-Side of the .LPG includes a 12 minute live version of 104 Degrees that is available exclusively on vinyl. The vinyl art has beautiful spot-gloss on the photo of Jake's hands and the Ocean in Australia, taken by yours truly from a cocktail bar. We sat and talked about Patti Smith. Not to spoil all the goodies here, but the vinyl insert serves as postcards you can use to send friends and enemies mail. - Lame-O Records

Slaughter Beach, Dog started as a side project for Jake Ewald, one of Modern Baseball's two singer/songwriters. The band was born out of a case of writer's block, Jake used the first LP to experiment with writing from the point of view of fictional characters in the fictional town of Slaughter Beach to break off from the ultra-personal technique he'd developed in his main project. After Modern Baseball announced their hiatus last year, Slaughter Beach, Dog became Jake's main vehicle, giving him a chance to go all in on developing as a songwriter. Now free of the restrictions of being in a band with certain expectations already attributed to it, Birdie is Jake's introduction to his next chapter. Combining writing styles and flowing free between truth and fiction, the album takes Jake's signature mouth-full writing style, adds in some new influences from bands like Wilco, The Weakerthans, Jets To Brazil and Pedro The Lion, and comes out with something completely fresh.

As Yours Are The Only Ears, Susannah Cutler is reaching for a fresh start. For years, the singer-songwriter sauntered through her every day, stretching to please the people in her life and disconnecting as a means of survival. It wasn't until early 2020 after taking on the tasks set out in The Artist's Way, that Cutler experienced a reckoning. When was the last time she was truly honest with herself? And what is she so afraid of? Piercing through the gauze of an almost simulated existence, Cutler pieced together a face she could finally recognize in the mirror and began crafting what would become her second album, We Know The Sky. Here, her shadow no longer lags behind, but instead immerses itself to flourish into a beautifully complicated, truthful reality. We Know The Sky is like walking through a darkened hallway into the light; the sun on tentative closed eyes, slowly opening to take in the new horizon. It's an album that doesn't shy away from the hard work it takes to walk past every door, and greet whoever you find in there. Teaming deliverance with delicacy, Cutler knows that getting to know yourself--the real you--means you will find both the light and the dark. But it's not about shunning one for the other, but rather combining them to create a palette that is able to color the world in a way that you finally understand. "Songwriting for me has always been a way for me to say things out loud that I'm afraid to say otherwise," she says. We Know The Sky is Cutler peeling away the mask of who she thought she should be, and instead embracing the beautiful, ever-changing kaleidoscope of who she actually is.

Philly's Modern Baseball have been on every 2012 year-end list, and finally we have their debut full-length record SPORTS! The band's first full length is uniquely modern, capturing a sort of love and loneliness, as it conveys how it feels to be young and hopeless in modern America. Singer Brendan Lukens' words are presenting familiar narratives with clever, vivid images and put a contemporary twist on universal conflicts, love lost and love found, epic and disastrous nights, and the search for connection and purpose.

One amp. One mic. One person. Countless hooks. That's the Dazy formula. Since first releasing the single "Bright Lights" in August 2020, Dazy mastermind James Goodson has been writing, recording, and releasing new music like a man on the hunt to find the best pop hook, and he won't stop until he's put all of them into his songs. Showcasing a unique set of influences, Dazy's sound marries thumping drum machine beats, blasts of feeding back guitar, and sugar-sweet hooks into something that sounds like Godflesh covering Oasis_or maybe the other way around. With lean songwriting that recalls Teenage Fanclub but a home-recorded production style better suited for Big Black, Goodson builds a constant churn of abrasive, consuming noise and then makes it catchier than anyone else would ever dare to. Dazy released two EPs, Revolving Door and The Crowded Mind, in 2021, the latter of which landed on Stereogum's `25 Great EPs From 2021' list.' Ever-prolific, all of those songs and more appeared on Dazy's August 2021 collection, "maximumblastsuperloud: The First 24 Songs" on Convulse Records, which was also included on multiple year-end lists in the USA. "...sticky, fuzzy, overwhelmingly catchy power-pop, and it's got hooks for days" - Stereogum

Shannen Moser wants to have a conversation: with their pastselves, their present self, their undesignated, unfurling future selves; with the trees that adorn their old street, and the door they used to call home; with the shadows of lovers-turned-to-friends and the overwhelming cacophony of abrupt change. They're drawing a map but the port of call is cloudy and indistinct. It's while traveling along these nebulous contours that their latest album The Sun Still Seems To Move forms a kind of physicality, of outstretched giving hands, that offers a guide through the fog. Here, Moser examines the disorientating, challenging task of trying to hold onto ourselves - and everything else - all at once. But this isn't a fatalistic journey of melancholy or apprehension. Instead, Moser celebrates the small steps and the unwavering perseverance that makes it all worthwhile. Moser's previous albums Oh, My Heart (2017) and I'll Sing (2018) were praised for their careful, intimate arrangements that showcased their sharp, interpersonal narration and timeless lush vocals. On The Sun Still Seems To Move, their first release in four years, Moser takes the arresting simplicity of their past LPs to form a malleable foundation, and combines it with orchestral swells and poignantly-rich harmonies. The Sun Still Seems to Move is an album of reckoning with death and trauma, with all the shapes that love can take and all the people we've been and will become. It's a record of regret and relief, unlocking every facet of feeling with an unabashed yet tender vigor. It's watching the clouds bend to a new shape and still staying outside. It's cry-laughing on the phone to an old friend, and trying to trust yourself again. By leaning into-and being at the whim-of this kind of vulnerability, Moser is able to navigate the spaces between the losses to produce a truly honest and lustral work. "Holding space for all of these feelings is confusing, but I think that's what makes the world turn," they explain. "It's love and grief existing in tande...

Mo Troper is truly one of a kind, and that's never been more apparent than on his fifth full-length, the winkingly titled MTV. Arriving hot on the heels of his 2021 full-length, Dilettante, the album finds the Portland, OR-based power pop extraordinaire diving further into home-recorded immediacy to make a record that feels like a strikingly direct conduit to the world of Mo-where heartbreak, hilarity, and hooks all go hand-in-hand. MTV hurtles through 15 songs in just 31 minutes, with most of the tracks never even coming close to the three-minute mark. The sequence feels like a combination of a fever dream and a travel diary, intertwining tales of romantic longing with the ups and downs of cross-country touring. Songs like "Across The USA," "Royal Jelly," or "Coke Zero" unravel the headaches and heartbreaks, often alternating between unflinching emotional details and legitimately funny one-liners. "I feel like I'm just in this mode of rebelling against the expectation for artists to be emotionally or aesthetically cohesive," Troper says. "I think about all my favorite records and songwriters, and they're often these people who would have really depressing stuff and then insane moments of levity that don't get talked about as much. I want to make music that's emotional but also campy or sarcastic or resonates in other ways. I'm like, 'you know what, it's all me.'"

Some bands reveal themselves immediately, coming right out and winningthe listener over the moment they hit play. And then there are bands thatopen up with time, rewarding repeat listens with new lyrical and musicalthrills on every return. Glaswegian jangle pop extraordinaires U.S. Highballhave the rare distinction of being both. The duo specialize in the kind ofinstantly charming songwriting that makes a great first impression, and aneven better second, third, and beyond. Their songs are equal parts wit andheart, full of pop culture nods, inside jokes, and hooks upon hooks. NowU.S. Highball's third full-length, A Parkhead Cross of The Mind, leans evenfurther into their unique dichotomy, offering another goldmine of discoveryset to their finest batch of pop gems to date.Made up of James Hindle and Calvin Halliday, U.S. Highball is the result of a17-year friendship. Upon meeting in 2005, the two quickly bonded over theiroverlapping musical interests, and when their previous group, The Pooches, began to fizzle, they soon found a new creative chemistry working as a duo."We have pretty much identical tastes in music, and culture in general, so wewere both on the same page as to what we wanted the band to sound like,"Hindle explains. "It's like having all the fun parts of being in a band, withoutany of the hassle!" The prolific songwriters released their debut LP as U.S.Highball, Great Record, in 2019, and quickly followed it with 2020's Up ToHigh Doh.When crafting A Parkhead Cross of The Mind, U.S. Highball set out to makea louder, punchier version of their sound without sacrificing the idiosyncraticcharm of their previous releases. They upgraded their gear and home recordingsetup and got to work, whittling down 40 potential songs to 12, whichwere then meticulously honed. "We definitely prefer to record at home,"says Hindle. "It gives us unlimited time to let the songs gestate for longerwithout the financial and time constraints of being in a studio." This unhur...

Modern Baseball was formed in 2011 by friends and guitarists Jacob Ewald and Brendan Lukens, who were soon joined by Ian Farmer on bass and Sean Huber on drums. The band self-released their first EP The Nameless Ranger in 2011 while still in high school. Shortly after the members relocated to Philadelphia to attend college and quickly gained a strong following in the Philadelphia music community, teaming up with locals Marietta to release the Couples Therapy split in the spring of 2012. Modern Baseball released their debut full-length Sports later that year on Lame-O Records, which they self-recorded and produced. After spending the summer of 2013 touring heavily across the US, the band headed into Studio A in Philadelphia to self-record You're Going to Miss It All. Mixed by Jonathan Low at Minor Street Recordings, mastered by Will Yip and released through Run For Cover Records, You're Going to Miss It All features 12 tracks that showcase the band's signature witty indie-pop.

Being in a band is often a cheap alternative to therapy. It allows an outlet for feelings its members can't articulate. It provides a space for physical inhibitions to be let loose. For Big Nothing's Liz Parsons, the need for that mental nourishment became evident when she moved to Philadelphia. She found herself fitting into the city nicely, yet felt isolated and empty. Her new home was one of America's musical epicenters - a big reason she moved there - and she didn't plan on wasting any time filling the indie rock shaped hole in her life. She shot a text to guitarist Pat Graham, who recently had a conversation with drummer Chris Jordan about starting a new project. Once Matt Quinn caught wind of the three playing music together - he begged to bring his Rickenbacker tone into the mix. After jamming out some Voice Memo riffs - Big Nothing was here to stay. Sonically, big nothing find themselves borrowing cues from indie mainstays like Superchunk and The Replacements. It's clear that they are trying to unhinge themselves from patterns they've repeated in the past, but they're also not afraid to blast the tried and true methods of rock and roll. Their live shows mirror the honesty of their albums. Big Nothing is a genuine rock band.

House OF Confusion is Trace Mountains' third album & the rugged, earthier follow-up companion to 2020's Lost in the Country. The songs & arrangements on House OF Confusion lean ever-more into the rootsier impulses of "Lost in the Country", relying heavily on live recording & instrumentation that features the acoustic guitar & pedal steel. This shift reveals a new, understated complexity within the songs & the tangible, tactile nature of the performances, evoking the free-flowing nature of influences like Tom Petty or Built to Spill, all-throughout imbued with the energy of Country icon Emmylou Harris' cult classic & band favorite, Wrecking Ball. The album is comprised of road songs, rock songs, country songs, religious songs, disco songs, satanic songs, jams & simple tunes, laid out in careful presentation _ to use at your leisure.

Wouldn't it be nice to listen to something good? It's an elusive desire, one of many in our increasingly bleak modern world. Could songwriter Matt Scottoline harness that desire and turn it into some-thing tangible, i.e. a new Hurry record full of good music? One thing is for sure: He knew he had to try. And another thing is for sure, too: He could. Scottoline recorded Hurry's fourth studio LP Fake Ideas in the days leading up to the outbreak of Covid-19, not that the two are linked in any way, with bandmates Rob DeCarolis (Univox), Justin Fox (Cherry, Kite Party), and Joe DeCarolis (Psychic Teens). Fake Ideas is the successor to Hurry's Every Little Thought, released on Lame-O Records in 2018, which is an album that could be considered very successful when judged by certain parameters. Fake Ideas maintains the band's beloved anxiety-ridden affability, while taking a more guitar-driven route to dive deeper into their classic power pop sound. If you're the sort of person who needs accolades to make up your mind about whether or not you think something is good, have no fear Hurry has them, and they do not judge you for your self-doubt. Pitchfork once described Hurry, which cites influences in Teenage Fanclub, Oasis, Gin Blossoms, and Guided by Voices, as "pure power pop in the vein of the Posies and Matthew Sweet." The band has been featured on NPR All Songs Considered, and has had its songs used in TV shows like FXX's Man Seeking Woman. For a while, one of their songs was even in heavy rotation in Gap stores. "It wasn't even an upbeat song," Scottoline says of the song. "It was a pretty somber one. Why would people want to shop with that on?" Gap Inc. has subsequently closed a majority of its stores. Once again there is no data showing the two are necessarily linked. Fake Ideas marries traditional love songs with an exploration of Scottoline's experience with his anxi-ety disorder, and how those misleading thoughts, ideas, and feelings can create a false image of one's own world. He notes that these anxiety-focused songs can sometimes be love songs, too. "Ugh," he says, regarding being forced to provide that sincere description. With Fake Ideas, you will be able to quench your elusive desire. You will be able to relax. You will be able to say, "it is nice to listen to something good."

"In the corner of your vision, there's a daydream on a mission"says Russell Edling in the beginning of "Park (Rye)".Humming vibrations crescendo around the words floating inthe air and a listener may visualize a flower growing in fastmotion, or a dog running backwards, lava flowing, childrenjumping rope in the evening sun. Suddenly these visionsplumet and new frenetic images appear as drums, percussion, and full accompaniment burst into space. The band hasarrived, a theme recurrent in Golden Apples' new record,Bananasugarfire.A listener might hear echoes of the Velvet Underground, Stereolab,Stone Roses, Yo La Tengo, but there is more goingon than just a studied homage to indie rock's progenitors. The themes of doubt and bewilderment found on previousalbums are still present, but they are thrown into a kalaedoscopewith beams of positivity, hope, and optimism.

Slaughter Beach, Dog's new album `Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling' finds Jacob Ewald hitting his songwriting stride. A decade into steadily releasing records through Slaughter Beach, Dog and Modern Baseball, Ewald spent hundreds of hours over the past few years to listen purposefully, diving deep into the worlds of Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Neil Young and many other "classic guys" that he hadn't spent ample time with. Ewald also spent a similar amount of hours meticulously assembling a band fit for these new songs, and he found what he was looking for. The result is `Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling' - a timeless record, and Slaughter Beach, Dog's finest - self produced and capturing Ewald and the band at the height of their powers. Ewald's eye for detail is on display, `Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling' is filled with gorgeous imagery and vivid worlds are built within each song. Out on longtime label home Lame-O Records,...

Purple w/ Blue Splatter vinylHurry has grafted the best qualities of '90s bubblegum power pop-the pitch-perfect songwriting, the pop-rock sheen, the borderline saccharine vocal melodies-onto something far more raw and emotionally resonant. Don't Look Back is striking in its tenderness and candor-approximately half of the lyrics on the record concern the deterioration of an 11-year relationship Scottoline was in, with the other half being a celebration of new love. The first words Scottoline sings, in opening track "Didn't Have to Try," is essentially a statement of theme: "And we're back at the beginning / Never thought I'd see a face like that again / It attacks when we're not ready / And I won't play it safe this time." This is pop music about actual feelings which means it's automatically better than most pop music. It is challenging and addictive. There is not a single moment on Don't Look Back that isn't completely drenched in melody and emotion. "Parallel Haunting" evokes the tuneful ache of golden age Evan Dando; "Little Brain" sounds like golden age Evan Dando and golden age Noel Gallagher. Don't Look Back is, in a word, bittersweet, with melodies that feel like a jackhammer on your brain's pleasure center and lyrics that feel like getting slapped in the heart.

Limited Swirl Vinyl No Thievery, Just Cool is the fourth album in as many years from Glaswegian jangle-pop outfit U.S. Highball, comprised of lifelong friends Calvin Halliday and James Hindle. This time around, the boys decided to put the neighbourhood to work, enlisting a host of friends and external collaborators to beef up their characteristically propulsive pop nuggets. Jacob Ewald - frontman of recent tourmates Slaughter Beach, Dog - duets with James on a soaring version of The Mr. T Experience's Big, Strange, Beautiful Hammer, and Manda Rin - one third of Glasgow indie legends Bis - lends her trademark emphatic yelp to the effervescent Tiny Partick. On album closer Out of Time, Aussie stalwarts Darren Hanlon and Shelley Short provide sun-soaked harmonies that elevate the song's ruminative coda to something transcendent, while Joe Howe - typically known to traffic in jittery electronics - unleashes a rousing saxophone solo slap-bang in the middle of Paris 2019.The record was masterfully mixed by Melbourne-based legend-in-the-making Snowy - best known for his work with The Ocean Party and Ciggie Witch - whose ardent ear for detail helped breath fresh life into the songs during the mixing process, bringing out the best in Halliday and Hindle's unorthodox arrangements. Mastering duties were handled once again by Ian Farmer - also of Slaughter Beach, Dog - further cementing his status as the band's de-facto third member. As ever, U.S. Highball have fashioned a densely-populated lyrical world that's at once surrealistic and chock-full of kitchen sink detail, with songs frantically ushering the listener from Buchanan Street to Boulevard Saint-Michel in the space of a single hook-stuffed chorus. Irresponsible Holiday - arguably the album's most urgent earworm - revels in the workaday minutiae of office life, the aforementioned Paris 2019 alludes to brushing up against overly-opinionated strangers on the streets of the City of Lights, while Marjorie Says is a disarmingly earnest love letter to Calvin's dog...

Sean Huber, best known as the drummer of the beloved & defunct band Modern Baseball, has been releasing music with his band Steady Hands since 2013. Back for the first time since 2018 with new album "Cheap Fiction," Huber pays homage to all of the deities you'd expect someone with a New Jersey birth certificate and a dog named Bruce to worship, with rollicking saxophone and piano over tales of hard-on-their-luck neighborhoods, and stadium-rock-ready guitar zaps over odes to the misrepresented people of Florida. He grapples with lapsed religion like so many with Irish names have done before him. And he fits in real nicely with the modern heroes of Philadelphia's punk scene, blending the best of heartland rock and straight-up punk with his own penchant for the tropical. Huber's lyrics tell stories of a very real world where people in power use it for evil, the people who need help don't get it, but the person at home makes life beautiful despite it all, and there are plenty of friends to commiserate with. He found inspiration in the world around him, including history and politics books. The album reflects his belief in balance and his ethos that all great comedy is based on truth.

In 2020, Steve Ciolek's long-running and much loved group The Sidekicks called it a day, and he found himself without a band for the first time in much of his adult life. Ciolek had never stopped writing, but now with endless possibilities ahead he found himself creating at a different pace. As his well of potential songs began to grow, Ciolek brought in some familiar faces to help hone them into an album, recruiting The Sidekicks' Matty Sanders to play drums and Saintseneca mastermind Zac Little to help with writing, recording, and production.Infinite Spring is bursting with that sense of discovery and promise without sacrificing the warmth that's always made Ciolek's songwriting feel so timeless and satisfying. The record feels like an amalgam of his many musical interests, woven together into something unique; throughout, sparse folk intersects with soulful indie, and the intricate arrangements and sweeping hooks of '60s and '70s pop rock overlap with the charming looseness of midwest punk. And just as so many of Ciolek's musical inspirations feel evergreen, so does his lyrical focus: falling in love.
