Last year, we got together with The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision’s RE:VIVE initiative for the second time, inviting four local artists to breathe new life into four archival films from the Sound and Vision and EYE Filmmuseum archives. Jordan GCZ, Suzanne Kraft, Parrish Smith and Upsammy were all assigned short animated films dating back to 1921. The films and their new scores debuted at EYE on August 2nd as part of Dekmantel Festival 2018. Unsurprisingly, each artist imparted their unique styles onto the films that they previously had no relation with. From Suzanne Kraft's sparse atmospherics that have become more apparent in his new SK U KNO project to Jordan GCZ’s free flowing hardware jams. Parrish Smith showed his contemplative side and sparse orchestrations that he demonstrated on his RE:VIVE release, Genesis Black, a sonic departure from his bombastic releases and DJ-sets while upsammy showed yet again her deft hand for melody and texture, a style that dominates all her releases to date.
These four scores can live apart from their films, fitting seamlessly into each artists' growing catalogs of work. But when combined, it’s as if the films and music were made simultaneously with the artist and filmmaker together in the same room. Dekmantel and RE:VIVE are proud to present these new works as the electronic music scene in The Netherlands continues to show its multifaceted talent that continues to expand far beyond the dance floor.

After the release of the successful soundtrack for the TV series Gomorra (which was aired outside Italy as well) the Italian combo Mokadelic returns with a brand new score, Sulla Mia Pelle, for one the most controversial movies around. Based on the despicable history of Stefano Cucchi, literally killed in prison by a bunch of policemen, the album renews the cinematic style of Mokadelic through a series of almost dramatic instrumental sketches. Equally informed by the post-rock of luminaries such as Godspeed You Black Emperor and Explosions In The Sky - not to mention the subtle rhythms of contemporary IDM (Boards Of Canada first came to mind) - the band delivers their signature with several epic moments. That is the real companion to a tragic feature film.

"Rob wanted the world of The Northman to feel harsh and uncomfortable, and for everything to feel like it was caked in mud and dry blood, so it was crucial for the score to mirror that." Composers Robin Carolan (Tri-Angle Records) and Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel) were given a task of epic proportions when director Rob Eggers (The VVitch, The Lighthouse) asked them to create the score for his ambitious and highly anticipated new film The Northman, releasing on April 22nd. They needed to make a score that both honored the immense research that had gone into the authenticity of this Viking era period piece and complimented the cinematic maximalism of the film for a modern audience. The artists stretched themselves to the depths of their creativity and the resulting album is a gorgeous sonic tableaux that places the listener right in the center of the film. While arranging the score the composers consulted musician and ethnographer Poul Hoxbro for inspiration and insight into the history of Viking music. Having backgrounds in left field electronic music, Robin and Sebastian felt liberated by the constraint of using a small selection of musical tools for this piece. "Electronic music has almost limitless potential when it comes to making sounds and that's obviously an incredible thing, but you can also go down the wormhole and get lost in it sometimes. There's no risk of that happening when you only have a few primary instruments to draw upon." Robin remarked. They utilized traditional instruments such as the tagelharpa, langspil, kravik lyre, and säckpip to build the cinematic world of The Northman but they also took creative freedoms in adding instruments likes drums, which some academics believe wouldn't have played a big part in Viking musical culture, simply due to the lack of archaeological evidence of actual drums. "One of the pieces we wrote was intended to emulate the sound of a bullroarer; an ancient instrument used in sacred rituals or in battle to intimidate enemies. It makes a really disorienting roaring vibrato sound and low frequencies capable of traveling insane distances." Robin says when asked about one of the more unique aspects of the score. Everyone involved put so much effort into both their research and their creativity and this richness is evident in every track. The album as a whole is a cinematic masterpiece of sound and ambiance, both gorgeous and disturbing, like the film it so beautifully accompanies.

Scottish synth pop sensations Chvrches have a history of commissioning remixes for each of their chart topping albums. Given the cinematic concept of their latest Screen Violence they wanted to get a composer involved who worked in that universe. Singer and percussionist Lauren Mayberry said that the master of horror John Carpenter was the top of their wish list elaborating that "His films and music have been so impactful on us over the years, and without the stories he created I am not sure that the concept of Screen Violence (and female narratives within the album) would exist in the way they do." They decided to reach for the stars and contact Carpenter's team and to their delight Carpenter was excited by the idea. Lauren continues "As horror fans, we know that John Carpenter is the godfather and the gold standard and we're so excited to get to work with him in any capacity... we never really thought he'd reply, let alone that he'd send back something better than the original." Carpenter's remix of the Chvrches song "Good Girls," created alongside his creative partners Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, enhances the depths of the song's already infectious synthesizer melodies and adds his signature slightly sinister swagger and groove.

Waxwork Records is excited to present the deluxe double LP film score release of The Eyes Of My Mother. Written and directed by Nicolas Pesce, The Eyes Of My Mother is a 2016 black and white horror film that focuses on a young woman, Francisca (Kika Magalhães) that grows up on the family farm where she has previously witnessed the murder of her mother during her adolescence. After keeping her mother’s murderer captive for years, and plagued by loneliness after the death of her father, Francisca begins a bizarre chain of actions that include luring victim’s back to the family farmhouse, dismemberment, kidnapping an infant to raise as her own son, and personally exhuming her mother.

Composed by Ariel Loh, the score to The Eyes Of My Mother is dark, haunting, and atmospheric. Composed entirely on vintage, modded analog synthesizers, the score effectively presents a tune drifting, ghostly, and often beautiful collection of compositions that captures the lead characters psychosis and devolvement.

The score to The Eyes Of My Mother has been pressed to two 180 gram colored vinyl records and housed in a deluxe, heavyweight old-style gatefold jacket with satin coating. Features include composer liner notes by Ariel Loh, new artwork by illustrator Nikita Kaun, and an 11”x11” art print.

Waxwork Records proudly presents the debut film score release of Queen Of Earth. Written and directed by Alex Ross Perry and starring Elisabeth Moss and Katherine Waterston, Queen Of Earth is a 2015 American psychological thriller that tells the story of two women who grew up together that spend a week at a lake house retreat, as they did the previous year. This time, however, one of the women’s mood, and possibly her sanity, has been affected by the recent death of her father and the ending of a relationship.

Scored by composer Keegan DeWitt, the beautiful-nightmarish music of Queen Of Earth captures an auditory mental breakdown. By dissonant usage of a 1928 Steinway piano, French horns, echoing clarinets, and a Wrenchenspiel (an instrument made of tuned metal wrenches that are hit with mallets to produce a destabilized xylophone effect), DeWitt successfully creates a terrifying, slowly unraveling score that sonically seizes the descent into madness.

The deluxe film score release features the complete Queen Of Earth score mastered for vinyl, 180 gram colored vinyl, exclusive liner notes by Alex Ross Perry, Elisabeth Moss, and Keegan Dewitt, artwork by Anna Bak-Kvapil, a booklet, and heavyweight packaging including an old-style gatefold jacket.

Six years before the release of his landmark Mother Earth's Plantasia LP, composer and arranger Mort Garson met experimental film director Skip Sherwood, who was interested in an electronic score for his new movie, Didn't You Hear? While not much is known now about the exact nature of their collaboration, we have Garson's magnificent score as a record of those heady, early days after his life-changing discovery of the Moog synthesizer. Notable for being one of the earliest screen appearances by a young Gary Busey, Didn't You Hear? also boasts one of the first-ever all-electronic movie scores. Though the score was first released in 1970, it sounds as adventurous and futuristic today as it must have then. Originally available only in the lobby of the theater at screenings of the movie in Seattle, the soundtrack LP went out of print shortly after the film's release. It has been a sought-after record for collectors of Mort Garson and early electronic music ever since. Sacred Bones is honored to reissue Didn't You Hear? as it was meant to be heard, taken from the original master tapes and given a pristine remaster by engineer Josh Bonati. Morton S. "Mort" Garson was a Canadian-born composer, arranger, songwriter, and pioneer of electronic music. He is best known for his albums in the 1960s and 1970s that were among the first to feature Moog synthesizers. His best-known album is Mother Earth's Plantasia, a 1976 Moog album designed to be played "for plants and the people who love them." Sacred Bones Records has undertaken the project of giving official, licensed reissues to key releases from Mort Garson's catalog, with the intention of bringing these bold masterpieces to a 21st century audience.

Stanley Kubrick has a troubled past with Deerhoof. An argument over whether Eyes Wide Shut was good almost broke up the band in 1999 and again in 2003. When Famous Class suggested a 7" of music from The Shining, the band waffled for three years about whether they thought they could do it justice. But once a Halloween release date was proposed, Deerhoof couldn't resist. They got the score to Bartok's "Music For Strings, Percussion and Celesta" out of the library, and transcribed one of the 20s songs straight from the closing credits. First released in 2000, the original Flcl is a coming-of-age anime set in the fictional Japanese city of Mabase revolving around an alien detective, Haruko, who seeks the space pirate king, and Naota, a sullen young man facing the tribulations of adolescence. The original series of Flcl was eventually followed by Flcl Progressive and Flcl Alternative, which continued to follow Haruko as she careens through the lives of young people in her ongoing hunt. Two more series of Flcl – Flcl Grunge and Flcl Shoegaze – were recently announced for release in 2023.

Produced by the studios Production I.G. and Gainax, the Flcl series have become beloved outside of Japan for its unique animation style, robust action sequences, and unforgettable soundtrack. The music to Flcl was composed and performed by the Japanese alternative rock band the pillows. Flcl Season 1 Vol. 2 (Original Soundtrack and Drama Album) contains music by the pillows from the first season of the show, as well as a series of Japanese audio drama tracks. As Poh Lin and her family explore the island's beautiful yet threatening landscape, the local islanders carry out their "hungry ghost" rituals for the spirits of those who died on the island without a burial. They make offerings to appease the lost souls who are said to be wandering the jungles at night looking for home. This album presents the original score Aaron Cupples created for the film. Rich in texture and harmonics, the music is characterized by the bespoke instruments and recording techniques employed in its creation. The soundtrack also features sound recordist Leo Dolgan's vivid field recordings. All captured on Christmas Island, the four pieces recall insect choruses, strange and ominous bird calls, erupting blowholes, fire, ocean, and Buddhist prayers for the dead. Futuristic synthesizer specialist and sound designer Matsuo Ohno was responsible for the sound design of a broad range of film, television and radio soundtracks, most famously the animation series Astro Boy, which he began working on in 1963, together with his assistant, Takehisa Kosugi. Ohno was born in the heavily-populated Kanda district of central Tokyo in 1930 and was heavily affected by the repeated bombing raids on the city enacted in World War II, which took place during his formative years. After the War, deeply motivated by philosophy and Surrealism, he was largely unaffected by popular music, other than the
electronic abstractions of Karlheinz Stockhausen; the left-wing filmmaker Fumio Kamei was another early influence. Ohno began immersing himself in the realm of sound effects while working with the Bungaku-za modernist theatre troupe and he performed a similar function at NHK, Japan’s national broadcasting corporation, but became so frustrated by the rigidity of the restrictions imposed on him there that he quit his prestigious post at the broadcaster, although his skills were such that he remained in high demand as a freelancer, which allowed
him to refine his sound effects techniques with evolving analogue synthesizers. The five suites of tracks that make up the album Roots Of Electronic Sound album were recorded between 1963 and 1966; initially released on the ALM label in 1975, it is comprised of brief
tape experiments, the cover artwork fittingly representing Astro Boy, from which many of the audio interludes are taken.

Death Waltz Recording Company brings us what is likely to be a future classic in the form of Ben Lovett’s sophisticated electronic score to science fiction thriller "Synchronicity". Starring mumblecore specialist AJ Bowen (YOU’RE NEXT) and cult hero Michael Ironside (SCANNERS), "Synchronicity" is about an inventor that creates a time machine and uses it to go back in time to stop the potential theft of the technology. Lovett’s music recalls all the obvious candidates for these types of scores, John Carpenter, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, but while he stands on the shoulders of giants he still manages to create something that exists on its own terms.

"Synchronicity" is all about immersion; the score wraps you up in it and massages your senses before taking you on a beautiful but dangerous journey. It feels like a dream, with Lovett’s evocative soundscapes modulating and pulsating to augment the pervasive synth melodies. Much of it is ominous, foreboding – it flows between serenity and paranoia, but it always coheres into the kind of experience that is almost impossible to replicate. The future, the past, the present: they’re all here, and "Synchronicity" feels both futuristic and timeless. It is what it is, a beautiful contradiction.

Responsible for the soundtrack and for more than 200 other films, mainly in the erotic genre, is Gerhard Heinz Shameless / Schamlos (1969), The Naked Countess / Die Nackte Gräfin (1971), Julia: Innocence Once Removed / Die Nichte der O. (1974) or Love Bavarian Style / Geh Zieh Dein Dirndl Aus (1975). Titles like Svenska Disco Machine provide flawless disco-funk, Bangkok At Night appeals to arose directly out of a James Bond movie from the 1970s, Die Sieben Sünden is a Vienna Melange consisting of Chanson and Easy Listening and Dampfnudeln (sweet yeast dumpling) have never been prepared that voluptuous as in this alpine homage of Je t’aime.

The enormous variety from marvellously arranged and sung Beat, Bossa Nova, Pop and Groove Jazz stands out from the mostly bad films and makes this compilation a highlight of our past repertoire.
