Meaning can come from surprising places. In 2020 the Irish guitarist Cian Nugentmoved back into his family home in Dublin to care for his mother, Kathy, who wasthen recovering from a stroke and experiencing aphasia (difficulty with speech). Shebegan saying: "she brings me back to the land of the living" seemingly out of nowhereand with little knowledge of its origin or meaning. "It stuck with me," says Cian, who atthe time was working on songs for what would become his 4th album, and felt it wouldmake an apt title for that record. "The songs here act as a way of processing change andaccepting new futures." Kathy also provides the cover art, a painting she made while stillin the hospital.Seven years since Nugent's previous album, She Brings Me Back To The Land Of The Livingmerges the previously explored styles across Night Fiction (2016), the expansive Born WithThe Caul (2014) and his enigmatic debut Doubles (2011). After releasing three acclaimed acoustic guitar records from 2011-2018, Salsburg pivoted with the first volume of Landwerk in 2020. Alone on a tree farm in rural Kentucky one winter night, he put on an old 78 by the Jewish cantor Yossele Rosenblatt and was struck by an organ chord. He sampled it, looped it and began playing guitar alongside it. It was like "conversing with a ghost" he told Uncut Magazine in 2021. Landwerk No. 3 contains six new compositions across two LPs.

The new studio album by Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth was recorded in the summer of 2021 in Richmond, Virginia with a core group of Doug McCombs (Tortoise, bass), Ryan Jewell (Ryley Walker, drums) and Tom Malach (Garcia Peoples, guitar). Bill Nace (Body/Head), Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate), Linda Pitmon (Baseball Project), Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra), Nick Millevoi and Dave Harrington (darkside) also contribute. Harrington serves as co-producer alongside Forsyth. Evolution marks Forsyth's first studio record since All Time Present (2019) which earned 5 stars from The Guardian and was one of MOJO Magazine's albums of the year. It's a tighter effort - with its seven tracks running just over 50 minutes. Forsyth says: "I think it represents a major shift in my work, and at the same time, it's probably the most deeply rooted project I've done, blessed by the presence of friends and collaborators - each of whom has been an inspiration for me." Forsyth says the album "is about change and our ultimate helplessness - as individuals, as artists, as societies - in the face of it." In working with Dave Harrington he says, "I was hoping to make rock music whose surface reads something like electronic music. I don't pretend to know what the future holds, but, for better or worse, change is the only sure thing."

Dodging Dues is a startlingly expansive record_"startling" in part because it's relatively short (seven songs, all but one hovering around the four minute mark), but also because it traverses so many moods and styles: languid and dreamy one moment, surging and intense the next. Garcia Peoples (these days a six-person band) "hit their stride" a long time ago, but here they seem to be hitting a different one, working themselves loose of influnces (though this tree has roots: traces of Thin Lizzy, of more arcane bits of U.K. folk-prog, of vintage Meat Puppets in some of the softer passages) while at the same time opening themselves up to their own individual strangeness, becoming ever more singular and ever more free.

Michael Hurley's first new studio record in 12 years features eleven songs recorded in Astoria, Oregon during the brief time of year when the foxgloves bloom. Hurley had been workshopping the set at home for the past few years. Friends and collaborators came into town and contributed from afar. The songs are lifted by violin, organ, upright bass, banjo, percussion - but at the center, of course, is the enigmatic Snock, whose songs have grown only more unique and more 57 years after his debut album (First Songs - Folkways, 1964).
