Now-Again Records is completing the trilogy started with Forge Your Own Chains and followed by Tickets for Doomsday with Pale Shades Of Grey - another batch of rare, largely uncompiled - and sometimes barely heard - heavy psych-rock. Pounding drums, scathing fuzz guitar and morose, contemplative lyrics will bring you up on a downer. Pale Shades Of Grey, as the title hints, is perhaps the most contemplative of the series, heavy on ruminations of dark themes of love, death, pain and triumph, as performed by high school and college bands, Brasilian intellectuals, Nigerian rockers and even an Irish pub band from Michigan. A unique and compelling listen, and surely a worthy companion for these times.

Before releasing their lone self-titled debut album, one of the most rare rock records to be released in Europe in the 1970s, Paternoster provided the soundtrack for a film that could only have been made while the psychedelic movement was still in its first wave. The group’s first recordings presented here are the soundtrack for Herbert Holbaís 1971 hippie sci-fi film Die Ersten Tage (The First Days), screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, and interestingly played on Austrian TV in August of that year. The material issued here is the genesis of Paternoster and set the stage for the release of one of the world’s great rock albums with their self-titled debut the following year. The music has been painstakingly transferred directly from master tapes.

Issued in 1975, this is the articulation of Zambia’s Zamrock ethos. Its' musicians were anti-colonial freedom fighters, it envelops Zambian folk music traditions, and it rocks - hard. Amanaz were serious, and they made a serious stab at an album. They titled their album Africa, according to original band member Keith Kabwe, “because of how it was shared and how its inhabitants were butchered and enslaved, its resources stolen... all the atrocities slave drivers committed. “ Thus, their “Kale,” a blues sung in Nyanja, that traced the continent’s arc from slavery to Zambia’s independence closes the album. Kabwe and rhythm guitarist John Kanyepa have a winsome softness to their vocals, which sit politely aside the feral growl of drummer Watson Baldwin Lungu, bassist Jerry Mausala and bandleader/lead guitarist Isaac Mpofu. Africa’s vibe ranges from anxious (“Amanaz”) to escapist (“Easy Street”) to straight-up pissed-off. On the “History of Man,” his voice whiskey-burned, his distorted guitar buzzing like swarming hornets, Mpofu indicts his species. There’s a darkness to Africa not found on any other Zamrock records, and a melancholy drifts throughout, specifically on Mpofu’s more restrained “Khala My Friend,” which stands as an effective, bleak situation for the Zambian everyman, the average citizen of a struggling, new nation, who might have had relatives in conflict-torn countries on the horizon, who might have been struggling to find his next meal, who might have seen a bleaker future than his president promised. Then there’s the clear Velvet Underground-influence on the nostalgic “Sunday Morning,” which, as Kabwe recalls, was the first song written for the album, back in 1968, when Velvet Undergound and Nico was a new release - and the underground funk of “Making The Scene.” The album also tackles traditional Zambian music and early-‘60s rock – punctuated, of course by Kanyepa’s wah-wah and Mpofu’s fuzz guitars. But every time Amanaz get too deep, too violent, they come back with an accessible song and woo their listener back to the groove. “Green Apple” is a civil song, featuring Kanyepa’s sighing guitar.

Pounding drums, scathing fuzz guitar and morose, contemplative lyrics will bring you up on a downer. Tickets For Doomsday, as the title hints, is and rumination on what might befall the human race – made especially salient by the past year’s trials and tribulations – as performed by prison funk ensembles, Indonesian hippies, Krautrock legends, Icelandic prog-rock bands and even Bay Area rap catalyst E-40’s uncle, the man to rst distribute Master P’s No Limit Records, and the creator of this album’s title track, St. Charles “Chucky” Thurman. “Electrified by a diet of James Brown, the Stones and Deep Purple, WITCH were the stadium-filling kings of 70s Zamrock.” - MOJO
This landmark recording from Now-Again’s comprehensive overview of Zambia’s premier garage-, psych-, prog-, funk-,afro-rock ensemble WITCH, We Intend To Cause Havoc! is now available in a never before seen color variant. The audio is nigh-perfect – restored and remastered from the original master tapes. WITCH’s musical arc is contained to a five year span and, in retrospect, is a logical one. The band’s first two, self-produced albums - released in unison with the birth of the commercial Zambian recording industry – are exuberant experiments in garage rock, and are as influenced by the Rolling Stones as they are James Brown. In The Past, their second album, is the perfect follow-up for anyone exposed to the WITCH band through their landmark Introduction.

"Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk: 1970-1978
The untold story of indonesia’s various underground 70s musical scenes; extensive liner notes,
photographs and ephemera; fully restored and remastered audio; officially licensed.
The progressive music scenes in 1970s Indonesia were largely underground as a result of strict censorship imposed by the dictator Suharto.
Those who performed music marked by relentless fuzz, over the top, politically charged lyrics, strong rhythms and a cranky low-fidelity were truly
rebellious. And the resulting output has been largely – outside of the confines of this island nation – unheard or ignored. Indonesia, based in large
part on the restrictions imposed by Suharto, is better known for the coffee it exports than the music it creates. This situation hasn’t been remedied
by the rough-hewn Indonesian bootlegs that dotted the psychedelic landscape over the past five years.
Thanks now to the tireless – and expensive – research of Canadian hip hop producer and Southeast Asian music specialist Jason “Moss” Connoy
- and the trust that Indonesian rock legend Benny Soebardja placed in Now-Again Records as he traversed his homeland’s islands securing the
rights necessary for us to offer you this anthology - we feel like we can, in good spirits and conscience, shine the light on some of the most
impressive organizations to offer their take on the psychedelic and progressive rock and funk sounds during the early shocking, shaking days of
Suharto’s regime."

Paternoster, that UFO of a rock album released unceremoniously on a custom-pressed CBS Austria
long player in 1972, is the stuff of legend. It’s been known to the rock collecting elite since the 1980s,
when it was first rediscovered, and it quickly became one of those rock records, the records you hear
about only if you know someone who knows someone with a copy, much like Damon’s
Song of a Gypsy.
Paternoster is a terrifying album, a collection of songs that traverses the sublime, and thus
necessitates a bowel-loosening acceptance of beauty too complicated to merely admire, bowing
under the weight of a tremendous atmosphere, accentuated by Gothic organs and scorching fuzz
guitar, punctuated by wailing vocals detailing visceral, Bosch-like images, and carried by enveloping
bass and syncopated, mixed-well-too-loud-and-thankfully-so drums.
Includes download card for WAV files of the entire album and a digital version of the booklet with the
story of this mysterious album, told for the first time, in English and German.

Archival reissue of the Afro-prog-psych Zamrock masterpiece Presented For The First Time Ever In An Aged Copper Green Pressing The entirety of WITCH’s fourth album, restored and remastered from master tapes, and presented as an archival reissue in an aged copper green vinyl pressing. WITCH’s musical arc is contained to a five year span and, in retrospect, it is a logical one. The band’s fourth album - recorded after the band toured with Osibisa - makes use of traditional Zambian rhythms and folk melodies alongside progressive rock movements. It is the most "afro-rock" of WITCH’s oeuvre.

Morgen’s self-titled 1969 album is the sole release by the NYC band led by songwriter / vocalist Steve Morgen. Now-Again’s Reserve edition of the release pairs the album with previously-unreleased songs and alternate takes to create denitive double LP reissue of the album. That casual listeners have never heard of this late 60s masterpiece is by any measure a musical injustice. Morgen offers a portal to a dream space where the expansive, artful touches never prevent the band members from pummeling their instruments like their lives depended on it. Paul Major, perhaps the first Morgen evangelist, likens the album’s immediacy to that of Hendrix, stating “Morgen was one of the records that came closest to giving me that same kind of thrill on that level. It blew my mind!” Geoffrey Weiss, Now-Again’s nomination for World’s Greatest Record Collector, states “…unlike 95% of the rare psychedelic records that people celebrate it sounds like they were good musicians who were well rehearsed and had worked out this sound very intentionally. Morgen has a kind of power – you really can’t compare it to anything.” The band, and Morgen’s arc were – cribbing Kurt Vonnegut – unstuck in time. It took 50 years for Steve Morgen’s belief, for instance, that an alternate, superior version of his stellar “Purple” was recorded in 1968. It sees release here, alongside other takes of songs from the album, including a version of “Beggin’ Your Pardon (Ms. Joan)” on which Morgen’s fiery guitarist Murray Shiffrin sings lead and songs the band recorded as possibilities for the album, before settling on their dense, hazy vision and etching an indelible entry into the psychedelic canon. The set is rounded out with the inclusion of extensive liner notes by Jeff “Chairman” Mao as well as never-before seen photos and ephemera in an oversized book. Download card for WAV files for all vinyl tracks and additional bonus tracks.

The re-discovered third album by India’s best known psychedelic-rock ensemble, presented in its entirety. The companion piece our Atomic Forest anthology Obsession (NA 5087) Covers of Deodato, Stevie Wonder and “Spectrum,” the heaviest Indian psych-funk jam unearthed to date.
Over the course of four years, culminating in 2011, we at Now-Again Records assembled the Atomic Forest anthology
Obsession, which delved into and told the story of India’s 70s rock underground and this psychedelic ensemble’s story.
At the time we issued Obsession, we were not aware of the third album that the Atomic Forest had recorded, issued under Kanga’s name as Disco Roar. When it came to our attention, we figured that we owed it to anyone entranced by this hard-to-believe, underground, Indian rock scene to issue this, the first album that the Atomic Forest recorded.
“That Disco Roar album was the first time we were doing anything like that. It was the first thing we did. It progressed into the Hit Film Themes album. Then these guys came with more commercial potential songs (which became Obsession ’77). But originally it was just a band, the live performances that we did, that made us very popular, these simple songs,” guitarist Abraham Mammen recalls. Atomic Forest’s story stands in for the untold stories of many of India’s underground bands, bands remembered vividly by those who witnessed their performances, bands that often homemade, cassette recordings – that have been lost to time. Mammen, now a traveling preacher splitting his time between India and the United States, reflects on the unlikely reissue of the Atomic Forest’s recordings: “What’s left of the Atomic Forest? It’s just like smoke: smoke on the water.’ With the release of Disco Roar, that smoke keeps rising.

Al Manfredi is the father of hip-hop producer Exile, and Blue
Gold is his little-known West Coast rock masterpiece from
1973. Manfredi’s dreams of securing a record deal with this
album faded, but he spent the rest of his life recording
music. This version of the album was overseen by Exile.
Born into a musical family Al Manfredi started writing songs when he was child. As a teenager in 1965, he formed the Nuts
& Bolts in the small beach town of San Clemente, California. Inspired by the Kinks, the Beatles and the Byrds, the group
separated themselves from the pack by also performing original material written by Manfredi and band mate Mike Ingram.
In late 1966 they changed their name to the Lost & Found and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where they cut a rare single,
“Don’t Move Girl” b/w “To Catch the Sun,” which now commands high coin from ‘60s garage collectors.
When they returned to San Clemente in early 1967 their music had taken a more psychedelic direction. The Lost & Found
were riding high that year, until tragedy struck. Ingram was found hanged under suspicious circumstances and soon after
Lost & Found drummer Mike Ryer died of cancer at the age of 19. Heartbroken, Manfredi gave up on the band scene
completely and moved to Garden Grove to teach at his family’s music store.
But alone, behind closed doors, he kept writing songs and working on his music, recording hours of tapes, often tracking
all the instruments himself. In 1973 he chose six of his best songs, some of them written back in the Lost & Found days,
and had them custom-pressed as an LP. Only a handful of copies were pressed, and most of these were sent out to various
record companies in the hope of landing a deal. Despite the outstanding quality of the music, there were no takers. But
decades later, collectors discovered the Al Manfredi album and hailed it a West Coast rock masterpiece. In his Acid Archives
book, Patrick Lundborg called its discovery a deus ex machina and compared it to David Crosby’s first solo album and
Hawaii-era Merrell Fankhauser, “not just the acutely captured mellowness, but the self-confidence and the talent.”
This little-known West Coast rock masterpiece was rediscovered and celebrated by Acid Archives founder Patrick Lundborg
and others around the time that Manfredi died in 1995. This version of the album, overseen by Manfredi’s son Exile,
and with Manfredi’s story told by Ugly Things’ founder Mike Stax, presents the complete package of an incredible lost and
found artist.

The latest release in Now-Again’s Reserve Series is Hunger – Strictly From Hunger: the band’s preferred version of the album, unedited, fuzz-guitar heavy late 60s psych-rock, restored and remastered from a rare test press. Hunger arrived in L.A. from Portland in late 1967 as the Outcasts, a teenage cover band, but within a six months they had signed with a connected manager, played all over Los Angeles, embraced psychedelia and signed on to record an album of original music for the label their manager founded for them: Public! Records. They showed tremendous promise – and their producers invested heavily into a band that was going to be the next marquee act at the Whiskey A Go-Go, bringing in members of Strawberry Alarm Clock, including future Lynyrd Skynyrd star Ed King, to produce an album. But Hunger broke up before their album’s release and their entry in rock’s canon was shadowed for years. This is the definitive Reserve Edition reissue of a late ‘60s psych–rock classic, overseen by Hunger’s band members John Morton, Steve Hansen and Mike Lane: the band’s preferred, unedited, fuzz-guitar heavy version of the album, restored and remastered from a rare test press. This is the first time that band’s vision for the album has been issued in full on vinyl. Contains an extensive booklet by Jim Cherry, Eothen Alapatt and Clark Faville that corrects many factual inaccuracies told over the record’s celebrated past three decades as one of rock’s holy grails. The booklet is filled with never-published photos from lead guitarist John Morton’s archive. Here’s an example of what’s in store – the full version of “Open Your Eyes” featuring Ed King’s lead guitar lines – all but absent on the Public! The 6th entry in the Now-Again Reserve Edition series is the definitive reissue of a lauded and misunderstood Krautrock album as well as the first band-sanctioned reissue in the series.

The most mysterious Krautrock album, German Oak’s “Down in the Bunker” has been fetishized and demonized, lauded and misunderstood for nearly four decades. In this definitive Reserve Edition of the album, the German Oak trio – together again after 30 years apart – have approved the remastering of their 70s music, finally tell the story behind the creation of their dark, brooding album – and the occult-obsessed record collector behind the original album’s release and its myth – and they share previously unreleased music and photos.

The obscure Düsseldorf band’s self-produced debut were mainly spontaneous sessions recorded in a bunker. According to an online statement by the alleged bandleader the music was later published by a friend of the band who centered the titles and the artwork on World War II themes, in which the band itself had little say.

This two LP set presents the album as it was initially released, and a second disc of other songs by the band, both rare and previously unreleased.

14 tracks by Jimi Macon, Black Maffia, Blacklites and more, many reissued for the first time. Includes a 16-page booklet with extensive notes on an overlooked and important portion of Rock n’ Roll’s history & a download card to WAV files of the full album.

Nearly everyone in the world can rattle off the great African-American musical forms. Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, House or Gospel. One influential genre is always left off of the
list: a folk music known as rock n’ roll. Rock n’ Roll was a term originally coined to market the white-friendly version of a genre that already existed; prior to 1965, the line between
rock n’ roll and R&B was thin: Ike Turner recorded and released “Rocket ‘88’ ” in 1951 and, while its Chess Records release reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart, it is
regarded by many as the first Rock n’ Roll record.

The Great Divide between R&B and Rock n’ Roll came after the Beatles and the British Invasion decimated the Top 40 chart in 1964.

So somewhere in the mid to late-1960s, Rock n’ Roll became perceived as something for
the Caucasian kids. When Jimi Hendrix and Arthur Lee made the scene, they were said to be black musicians entering into a white world.

This anthology presents earnest questions as to why we know so little about these bands and the movement of which they were a part.

NOW Available IN A Limited Edition RED Vinyl Pressing Ayalew Mesfin stands aside the likes of Mulatu Astake, Mahmoud Ahmed, Hailu Mergia and Alemayehu Eshete as a legend of 1970s Ethiopia. Mesfin’s music is some of the funkiest to arise from this unconquerable East African nation. Mesfin’s recording career, captured in nearly two dozen 7” singles and numerous reel-to-reel tapes, shows the strata of the most fertile decade in Ethiopia’s 20th century recording industry, when records were pressed constantly by both independent upstarts and corporate behemoths, even if they were only distributed within the confines of this East African nation. Though Mesfin was forced underground by the Derg regime that took control of Ethiopia in 1974, he has returned almost 50 years later with this triumphant set albums – the first time that his music has been presented in this form. These albums give us a chance to discover a rare and beautiful moment in music history, in anthologies built from Mesfin’s uber-rare 7” single releases and from previously unreleased recordings taken from master tapes. Mot Aykerim gives us a chance to discover a rare & beautiful moment in music history, in an anthology built from his uber-rare 7” single releases. Contains an oversized 11” x 11” 16 page book that tells the story of modern Ethiopian music and Mesfin’s role within it.

The definitive reissue of one of rock’s rarest and most sought-after albums – “acid-folk” – equal parts pastoral folk and contemplative psychedelic. The rst time since 1971 that this album has been pressed from the original master tapes, recently discovered in Italy. Lacquered directly from tape in an all-analog transfer by Bernie Grundman. This is the single LP version that we issued after the Now-Again Reserve Edition sold out. Mark Fry was 19 – recently graduated from high school and in Italy studying painting – when he walked barefooted into RCA’s Italian subsidiary, played some songs he’d written on his guitar and was signed to record the album that would become legend. The first recordings he made proved stuff, so he was paired with members of the Scottish band Middle of the Road, who were in Rome while under contract to RCA Italiana. Convening in a basement home studio with two 4-track reel-to-reel recorders, Mark’s visions coalesced in a dreamy, airy manner – “Nick Drake meets Dr. Strangely Strange with a touch of Lewis Carroll” The Word Magazine would later write. Pressed in small amounts for Vincenzo Micocci’s RCA sub-label It, Alice remained an out of reach masterpiece for many but its creator, who returned to England in 1971 and subsequently traveled the world, playing music, sometimes recording and painting. By the time of its rediscovery, its master tapes were assumed lost. Their rediscovery allows this pristine transfer to reveal nuances not heard on anything but original It pressings.
