The sole album released in 1974 from this almighty group of nine musicians lead by Chicago native Danny Leake continues to turn up in the hands of the most determined collectors for good reason. Formed in the most unlikely of circumstances as a group of American military workers stationed in Germany, the band made one dazzling leap onto the frontline of soul before promptly disbanding and never looking back. As with all records that get marked with the coveted 'rare' status, what we don't know about the record outweighs what we do, but as the needle fits the groove on album opener "You Keep Coming Back," and the vocal and instrumental harmonies build into a frenzy, the addictive joy of the record takes hold for repeated listens. P-vine is delighted to be bringing this album back from the vaults for a limited pressing fitted with a unique Japanese obi strip.

After the opener rich with soul, "No More City, No More Country" changes pace with a psychedelic funk jam that blossoms into a piece of spiritual jazz and social commentary of 70s America. "Windy C" is an album highlight and kicks off the B-side with a lost funk classic where the individual talents of Steve Maxwell's organ playing, Leake's guitar and John Jackson's percussion all combine to make the deftest of touches count. The wealth of compositional talent behind the album contributes to its varied sound, and the might behind Marvin Daniels' vocals and trumpet playing joins Leake on the songwriting credits with producer Rick Hartung. Leake would later make his name as the trusted sound engineer of Stevie Wonder, but his roots as the mythical bandleader of 100% Pure Poison lives on in the books of rare record folklore.

To single out a release in catalogue of the 70s famed ‘tax scam’ label TSG is a hard ask - the level of quality remained both consistently and inexplicably high during its two years of operation. Thus calling 1619 Bad Ass Band’s 1976 self-titled album a stand-out release doesn’t honour the spirit of the catalogue, and yet, by all accounts, everything about this monolithic funk and soul unit is striking.

Lead by bandleader Khalid Abdul Shalid, album opener “Love to Love” beats down the door with a pulsating funk jam, snarling boy-girl vocal comradery and segues into the mellower reverb-soaked soul track “I Am Mine”. Phyllis Harris, sister of band bassist Carl Harris, takes over as the lead vocalist soon after, and shines on baroque pop-infused album highlight “Just for You”. She later delivers a knock-out vocal performance on the moving soul ballad “Rain (Always Finds Me Crying)”. The band depart on “Nobody” in the same way as they arrive with more stellar funk grooves and call-and-response unity.

Prices on the second-hand market for the original LP and 1978 Graham International reissue have priced out virtually everyone interested in the release for decades. For its first widely available release, P-vine is thrilled to be reissuing the album on LP fitted with an iconic Japanese obi strip.

Action Packed Gangsters, also known as A.P.G. Crew was a hip-hop group from Oakland, California, made up of Marlon “M.C. Mello Mar” Blackwell, Jimmy “J-Cutt” Robinson, Cold Comin' Up (Professor T & DJ Pause), MC Red & DJ Red Slice (The Red Connection). Their second album Oaktown's Finest, known as a 90s Hip-Hop / Random Rap masterpiece, was released in 1991 on YO Records and the songs "Takin' It To The Streets" and "Daily Routine" on the album were considered classics of 90s random rap, sampling sources are "Party Time" and "Panama" from Roy Porter's classic album "Inner Feelings", respectively. Both tunes are highly regarded not only by rare groove freaks, but also by hip-hop fans. American R&B and soul singer and producer Al Johnson debuted as lead singer of The Unifics in the mid 60's and enjoyed a successful career as songwriter and producer after leaving the group. He is also well known as a producer of Terry Huff's classic album The Lonely One.

His first album Peaceful was released from a minor label called Marina Records in 1978 and was produced by Lloyd Price who is the singer that had some R&B hit songs in the 50's. In addition, thanks to the skillful supporting musicians such as Bernard Purdie on drums, Leo Nocentelli from The Meters on guitar, the album is an aural delight with soulful gems from start-to-finish.

Although it's less known than his 2nd full length Back For More which was produced by Norman Connors, P-vine believes this album will strike a chord with R&B lovers. Includes Japanese OBI-strip!

Produced by Hawaiian AOR legend Kirk Thompson (of Kalapana and Lemuria fame) singer-songwriter Babadu’s sole album is mellow Hawaiian soul from start to finish.

The 1970s saw the birth of Contemporary Hawaiian music, a genre inspired by the popular sounds of the mainland US, but with a distinct, Hawaiian feeling. Perhaps the most popular form of Contemporary Hawaiian music was Hawaiian AOR. It makes sense - mellow grooves and laid-back bass lines seem perfect for the pristine beaches of Waikiki; yet the genre would take off, gaining popularity in lands as far away as Japan.

Babadu! is firmly in the tradition of Hawaiian AOR, with the vocals of Babadu himself resting perfectly atop backing tracks that perfectly meld the sounds of the island with mainland yacht rock. Album opener “We’re Not To Blame” is a perfect example, with tropical flutes practically dancing over Babadu’s soulful vocals and a groove that’ll have anybody nodding their head. With Kirk Thompson of Kalapana handling production, arranging and keyboards - much like he did for Hawaiian AOR legends Lemuria, the album sounds simply sublime. A much-loved favourite among Rare Groove fans, this album was originally released in 1977 on Seventy Seven Records where it spent the better part of 30 years amassing untouchable prices on the second-hand market. With its first reissue in 2010, many fans were finally able to hop on board the pleasure-bound trip, and with those records now becoming a rarity, a second repress was always on the cards. Album opener “The Brief Encounter (introduction)” ignites the members with rallying vocals, and pacey percussive funk grooves that keeps spirits high and punctuate the album up until its joyous closer “We’re Gonna Have A Good Time”. There are few saxophonists who were able to hold their own against the late great Eric Dolphy. Clifford Jordan is one of them. As a member of the Charles Mingus sextet on his legendary 1964 European tour with Eric Dolphy, Jordan is featured on iconic albums such as The Great Concert of Charles Mingus and Town Hall Concert. Born in 1931, the tenor saxophonist was a giant of the hard bop genre, with an adaptable style that could match the earthsy avant-blues of Mingus, or soar into space alongside Dolphy. In The World, Jordan’s first album for Strata-East and the first in the seminal Eric Dolphy series, sees the saxophonist lead two different ensembles, featuring talents such as Don Cherry (tp.), Kenny Dorham (tp.), Wynton Kelly (pf.), Richard Davis (b.), Al Heath (ds.), and more! Album opener “Vienna” is a Jordan composition, a 17 minute waltz that starts almost pensive, but gradually increases in intensity until the sextet reaches a roaring climax mid-way through the song. Jordan plays his horn as if he’s yearning for something, deftly weaving arpeggios with upper register acrobatics in one of the finest solos of his career. Cherry is in top shape as well, with his instantly recognizable playing adding a welcome dose of avant-garde. On the C-side, Ouagoudougou is another extended Jordan composition, with another fantastic solo from Jordan opening the solo section. Yet Dorham’s playing soon takes center stage, with the trumpeter showing a side to his playing that rarely appears on his best-known records. You can practically hear Dorham straining as his solo flies upwards, giving it an aggression vastly unlike much of the Blue Bossa trumpeter’s studio output. The recording features two different quartets, with only Billy Higgins (ds.) and Jordan (ts.) appearing on all tracks; Cedar Walton and Stanley Cowell take turns on piano, while Sam Jones and Bill Lee (father of Spike!) take turns on bass. Across 12 tracks and two sides, Clifford Jordan’s two quartets are consistent, with some of the tightest grooves and most spiritual playing of the 70’s being recorded during these two sessions. Album opener “Powerful Paul Robeson” is an homage to the legendary singer and activist, and is the kind of spiritual jazz that immediately sends chills down your spine. It opens with atmospheric piano rolls and percussion, over which Jordan’s free improvisations take on an almost devotional sound. Homages to great jazz men are frequent throughout, with half of the tracks being named after musicians, including the Lee penned “John Coltrane”. The song opens with a bass solo from Lee, before the quartet settles into a steady mid-tempo groove. Jordan plays the angular melody alone, and with every refrain, the melody takes on a haunting quality, until it descends into a subdued bass solo. The chant-like choral refrain that follows, laid gently over a repetitive bassline and delicate percussion is hypnotic, and as Jordan picks up the melody once more, you’ll feel as though this is somehow different. Glass Bead Games is undoubtedly one of the finest spiritual jazz recordings to come out of the 70s, and is one that you absolutely must not miss! Influenced by kind of post-hardcore and math rock brought to the world by 80-90s American labels such as Dischord Records and Ebullition Records, their delicate yet developed performances with a sense of urgency brought about by complex guitar phrases, and songs are written with an outstanding sense of melody and emotional words which is making the band can stand beyond categorize of music style. ”edbl & friends" is a project in which edbl collaborates with various musicians. Back in 2015, P-vine pressed a special edition of the Fire/Enjoy singles by Elmore James as a series of 7” discs that was quickly buried by the quick turnover of new releases and were not presented to our overseas clients. As part of a recent drive to clean up the stock-room, our dusters managed to work their magic and uncover a number of copies of this release previously unknown to the overseas marketing division. Towards the end of a career cut tragically short, Elmore James recorded a string of singles between 1959 and 1963 with renowned producer Bobby Robinson under his Fire and Enjoy record labels that would eventually lend their name to this collection. Together they would capture James’s iconic take on the blues with his effortless intersections of slide guitar complementing the marching calls from his pained Blues vocals. This feast for the eyes box-set includes nine 7” discs and a Fire Records tote bag sized perfectly for carrying your favourite 7” record and not much else. A great addition for collectors of rare blues and DJs.

"Freeway" was released in 1976 as the only work from pianist and composer Eric Dunbar who was based on New Orleans. Almost nobody had the original edition vinyl released by a legendary tax scam label "tsg Records" because this LP had pressed only a few quantities just for tax saving. Currently, this album is well known as one of the most rare and valuable titles among releases of the label. Not only its rarelity but the music itself is also truly almighty, all tracks are full of intense low-mid grooves and skillful brass sections support the base of sound strongly. The opening number "Freeway (m1)" is one of the highlights of this long play. P-vine is proud to present this long awaited reissue with newly digital remastering and Japanese OBI-strip.
