These recordings, taken from a studio session before their legendary performance, find Bob Marley and The Wailers at their best. In 1981, the legendary Japanese punk band The Stalin performed in an event called "Answer 81" at a venue called "Taku Taku" in Kyoto,and the previously unreleased live recording has been unexpectedly unearthed and now available from P-vine Records. This remarkable find emerged from a vast collection of tapes stored by Jojo Hiroshige (Hijokaidan / Alchemy Records). The live recording features the early members, Michiro Endo, Shintaro Sugiyama, Atsushi Kaneko, and Jun Inui, delivering an intense performance filled with raw energy and tension, transcending over 40 years in the shadows.

The names of tracks for this release was referenced from a handwritten tracklist of the master tape, and some unfamiliar song names included, titled "血の海Want You" ("Blood Sea Want You"), is the song known as "飢餓々々帰郷" (Kiga Kiga Kikyou), frequently played Endo's solo act but The Stalin version was never officially released before. Additionally, the thirteenth track, "お前まじかだ（ブタのケツ）" ("Are You Serious (Pig's Ass)"), is an arrangement of a song from The Stalin's precursor band, Jiheitai. While it was previously included in bootleg releases and this marks the first-ever official release of the track as well.

Undoubtedly this album is one of the important discs of Japanese new wave and German krautrock history. "Phew" is Japanese female vocalist who is well known as a member of legendary punk band "Aunt Sally". She has been active in a wide range of projects and collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Seiichi Yamamoto, DAF, and Neubauten etc. This was originally released in 1981 as her solo debut album, made in legendary Conny's Studio with Conny Plank, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit from CAN. Not only highly demanded by vinyl collectors worldwide, but also this album is outstanding in the dimension of the music. By Plank's engineering, their never fading sound-making is still innovative and no one can stand next. Now we present it as reissued LP with OBI, you can listen to the monumental work of her career in vinyl after more than 30 years since the last time it was reissued for the first time.

High Sunn is the project of Justin Cheromiah, a Bay Area-based songwriter who started making music at the age of 14 by recording at his home, and whose works vary from alterna to indie pop to shoegazer, all centered around a bedroom style that is his specialty. He has already released many albums on various labels such as Spirit Goth, Pmkslm, and Galaxy Train. High Sunn has teamed up with P-vine to release his brand new album "welcome to life". Justin is heavily influenced by Japanese culture, including anime and music, and this is evident throughout his work. The album's lead track "alternate touch" was written by Azusa Suga (April Blue / ex. For Tracy Hyde) in lyrics and features vocals by Yua Uchiyama, a member of Japanese idol group RAY.

"Ethio Jazz" is an album released by the Ethiopian master musician Mulatu Astatke in 1974 on his homeland Ethiopia's Amha Records. It stands as a milestone not only in his career but also in the history of contemporary Ethiopian music, continuing to shine brightly. With melancholic melodies played by wind instruments, a polyrhythmic rhythm section creating robust waves, sultry vibes from the vibraphone, and smoky organ tones, the album is enveloped in the sounds of jazz inherited from the States. This work, where various musical elements are miraculously fused in perfect balance, undoubtedly reigns at the pinnacle of Ethio Jazz, showcasing Mulatu's ambitious creativity in seeking out new sounds.

"Indonesian rock trio Voice Of Baceprot (vob) have had to weather many challenges after they decided to carve a career in music. With the lack of music-related facilities in their village of Singajaya in Garut, West Java, they had to practically build their own modest practice studio. And they could only get a gig in the nearest city of Garut, three-and-a-half hours away. They had to face more significant adversities, namely the stigmas and unsolicited suggestions regarding religion and decency directed at them.

"You must remember that we come from a village where many see women as inferior to men. After completing high school, we did not have a lot of options. It was either work at home or for a relative at a convenience store. Or marry someone our parents choose," vocalist/guitarist Marsya recalls. It is a mindset that has survived from one generation to the other, even to this day. Hence, garnering support from even their family members became an uphill battle. ""No wonder only the three of us managed to come this far when you consider that VOB started with 15 members in 2014!"" drummer Sitti exclaims.

With all the setbacks that have come from all directions for an extended period, it is no surprise that they have played a massive part in developing VOB's character as a band and as individuals. Rather than dampening their spirits, however, they have moulded the trio to become stronger. "We have become rocks now. Hardened, rigid, and stiff due to all the doctrines in our minds. But through music and our friendship, we became fully aware that they must be cut through and broken regardless," Marsya explains. And from the trials and tribulations that they have had to suffer, VOB chose to name their debut album “Retas”. In Bahasa Indonesia, ""retas"" is ""a body of igneous rocks that breaks through by cutting through other rocks"". It epitomises how the band see themselves: igneous rocks, the end product of the socio-economic challenges that have shaped them into who they are now. ""Retas"" is a collection of songs that embody their solid determination to break free and carve out their path as a band, as musicians, and as independent women. With Ntrl guitarist Coki Bollemeyer at the helm as producer for the newer songs on the album, “Retas” comprises nine tracks, including album focus track “Age Oriented”, fan-favourite “What’s the Holy (Nobel) Today?”, “The Enemy of Earth is You”, instrumental track “Kawani”, and four previous singles that they have released since 2018, including their breakthrough single “School Revolution” and the smash hit “God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music”. ""We really enjoyed making this album, thanks in no small part to Coki. His support and appreciation towards the hard work we put into the process have made a huge difference. It gave us the energy and confidence to give our very best,"" Marsya acknowledges. Most of the songs have roots since VOB were still in middle school, each immaculately capturing their emotional responses to the variety of experiences they have gone through, transcribed and transformed into a combination of lyrics and melodies feeding off of raw energy and passion. Focus track ""Age Oriented"" is a protest song aimed towards age restriction that they once had to endure because they were playing rock music at such a young age. The piece lays bare their anger as tight and heavy riffs roar atop Sitti's groovy thumping beats and Widi's dexterous basslines. “More often than not, we were told it was ‘inappropriate and too soon’ and we ‘did not have enough experience’. There is a partiality towards age being the main benchmark to determine the merit of one’s artistic work. It meant the young must wait until they reach a certain age deemed worthy of independence to show their true potential,” Marsya remarks. The role of vocal director Irvan Natadiningrat has also become more significant in developing VOB's trademark sound. Take What's the Holy (Nobel) Today?"" for example. Irvan suggested the inclusion of the dramatic marching chant in the song. This powerful addition could make it the anti-war anthem for the modern generation. "The Enemy of Earth is You"" addresses the negative impacts of climate change. Never in their wildest dreams would they expect massive natural disasters to affect their village. Were they simply a show of might by nature's customary dynamics? Or are we, as human beings, to blame for our greed, ignorance, and narcissism? Writing instrumental “Kawani” felt fresh and intriguing for VOB. They had a unique opportunity to express their enthusiasm for Sundanese music, which they likewise hold in high regard. "In Sundanese, 'Kawani' means courage. This song represents the bravery with which we girls have refused to be treated as something ‘sweet and beautiful’. We are greater than that. That courage is reflected in the rhythms' dynamic quality. We may appear to be serene and unruffled, yet we can abruptly change into something else that is challenging to control,” according to Sitti.

Play that funky music white boy! In 1977, San Francisco singer-songwriter Matthew Larkin Cassell privately pressed and distributed his debut LP “Pieces” to little fanfare. It took over two decades and being sampled by Madlib for listeners everywhere to recognize Cassell’s unique combination of soul, funk, and rock as ahead of its time. Even now, 45 years after its release, the record sounds fresh, appealing to fans of A.O.R, blue-eyed soul, and even city pop. Compiling three studio EPs and a live recording, this LP is the culmination of Hovlakin’s short but eventful career. Originally formed in 1979 by Taro Morishita (vo.) and Hosho Aoki (Dr.) in Saga prefecture, what started out as a fun project between Mahjong buddies quickly grew to become one of the most respected bands in the Japanese no-wave scene. With a quirky sense of humor and unique imagery Hovlakin manages to still sound fresh, nearly 40 years after their last release.

Life After Romance", the fourth album following "Hard Candy" (1976) and "Prone" (1979), the most popular album of his career, and NED DOHENY's only release in the 1980s, is being reissued for the first time on color LP. The most popular song on the album is a self-covered version of "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?" (Chaka Khan's version was a big hit as you know), but there are also "Love's A Heartache," "Heartbreak In The Making," and many others, The album also includes "Love's A Heartache" and "Heartbreak In The Making," both of which are sweet and soulful ballads as well as up-tempo songs that are full of Ned's unique compositional sensibilities. The musicians featured on the album are also gorgeous, including Jimmy Haslip, Abraham Laboriel, John Robinson, Gary Mallaber, Timothy Schmit, and many more.

The only officially released live recordings of Doji Morita have been "Tokyo Cathedral Saint Mary Live" and "FM Tokyo Pioneer Sound Approach Live Recording", both recorded in 1978. This album contains live recordings in 1980, and this is the first time ever that recordings from this period have been released.

Rashinban is a Japanese psychedelic rock band which was active in the 90s to early 00s. The founder Seiichi Yamamoto is well known as a guitarist of Japanese experimental/noise/space rock/tribal drumming band Boredoms. In 2024, P-vine is working on reissuing their albums on vinyl for the first time!

The album called "Fish Inn" was originallyreleased in 1984. The leader of the band Michiro Endo anticipated departing from punk rock and created this work, exploring a sound inclined towards psychedelic music, a challenging move that seemed to self-denounce The Stalin's previous style. Higo Hiroshi from Friction was also involved in the band as bassist during this recording. Endo reminisced later about the album as: "More specifically, the main theme was how to kill The Stalin." Following this release, The Stalin disbanded and marked it as their final album. Although the remix version produced by Bill Laswell released in 1986 is generally more highly regarded, P-vine focuses on the original version and reissues it on vinyl with the original artwork for the first time.

Hailing from the northern Thai city of Nakhon Sawan, the shoegaze/post-hardcore band "Telever" was formed in 2018. After releasing their debut EP "Have A Good Health," they garnered attention for their unique musical style, blending heavy, beautiful shoegaze sounds with powerful hardcore elements. They gained fans beyond the confines of their genre, earning spots as support acts for world-renowned bands like Fiddlehead and Turnover.

After approximately five years since their formation, their debut album "Inside the Game" has finally been released. It encapsulates the intensity and chill of Telever's music, where genres intersect.

The album kicks off with "Whole," featuring heavy guitar sounds reminiscent of DIIV's "Deceiver," perfectly blended with Tae's vocals, creating a flawless shoegaze experience. "Today" swiftly transitions into the post-hardcore scene, with emotional shouts and vocals amidst shoegaze guitar sounds, serving as an introduction to Telever's sound.

"Ghost," the third track, not only embraces traditional shoegaze approaches but also delivers heated guitar sounds reminiscent of emo. Even with heavy sounds, the title track "Inside the Game" successfully incorporates influences from 2000s emo and punk, giving it a pop sensibility.

In "Always," the eighth track, they showcase a dream-pop-infused shoegaze style from a slightly different angle. From Asia to the world, "Goodbye" closes the album with a continuous display of fresh shoegaze sounds. Telever is poised to garner global attention with this album.

The duo unit Samuel Purdey, consisting of Gavin Dodds and Barney Harle, both former members of Jamiroquai during its early tours, released their only album "Musically Adrift" in 1999. This album, which involved talents from the Steely Dan circle such as producer Elliot Scheiner and guitarist Elliot Randall, continues to shine even a quarter-century after its release, serving as an enduring masterpiece in the realm of contemporary AOR. P-vine is delighted to reissue this work on colored vinyl.

The album features standout tracks like "Lucky Radio," which was also released as a 7-inch single, along with the enchanting chord progressions and vocal harmonies of "Whatever I Do," the disco-infused number "Only When I'm With You" with memorable talkbox phrases, and a cover of Carole King's "Bitter With The Sweet." Each song is a masterpiece that allows you to savor the subtleties of songwriting within a mellow groove.

The long-awaited LP reissue of the avant-garde pop band "Noizunzuri," acclaimed as the Japanese Neu!, is here. This first album, originally released in 1985 through Telegraph, features the enigmatic participation of Jun Togawa on vocals. It's a bizarre record that represents indigenous Japanese rock originating from Kyoto!

Auto-Mod is known as a pioneer band in the Japanese positive punk scene, and their aesthetic and theatrical songs influenced many artists who followed in their footsteps. Their debut album was released in 1983 by Telegraph Records, which runned by a legendary photographer Yuichi Jibiki. Tomoyasu Hotei also played in Auto-Mod as a guitarist about 20 years before his name became famous with his work for Kill Bill's main theme. This is the first time the album is reissued on vinyl!

Friction is one of the first Japanese punk bands and formed by Reck, Chiko Hige and Lapis in Tokyo in March 1978, and now the band is still keeping active. Reck and Chiko Hige had previously been on the NY no wave scene as founding members of James Chance and the Contortions, and brought back the experience and influence to the Japanese music scene. It's no exaggeration to say that the band laid the foundation for alternative music in Japan. P-vine is proud of reissuing all of their albums on vinyl.

The second installment in Japanese singer-songwriter Saho Terao’s reimagining of Japanese folk songs! In Terao’s hands, the traditional music of Japan takes on completely new forms, transforming from lullabies to pop songs; from children’s play songs to somber piano ballads; from work songs to folk arias.

Across 16 tracks, Terao serves as both performer and archivist, chronicling music that’s being threatened by an aging population and youth gathering in urban centers. She preserves the melodies and lyrics perfectly, but modernizes many of these songs, occasionally giving them lush band arrangements that only a musician of her caliber could pull off.

“Tori ni Naritaiya” (lit. I want to be a bird), a song from Shiga prefecture with lyrics that are almost incomprehensible to a modern Japanese speaker, is given a west coast jazz spin, with a hard bop bass line that Mingus himself would have been proud of. “Nakunaiyo” (lit. Don’t Cry) a lullaby from the Amami Islands, sees Terao’s modern sensibilities meld perfectly with more traditional arrangements. The intro, in which Terao sings a capella over hand claps in a call and response between herself and a male choir. You can’t help but imagine that this is how this song has been performed for centuries, and when the rhythm section comes crashing in, the marriage of traditional melody and modern arrangements is complete.

The study of folk music often paints it as music of the past - stuck in the form that it was practiced in at its conception. But folk music, more so than any other genre, should evolve with the people and their music. Terao brings the traditional music of Japan to the 21st century, using her voice and arrangements to breathe life into music that faces the threat of extinction. Released on vinyl for the first time ever, Saho Terao’s My Favorite Children’s Songs 2 is an album you absolutely must not miss.

Perhaps more than any other musician of her generation, Japanese singer-songwriter Saho Terao has pursued the perfect “song”. In the 16 years since her debut album, Terao has made songs ranging from Joni-mitchell inspired folk ballads to pop renditions of traditional Japanese lullabies. Saho Terao’s ninth original studio album, Kita e Mukau (Going North) is a celebration of her history, but sounds fresh from beginning to end.

The diverse cast of supporting musicians should be familiar to fans of Terao, with musicians such as Reizaburo Adachi (ds, sax.), Wataru Iga (b.) (who form the three piece band Fuyu ni Wakarete along with Terao), Shuta Hasunuma (arr.), U-zhaan (Tabla), Mahito The People (gt.), Wakana Ikeda (fl.), and more appearing on the record. Although Terao’s soothing voice and piano playing form the basis of each of the songs, the arrangements are at times times fun and upbeat, at times bordering on avant-garde, and at times so beautiful that you’ll find yourself teary-eyed.

At first listen, the relaxed atmosphere and laid back beat of title track “Kita e Mukau” (“Going North”), devoted to Terao’s late father, makes it feel like a song perfect for a cloudy day. But repeated listens reveal the kind of stirring allegories that other words can’t do justice. The emotional power imbued in the song is concealed at first glance by a modern arrangement, but careful listeners will be rewarded with an emotional gut punch of a song. “Asadoya Yunta” is a folk song from the islands of Okinawa that’s been covered extensively, including versions by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yuta Orisaka, and Haruomi Hosono. But where the YMO members turn the tune into tropical electronica, and Orisaka turns it on its head with his psych folk interpretation, Terao keeps it simple. Perhaps it’s her extensive experience covering traditional folk songs in her Favorite Children’s Songs series, but Terao’s sparse piano accompaniment highlights the beautiful melody and her own voice. Despite the plethora of covers by some of Japan’s best musicians, Terao succeeds in making the song her own, while somehow keeping to its folkloric roots.

But perhaps the best example of Terao’s musicianship is in the album closer, “Yumagure (electric guitar version)”. The song was originally included on Ai no Himitsu (2009), and it’s a shining example of contemporary folk. Played over a simple piano arrangement, the song received high praise for its use of everyday imagery (“At twilight, I’ll gaze at the blurry moon”). But over a decade after its initial recording, Terao revisited the song, enlisting the help of Gezan’s Mahito the People on guitar. Mahito’s playing is delicate, coiling and intermingling with the melody and piano, and making expert use of reverb to create an atmosphere altogether different from the original.

What Kita e Mukau accomplishes may not be the perfect “song”, but it unifies the often disparate parts of Terao’s discography into one cohesive project. Pressed on black wax, this record from one of Japan’s foremost singer-songwriters is sure to be one of the essential releases of 2023.

Only a year after their collaboration with Fred Firth, Totsuzen Danball teamed up with English saxophonist Lol Coxhill to record this monster of an album! Reissued on analog vinyl for the first time ever!

Without DAWs and online file sharing (or really, the concept of online), Totsuzen Danball and Coxhill painstakingly sent each other tapes, overdubbing repeatedly to make the off-kilter rock and roll you hear on this album. Immediately, you can tell that every second of effort was worth it. The opening track “Moyou” (lit. pattern) is oddly charming, with a bouncing bassline, motorik-esque drum beat, and lyrics about being on all-fours at a pedestrian crossing. But Coxhill’s improvisations bring the song to another level, and as he squeaks notes out over a repeating guitar riff, you won’t be able to stop yourself from nodding your head.

Totsuzen Danball classic “Natsu wa Kagerou” (Also included on their first album, Can I?) also takes on a new dimension of freakiness when played with Coxhill, whose free improvisations seem to soar over the simple beat and vocals from Totsuzen Danball. Combined, they create a sound that is both pop and avant-garde, if only in spirit.

The first album from Totsuzen Danball, Can I? (1981) made waves with its experimental new wave sound, and the band suddenly found themselves with more overseas fans than they knew what to do with. Chief among them was Fred Frith, guitarist and co-founder of British art-rock group Henry Cow, who played with Totsuzen Danball during what was no doubt a legendary live show at Shinjuku Loft on July 23rd 1981. The recording from that night, originally released on cassette from Totsuzen Danball’s own label Floor - is finally getting an analog release! Listen as the sounds, and occasional noises, of two guitars, a pump organ, and drums intermingle to create something that’s never been heard before or since!

Recorded quietly in Minneapolis in 1977, the sole album from singer-songwriter and producer Ernie Story is one of the finest examples of the musical territory where AOR meets Modern Soul. Mellow grooves are a-plenty, but the occasional touch of gospel is what takes it up a notch.

Story’s experience providing songs for The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield, and The Chi-Lites should be proof enough that these songs are of the highest quality. But put down your needle and take one listen to the staccato rhythm guitar and wildly percussive beat of “disco City” and you won’t have any doubts! Or perhaps the acoustic instrumental number “The E Groove” is more your style. Maybe even the softly psychedelic band and soulful vocals of “Chain Gang” is what gets you going. Compiling Japanese hardcore punk band Aburadako’s earliest recordings, this collection of rarities and early singles is absolutely brutal! With songs taken from their earliest self-released flexi-disc, a Tokuma Japan punk compilation (Greatest Punk Hits (1983)), and their 1984 mini album, ADK is 14 songs of pure, unrestrained punk spirit! Hirotomo’s vocals are at times incomprehensible, and the recording quality isn’t the best - but who needs those when you have some of the heaviest basslines and brutal drum grooves to come out of Japan? Pressed on a limited edition picture disc, this compilation of Aburadako’s earliest recordings is a must-have for all fans of Japanese hardcore!

With a name translating to Suddenly Cardboard, the band’s trademark sense of humor is on full display. Whether it’s the sardonic anti-bossa of their cover of “A Girl From Ipanema”, or experimental tape manipulation on “ゆっくり立つ　ゆっくり座る” (lit. stand up slowly sit down slowly), you can’t help but be amazed at the band’s ability to communicate so much through their music. The Return of Sai Yoshiko! At first glance, the partnership between Jojo Hiroshige and Yoshiko Sai seems implausible. After all, what could the King of Noise and the mystical folk singer have in common?

Released in 2001, and marking the first musical work from Sai in over two decades, Crimson Voyage is dark swirling ambience, a spirited improvisation between a master of dark noise, and one of Japan’s most underrated singers. Sai’s voice, still as exhilarating as it was during Mangekyo, bursts forward from the depths of droning synthesizer and distorted guitar. Her clear, wordless vocalizations and sparse percussion playing fill sonic space, juxtaposed sharply with the undulating movement of the underlying drone, to create an atmosphere both meditative and breathtakingly beautiful. P-vine is thrilled to be reissuing Crimson Voyage for the first time ever on limited edition vinyl with an exclusive obi-strip.

Not for the faint of heart! Predating both Sonic Youth and Swans’ debut albums by a year, Zourokuno Kibyou, initially released in 1982, quickly vaulted Kansai noise rockers Hijokaidan to indie music fame. Compiling their early, borderline grotesque, extreme live performances, Zourokuno Kibyou is as much a historical document as it is one of the heaviest noise albums to ever come out of Japan. With cover art by legendary horror manga artist Hideshi Hino and a booklet containing photos from the wild performances that Hijokaidan was famous for, this is sure to satisfy even the most hardcore of hardcore fans.
