Following hot on the heels of Ethbo's excursion to Russia, with Letov, Suchillin and Pillayev, Howard Williams' Ethbo swivels its telescope to Deptford, South London in 1978.

The band Alternative TV were, and remain, a radical creative force. Originally formed by Mark Perry (Mark P), and Alex Fergusson (later of Psychic TV) in the early days of punk, when Perry was editor of the pioneering punk fanzine, Sniffin' Glue.

Early rehearsals were held in Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records studio, with Genesis P-Orridge on drums. After line-up changes, the 1978 release of Life After Life saw Dennis Burns on bass, Chris Bennett on drums, Kim Turner on guitar and Mark P. on vocals. The session was produced by prolific Trojan Records artist and producer Joe Sinclair, and released on the independent label Deptford Fun City Records.

The song presents a “conscious” lyric through an urban music form of its time. And here’s the result, more than 40 years on, the dub still rocks. Perry’s vocal, like no other from the punk era, talks of the afterlife, in a twisted nod to Nietzsche, he chants “Wake Me Up When We Are Dead”.

A Venn diagram of Mark P and Mark E Smith, leader of The Fall, would show some common ground. Both band leaders survived numerous member changes throughout the decades, had a baleful eye on the producers and consumers of their music, and expressed themselves through a poetic, existential form of lyric writing and musical experimentation. In the early days Smith cited Alternative TV in a list of favourite music - alongside Johnny Cash.

Remastered with love, pressed at RAND, with sleeve and label artwork re-jigged by Will Bankhead, there's no better way to skank yourself to Armageddon.

Time Suck / Hellbent is the first vinyl EP from Richmond, Virginia’s Added Dimensions (the home recording project helmed by Sarah Everton OF Blowdryer and Telepathic), following a self-released, self-titled cassette released in 2022. Sarah’s trebly/jangly guitar riffs and sneaky bass lines are backed by a charge of unfussy, driving drums from ROB Garcia, all cloaked in the perfect amount of lo-fi Tascam grit, as she lyrically pares down the heavy psychic weight of modern living (the social cost of convenience and connectivity, the inane routine of labor as a means of survival, etc.) into disarmingly hooky mini-manifestoes—even the sugar-coated melodies can’t hide the harsh truths behind lines like “every day, same as before” (“Interruption”). Wire rubbing elbows with the Shop Assistants as a C86 band? A Kim Deal-fronted Urinals? Charms you can’t resist!

If anything has been brought up and adorned by this team of veteran punks from Brest, it is well crafted moody punk songs. Their debut looks like a single from back in the day, Grisaille is no stranger to the heavy dose of melody, angst and desperation that characterize their other projects. But while all of these projects are rooted in the classic French territory, their sound here is also a nod to the Copenhagen/Umeå scene, reminiscent of late Gorilla Angreb era with their twangy guitar chords or the flawless production on the early Masshysteri records. In January 1983, Minor Threat went into Inner Ear Studio for the first time as a five-piece (Brian Baker had moved from bass to second guitar and Steve Hansgen was now playing bass). They had six new songs that would end up being the center piece of what became the Out of Step 12" EP. The band had also decided to re-record the song "Out of Step" with some extra language to try to clarify the lyrics, as well as "Cashing In", a tongue-in-cheek song about the DC punk scene which they had only played live once. After much debate, "Cashing In" was added as a hidden track on the original vinyl release though not listed on the cover or label. There was still blank tape on the reel, so they decided to record an instrumental with the working title, "Addams Family" and then recorded new versions of "In My Eyes" and "Filler" to hear what they sounded like with two guitars. "Addams Family" ended up being used as a coda to "Cashing In", but the other two songs were never mixed and largely forgotten for over 35 years until the multitrack tapes were taken into the studio to be digitized in 2021. Surprised by the discovery, Ian and Don Zientara mixed the two songs along with the complete take of "Addams Family". These outtakes are now being released on a 7" to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Out of Step.

Turbarum is Latin for turba, meaning stir, disturbance, tumult, uproar or trouble.

Ostraca are potsherds (a broken piece of ceramic material) used for writing. Almost all found in Greece are incised; in Athens they were used particularly in voting in ostracism.

The sounds carved into the flesh of Drippy are about as easy to describe as training a dog to understand the intricacies of quantum physics. “Springtime” exhibits the band's growing strength in harmonic arrangement, whilst staying true to their taut roots - allowing the lyrics to shimmer. Following the arc of a relationship on the rocks and both people coming to terms with their situation, the song is a rare moment of vulnerability for the band that demonstrates their range. The flip side of the EP sees “Mercenary” deliver the sort of post-punk punch that fans have come to expect from the band. Brutish, brash & refusing to sit still; all the makings of a classic Vintage Crop number. Paired with lyrics exploring the online music scene, the track pokes fun at the “Internet Sound” that now dominates the underground.

The ties that bind together bands know nothing of national borders or oceans between continents, and for punk bands on tour, these relationships run deep. The latest addition to American punk band THE Drowns (based in Seattle, WA) is guitarist Simon, who played for years with the UK's Wonk Unit. Simon and his former Wonk Unit bandmate Alex helped book THE Drowns on a UK tour, and when both bands met each other in full in London, they weren't just fast friends, but like family. On this release, each band contributes one brand new song. THE Drowns, armed with their sharp rock 'n roll sound, set their sights on a protest song about the state of the US in recent years, aptly titled "The Beast," while Wonk Unit opt for more personal territory with “Rebecca,” which deals with issues related to substance abuse, personal responsibility, and mental health. Taken together, the songs that comprise this split 7" represent two bands separated by geography, but united by friendship, mutual sonic admiration, and common purpose. Pirates Press Records is thrilled to bring them to the world on two colored vinyl variants, housed in an incredible spot UV jacket conceived by Zak Kaplan.

When The Steves' two extremely limited (maybe 100-200 of each?) EPs were released back in 1980 and '81 respectively, the squares around Harvard's newsroom were aghast at the audacity of this group. Having the stones to release such crudely-rhythmic, near mechanical and downright terse tunes in the day's often long winded prog rockin' ballad heavy radio reality that were too robotic to be “punk” and too unruly to be anything but was, to say the least, a bold move. Sure to cause an uproar in the halls, protests in the classroom and uninvited dancing in the streets! In the annals of New England's rock journalism, there is not a mountain of coverage on The Steves, certainly not as much as the Alan Parsons Project or Aerosmith, but the fact remains that they were a fully charged powder keg of raw energy and new musical direction that seemed to elude most of the world back then. Not to say they didn't get any light shone on them, they did get a fair amount of airplay on the college stations around Boston and even appeared on the cover of Boston Rock magazine. It is Iron Lung Records' distinct pleasure to offer the modern world a new chance to discover the ever vital and effervescent music of The Steves' initial EPs along with a third EP of songs never released on vinyl until now that were recorded at the time or shortly after the initial sessions. A true synth-punk/KBD treasure. Obscurity is for suckers. Let's get shakin'! 700 copies of each EP on black 70gr vinyl housed in a 12pt reverse board glue pocket sleeve with faithful reproductions of the original art. Originally produced by V. Ray, Darlene Wilson and The Steves. Remastered by John Golden in 2023. These reissues are dedicated to Steve Arey, a great drummer and the original steve.

This is the original Breeders, formed in Champaign, IL, in the early-eighties. They released a 7" EP titled "Zen Punk" and an eight song cassette titled "Things Happen". This is a little hidden gem of Midwestern punk. Three songs, remastered for the occasion. A side is an elaborate song between Punk Rock and No Wave, that brings in mind bands like Gang of Four, Contortions, Wire,... On the flip side, two miniatures on the verge of hardcore. Think early Husker Du, Minor Threat and White Cross. Comes with the original artwork and a sticker!

THE Vacant LOT are a first wave punk band from Canberra that released one lone EP in 1981 on the Thought Criminals’ label, Doublethink Records. They played a few gigs and broke up shortly after. What they left behind was a bit of a head scratcher for most with two songs of rough and tumble KBD / MurderPunk / proto-hardcore and two songs of pulsing, keyboard driven post-punk in the Wire Chairs Missing vein that once sold out, sort of faded into obscurity. Now with a 2022 remaster from Mikey Young and a renewed vigor for creative activity since 2014, Living Underground finally gets the proper reissue treatment. Faithfully and lovingly recreated to be exactly the same as the elusive original issue.

Dernier Soir is one of the songs of the forthcoming LP, and it is now also available on a 7″ single, albeit in a slightly different version. It is a killer late ’70s pop punk hit that deserves to have its own single. If Dernier Soir is diagnostic of the quality of the new LP, better set some money aside for an immediate purchase. Almost forgot to mention it, but don’t miss out on flipside Pas De Regrets, which is a worthy B-side track.
