Swedish punk began in the late ‘70s and by the mid-‘80s, the small steel mill town of Fagersta had seven bands, immortalised on rare compilation The Vikings Are Coming, which is surprisingly diverse: Bizarr’s old-school punk is influenced by the Clash and SLF; Cruel Maniacs give social criticism and Crude SS’s hardcoredraws on Discharge; Rescues In Future’s speedcore is super melodic, influenced by Husker Du; Fear of War’s thrash is anti-religious and there’s more thrash from Bedrovlerz (or ‘Miserablerz’), while Ugly Squaw proffer unique power-punk humour (also making an incognito faux-reggae appearance as Rasta Boys). This edition revives the ori- ginal Swedish version released on Uproar Records in l985, giving us the full monty of this must-have anthology.

Bristol new wave quartet the Numbers formed in 1977 with vocalist/rhythm guitarist Nick McAuley, bassist Wayne Kingston, drummer Lee Gardener and future Massive Attack guitarist Angelo Bruschini. Heavily influenced by Bowie’s Berlin trilogy, early recordings surfaced on compilations issued by the local Heartbeat label in 1979, namely the power- punk-pop ‘Alternative Suicide’ on 4 Alternatives and the funked-up ‘Cross Slide’ on Avon Calling. This excellent compilation pairs those songs with unreleased demos, giving us the complete picture of a band far ahead of their time, with Bruschini already on dazzling form.

Portsmouth’s Hector are widely regarded as the very best of the Junkshop Glam Rock bands introduced to us in the early 2000s by the RPM’s lipsmackin 70’s CD series. Recently discovered archive analogue tape recordings found in the attic of frontman Phil Brown form this unique LP. The band’s original DJM singles together with “Demolition”, an unreleased third single, join forces with outtakes, demos, live and rehearsal recordings to make this release an unmissable opportunity for glam rock fans worldwide to hear more from the band whose anthem “Wired Up” has been adopted as a battle cry by a new audience of fans with books, fanzines, radio shows and club nights proudly named after it. Hector’s “Wired Up” was released in 1973. It had all the ingredients of a hit single. It should have topped the charts and launched a spectacular career for the band. In a fair world, the name “Hector” would be mentioned alongside bands like Sweet and Slade. Unfortunately, timing and luck weren’t on their side. The product was there, the press coverage was there, the Radio 1 airplay (which was everything back then) wasn’t and the kids that did hear it must have been deaf, dumb and blind. The plug was finally pulled in 1975 after their second single “Bye Bye Bad Days”, another poky punch of proto punk dressed up in a velvet glove, also failed to become a heavy-hitter. “Demolition – The Wired Up World Of Hector” is not a phoenix from the ashes. Discovered by punk journa- list Alan Anger, they signed to Beggar’s Banquet in 1979 for this riveting debut, which included the top-40 single, ‘You Need Wheels,’ as well as power-pop ‘Plastic Smile’ and reggae-influenced ‘Give It To Me Now.’ This brilliant LP captures the band’s dynamic start, emphasising the glory days of their short-lived grea- tness, before Mick Talbot joined Dexy’s Midnight Runners and ultimately formed the Style Council with Paul Weller.

Neo-Mod act the Carpettes began as a Stones-influenced school band, formed in the small northeast Norman town of Houghton-le-Spring in the mid-l97Os, the trio of frontman Neil Thompson, bassist George Maddison, and drummer Kevin Heard shifting to punk before signing to Small Wonder as a Mod revival act. By the time they joined the Beggar’s Banquet roster in 1978, Heard was replaced by Tim Wilder (with Simon Smith of the Merton Parkas briefly in the fold). Sophomore album Fight Amongst Yourselves is arguably their best, the appealing material ranging from the socially-relevant power-pop of the title track and the pop-punk of ‘The Reason I’m Lonely’ to the reggae cadences of ‘The Last Lone Ranger’.

Legend has it that The Blood were ‘discovered’ by Cockney Rejects vocalist Jeff ‘Stinky Turner’ Geggus on the top deck of a bus in Charlton. What they were all doing on the South East London bus has never been fully explained! Still, it was Jeff who introduced Coming Blood (as they were then known) to ‘Sounds’ journalist Garry Bushell and, suitably impressed, he offered them a spot on the fourth volume of the Oi! compilation series, “Oi! Oi! That’s Yer Lot”. It wasn’t just the Punk scene that took to the band, the more open minded in the Metal fraternity also embraced them, making them one of the first Punk-Metal crossover bands, equally at home with followers of the Anti Nowhere League or Motorhead. Though the initial career of The Blood may only have been brief, the two singles, 12” and album they released have all stood the test of time, many of the songs later covered by bands not even born when they were first recorded! Easily one of the greatest roots reggae albums of all time, Soul Rebels resulted from the intensive partnership brokered by the group and maverick producer, Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It was the first Wailers 'concept' album, conceived as a long-player based on a rebellious theme, rather than a collection of isolated singles, and the presence of the Barrett brothers in the rhythm section pointed the way for greater glories to come. The Wailers first formed as an unruly five-piece in 1963, with Junior Braithwaite as lead singer and Beverley Kelso an early member, sometimes replaced by Cherry Green. During their long tenure at Studio One, Bob Marley gradually shifted to the lead vocal role and the robust core of Marley, Peter Tosh, and Neville Livingston, aka Bunny Wailer, soon emerged as the mainstays of the group. Perry was involved with the Wailers at Studio One, using their talents for backing vocals on some of his solo work, but the partnership that yielded Soul Rebels was in an entirely different league. The title track, Tosh's anguished "400 Years and "Corner Stone" are legendary for their intense power; "It's Alright" set the template for the later "Night Shift," "My Cup" was an individual barebones reading of James Brown's "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry," while the playful "Try Me" and "No Water" are suggestive odes. Tosh's dejected "No Sympathy" and the spirited "Soul Almighty" are other winners and the "Cloud 9" revamp "Rebel's Hop" is another joy. All killer, no filler!

Live at the Witch Trials was the debut studio album by The Fall. It was released in March 1979, through record label Step-Forward. Despite it's title, it is not a live album. The album was recorded at Camden Sound Suite on 15 December 1978 and mixed by producer Bob Sargeant the next day. The group had been booked into the studio for a week but Mark E. Smith had fallen ill, leading to the cancellation of the first three days. Some songs dated from earlier incarnations of the group with both Tony Friel and Una Baines featuring on the writing credits.

Founded by its only constant member, Mark E. Smith, The Fall formed in Manchester in 1976 and were one of the most prominent post-punk groups in the world. Musically, there may have been several stylistic changes over the years, but it was often characterised by an abrasive guitar-driven sound and frequent use of repetition, always underpinned by Smith's distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics. “Dragnet” is the second studio album – released 26th October 1979. Originally released through record label Step-Forward, it predicated 2 major factors in the group’s career – high productivity and high group turnover. The album has historically garnered excellent reviews, including 4/5 in Mojo, 8.7/10 on Pitchfork and 4/5 in Q Magazine. Featuring the one and only Mark E. 77-Early Years-79 is a compilation of the band's first four singles, all originally issued on Step Forward Records, and was first released as an LP in 1981. One album track ("Dice Man" from Dragnet) is also included, and a CD reissue in 2000 adds two tracks from the various artists compilation Short Circuit: Live at the Electric Ballroom, from the same time. 2002's Early Singles drops "Dice Man" and adds three singles recorded for Kamera Records in 1981 and 1982, with their B-sides. In 2003, tracks from the Step Forward singles and two albums recorded for the label were selected for It's the New Thing! - The Step Forward Years. The first of multiple Fall compilation albums and certainly one of the most valuable.

Adventurous southern California punk trio Agent Orange was the first band to mix surf rock with punk. The group was formed in 1979 in Placentia, a small town close to Fullerton and Anaheim, by frontman Mike Palm on guitar and lead vocals, Steve Soto on bass and Scott Miller on drums. That early line up recorded the classic version of "Bloodstains" in 1979 as a demo produced by Daniel R. van Patten (of the group Berlin). A year later it was included on the seminal Rodney On The Roq compilation album released by Posh Boy Records. Meanwhile James Levesque had replaced Steve Soto (Adolescents) and the new line up released their own self produced and self released 7" ep in 1980. A year later, the group signed with Robbie Fields' Posh Boy Records for their debut LP Living In Darkness, co-produced by Fields and former Simpletones guitarist Jay Lansford. The album was recorded at Brian Elliott’s store front studio in North Hollywood (a few years before Elliott struck gold writing Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach”).

Girls At Our Best! were one of the greatest and most influential bands to emerge in the early 1980s as part of a new wave of independent acts. DJ John Peel championed them, playing their singles repeatedly and inviting them to record a session for his programme. Wry vocalist Judy Evans and brutal yet melodic guitarist James Alan who’d met at art college in Leeds fronted Girls At Our Best!, the proto-Indie band that formed from the ashes of Alan’s 1977 punk band SOS! Pleasure, the sole album, reached number two in the Indie Chart. It was an album so different from the rest of the post-punk indie pack that you can still play it now and completely baffle new listeners. Formed on a grim council estate in Edinburgh in l979 by singer Terry Buchan and guitarist Stevie Ross with bassist Alan Paget and drummer Andy McNiven, The Exploited became one of the most popular and notorious of all hardcore punk bands. When they signed to Secret Records in l98l for debut LP Punks Not Dead, Terry had been replaced by his ex-soldier brother Wattie, with guitarist Big John Duncan, drummer Drum Stix, and bassist Gary McCormack; by the time “Let’s Start A War…” was released, the group featured Wattie’s brother Willie on drums and Billy Dunn on bass, while “Horror Epics” had Wayne Tyas on bass and Karl ‘Egghead’ Morris on guitar.
