Aqua Blue Vinyl. Limited to 350 copies.SALTPIG is a bit of a mystery. The band just showed up seemingly out of nowhere, album in hand, with the music loudly speaking for itself. As it soon became known, SALTPIG is a two person band with Fabio Alessandrini (formerly of Annihilator) on drums and Mitch Davis handling vocals, guitar and all of the other layers of noise that can be heard on the record. The music that came out of this pairing has elements of doom/stoner/psych/occult metal and others, but they didn't go into it with anything that specific in mind. They just make the music they want to hear. Davis has been working with bands/artists including LA Guns, Damon Albarn, Billy Squier, Stephen Malkmus, Mark Lanegan, Sunbomb and U2, but SALTPIG is obviously a very different animal. For his own band, Mitch created a sound that is much darker. When he started writing the SALTPIG tracks, it pretty quickly turned into this debut album. Most of the tracking was done in their respective studios, with Fabio in Italy, and Mitch in New York where he'd do all of the final recording, production and mixing. It's melodic but embraces dissonance. It's noisy and dirty and evil sounding. Underproduced and real. It embraces imperfections as only a human can do.

Crumbs have been incubating this, their second album, for a few years now. Who knows how they kept all the energy in check. It must have been like sitting on a volcano. The songs burst out with pure pop fire, sending splinters of guitar, sharp lyrics and snatches of the catchiest backing vocals.

The rhythm section (Jamie and Gem): it’s like Delta 5 meeting Le Tigre in a dark alley in Leeds, fusing blindly and completely, and then forcing its way into the back entrance of a venue, sending volts through the limbs of the unwitting punters, forcing them to dance. This is Tight.

And as the lights come on and the indie kids throw themselves around, Ruth’s vocals sweetly assault their ears with anger, joy, political intelligence - and all around, Stuart’s guitar, sometimes twangly-melodic like the B52s, sometimes sweet and ringing like a memory of Scars, sometimes furious and feeding back, keeps you alert and thirsty for more.

These songs do NOT outstay their welcome. Starts and ends are cut hard: no pre-echo, no wistful, drawn-out regretful fade-outs. Crumbs have imbibed the key lessons taught by The Gang Of Four and The Au Pairs: never let the energy dissipate. But there is more than anger here. The band have smuggled a pop sweetness into the disciplined shapes of their angular songs. You’re Just Jealous has sharp edges, but it’s generous too.

The album will be available as a vinyl LP, CD, download and on streaming services.

Crumbs - a brief history. They are based in Leeds, where they are active movers in the DIY scene that currently thrives in the North of England. They recorded a Marc Riley session in 2016, released their first album (on Everything Sucks) in 2017, toured extensively in 2018 and 2019, playing at the Brudenell Social Club with Swearin’ and Jeffrey Lewis, and at plenty of fests such as LaDIYfest and Specialist Subject’s birthday all dayer in Bristol, A Real Cool Fest in Bradford, Mousetival in Stockton and the Cambridge Indiepop Alldayer.

They spent the pandemic creating these new, tightly-wound, irresistible pop songs.

Winston Hytwr is a co-release presented by K and Perennial.Born in Columbus, Ohio in March 1993, Winston Hightower is a prolific home recording artist with an expansive discography that crawls across space and genre. A staple in the Midwestern punk/DIY scene, his first work under the eponymous moniker was a self-released tape in January 2015. Since then, he has put out over 100 songs on tape, online and on video. The music defies easy categorization, and instead breezes through a landscape of synths that effortlessly blend pop, rock, rap and jazz. In doing so, Hightower continues to build a cohesive, ever-morphing experiment in pushing the boundaries of underground guitar music, all with his signature wit and charm. This body of work is almost entirely written and recorded alone in his room, causing many to refer to him as `the Black R Stevie Moore,' a fitting epithet as his influences likewise include modern "lo-fi" progenitors such as Guided by Voices and Vivian Girls. Hightower has released much of his own work and more on his tape label, the FAH-Q Catalog, which boasts over 12 releases (http://www.thefahqcatalog.com/) He has also collaborated with numerous other Ohio legends such as members of Times New Viking, Slant 6, and Ron House. When Richard Thompson began writing songs for his latest album, Ship to Shore, the artist was instinctively drawn to his own musical roots, employing them in the service of fashioning a deep and diverse 12-track collection that pulls from various styles, genres and eras, but remains unmistakably Richard Thompson. There’s the rumbling, Motown-style rhythm that propels “Trust,” and the straightforward riff-rock of “Turnstile Casanova.” The drone-y “The Old Pack Mule,” an “old man’s song” that takes musical cues from 1600s-era European music, and “Life’s a Bloody Show,” an ode to “snake-oil salesmen and hucksters” that floats on a glammy, cabaret-like melody that’s “almost like a parody of a Noël Coward song, or something from Berlin in the 1920s,” Thompson says. “I liked the idea of having a strong base to work from and reaching out from there,” he says. “And I think of my base as being British traditional music, but there’s also Scottish music, there’s Irish music. Darning Woman is an intentional, beautiful, sometimes confrontational album that shreds expectations of DIY, bedroom music, and feminine themes. After a phenomenally successful series of gigs in December 2022 marking the 40 th anniversary of their debut album 'A Taste of Pink', the band decided to make some new music. The recording was completed in two days, one of them in Studio 2 at Abbey Road. Their preference for recording quickly hasn't changed since they recorded that first album as teenagers, also in two days, in 1982. Biography
The Prisoners formed when they were still at school in Rochester, Kent. Between 1982 and 1986 the band released four albums plus several singles and EPs. Inspired by the local Medway DIY music ethic, their debut 'A Taste of Pink' and 'The Last Fourfathers' appeared on their own label, Own Up Records whilst "The WiserMiserDemelza" was released on Big Beat (Ace Records) and "In From The Cold" on Countdown (Stiff Records).
They earned a reputation as an incendiary live act as they plied their trade around the UK and Europe, building up a dedicated following and unknowingly inspiring a generation of future musicians. Their unique sound, based on instantly memorable and melodic songs surfing on a seething wave of brutal guitar, attention-grabbing, up-front Hammond and head-pounding rhythms, made for an explosive evening of entertainment. It was a unique combination of the sonic assault and danger of The Who and 60's garage-punk, the soulful vocals and dynamics of the Small Faces plus the groove and danceability of Booker T & the MGs. Throw in the intensity, drive and insolence of punk rock, as well as an unabashed love for instrumental TV themes and you had a wonderfully off-kilter version of where the real cool kids were at in the early '80s…
Despite some brushes with 'success', the pressures of hard living on the road took their toll and they quit in September 1986. They left behind a legacy and a sound that was inspirational to many that followed. Not many under the radar bands of the 80's would merit chapters dedicated to them in biographies of such luminaries as Steve LeMacq and Tim Burgess as well as being name checked as Brit-Pop forefathers. Their original albums make regular appearances in 'Great Lost Albums' lists and continue in print to this day.
James Taylor subsequently went on to gain huge success as the best pure Hammond player of his generation with his jazz and funk quartet (jtq). His playing and sound undoubtedly played a massive part in restoring the popularity of his chosen instrument.
That work started in The Prisoners.
Graham Day and Allan Crockford, both together and apart, continue to the present playing music that has ploughed a similar furrow to The Prisoners in such combos as The Prime Movers, The Solarflares, The Gaolers, The Galileo 7 and The Senior Service.

Two-time Juno Award winner Old Man Luedecke returns to the music world in 2024 with his new album "She Told Me Where to Go". Written while at sea on a scallop boat, it is a journey through the darkness and light of mid-life, and wrestles with the value of an artist in a time when music is ingested in 15 second increments. Produced by Afie Jurvanen (aka Bahamas) over 2 years, "She Told Me Where to Go" finds Luedecke abandoning his banjo for exhilarating parts unknown.

“I was just going over to my neighbour’s house to get some scallops for dinner”, says Chris Luedecke. “Knowing that the live music world had slowed, he asked me if I wanted a job on his boat”. And so, Chris began going out to sea in the North Atlantic, not far from his Nova Scotia home. He was giving up the game of music.

During downtimes, Chris' family would tap their maple trees and host all-day sap boils over an open fire. A frequent visitor was Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas). “What about not playing the banjo on your next record?” Afie suggested. Afie’s question was rooted in how much of a fan he was of Chris’s song writing, and that maybe perceptions of the banjo distracted from that. “I was a banjo player, known for my old-time Appalachian sound, and Afie thought that I should just write songs without the instrument in mind.”

It might have been easier to just quit the game and stick to scallops, but being able to let go of the instrument that made him brought new life to Luedecke - to his songs and the album that sprang from it.

Monster Squad's debut LP Strength Through Pain is back in print for its 20th anniversary! This 2004 LP was the definitive statement their fans were waiting for after 7 years of the band honing their sound and their message on tapes, CD-Rs, 7"s,comps, and splits, and it introduced them to wider audiences across the world! “Strength Through Pain -you can’t destroy the heart inside” was a lyric written by the band’s original guitarist Dave Gale in 1998. Its message of defiance against oppressive forces, internal or external, had become a central theme for the band and their audience. It was a rallying cry to overcome mental illness, abuse at home, government persecution, and all other ways young people are kept down. After Dave’s departure, the band crafted a new version of the song.The bonus flexi included with this re-issue of the LP features the original version of the song for the first time ever, along with “Won’t Conform,” another rare track from the era. The release of this record brought an even more ambitious slate of touring for the band, playing to bigger and bigger audiences, and crossing over to Europe for the first time. Reissues in both North America and Europe over the past 20 years have only solidified its place as the essential starting point for the band’s LP catalog. Depression is an album of overcoming the struggles that we all encounter in one form or another; seeing the strength that we all possess, though rarely recognizing it. The album is very much an illustration of personal stories from the band, their fans, friends, and loved ones. Monster Squad was formed in 1997 and after self-releasing a few tapes, a 7”, and a CD in the late ’90s/early ’00s, they’ve released records with Rodent Popsicle Records, Burnt Ramen Records, Charged Records, Punk Core Records, Glue Rot Records, and now Pirates Press Records in the USA, Tsor Records, Razorblade Music, and Voltage Records in Europe. Constant touring from 2003-09 across the USA, UK, and Europe earned them a massive and dedicated fan base. With the original release of "Depression," the band was able to tour Europe including appearances at Rebellion Fest and Moscow. Additionally, the band has been playing festivals like “Fuck You We Rock OK” Fest (starting in 2014), multiple times C.Y. Fest,, Punk Invasion Fest, and 40 Oz Fest. Since its release, the band has seen a flood of supporters reach out telling them how grateful they are about the lyrical content and how open frontman Phil Geck has been concerning mental health - helping listeners heal in their own ways. In addition to some amazing artwork by Winston Smith (Dead Kennedys, Green Day), the band collaborated with Bryan Lothian (A Global Threat) and Mike “Rufio” Kadomiya (life IS Posers) to throw some pretty incredible finishing touches on this extremely well-thought-out release! After a ten-year recording hiatus, all the while remaining the best of friends, this year, the time was just right. Some of the band’s personal dust settled and this album became a document of reflection. The band has grown so much, learned so much, and been continually inspired by the effect that they’ve had on their fans and the people around them. The record reflects that beautifully and musically sacrifices nothing in terms of the aggro and passion that has now driven them for over 20 years. Depression is a soundtrack to our intelligent screams at the world and ourselves; it’ll pick you up and set you back in motion, spinning around in that circle pit of life with the energy and heart of a teenager all over again! Pirates Press Records is thrilled to celebrate the long running California punk rock band Monster Squad with an extensive vinyl reissue campaign, starting from the beginning with their debut EP! The 6-song EP Not For Them is truly ground zero for Monster Squad, and a document of the band’s origins. In the summer of 2000, the band members moved in together in a shanty of a punk house with old gravestones strewn about the basement, across the street from their skate spot of choice in Vacaville, CA. These were heady times for young punks at the end of their teenage years. As their reputation as outspoken rabble rousers, grew, so too did the target on their backs, enduring fights with cops, jocks, and rednecks, and even having a Molotov cocktail tossed at their front door by a local neo-Nazi who apparently took issue with the band’s anti-racist and anti-fascist stance! Across six songs, the band members bashed out what could be considered a manifesto for what Monster Squad would be: shout-along choruses, pogo punk positivity, lyrics that stated in no uncertain terms their opposition to the Bush-era war machine & Proposition-8 era institutionalized homophobia. Perhaps most personally, the song “Pressure” featured an honest & relatable discussion of mental health issues that would become a recurring theme in the ensuing decades. Originally self-released via CD-Rs burned on the clock at Guitar Center on the band’s own Strength Through Pain Records, Monster Squad’s Not For Them is on vinyl for the first time ever! Solitude Aeturnus was founded in 1987 in Dallas, Texas, by guitarist John Perez. Being influenced by power metal bands (Metallica, Jag Panzer, Metal Church, Fates Warning), as well as the early crop of doom metal bands (Candlemass, St. Vitus, Trouble, Pentagram), Solitude Aeturnus allowed further inspirations from genres such as psychedelic and 70’s hard rock. All this melted into a style that would soon make the band a metal phenomenon.

'Through The Darkest Hour' Recorded in March ‘94 in England at Rhythm Studios, showed a simpler and heavier direction, proving to be the band’s best achievement yet, mainly because of an excellent production and top notch composing.

With the broader adoption of the internet around the turn of the century, how people would engage with and discover underground music would change forever. As a result of the new digital era, DIY was now worldwide, and no band embraced this new frontier better than Have A Nice Life. Formed in 2000 by duo Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga, the Middletown, CT-based pair would, throughout the 00s, self-release and share a number of demos and home recordings via early social media channels as well as establish its in-house label Enemies List Home Recordings. These first steps set in motion Have A Nice Life’s rise to renown as an icon of underground music in the internet age, culminating with the release of its pivotal 2008 debut album, Deathconsciousness. Through word of mouth and online discussion, Deathconsciousness became subject to viral praise thanks to its synthesis of bleak post-punk, lo-fi shoegaze, and carpets of hypnotic drone music. Eventually, this humble self-released project would attain the status of a post-internet cult classic, amassing Have A Nice Life a fervent online following that the band would interact with in kind.

In an effort to thank and continue to engage with Have A Nice Life’s internet cult following, Barrett and Macuga would regularly share links to old demos, works in progress, and outtakes from the recording of Deathconsciousness. Over time, a group of fans would compile these demos into an unofficial release. Dubbed Voids, this fan-made compilation several alternate takes of tracks from Deathconsciousness, as well as a handful of early versions of songs that would appear on Have A Nice Life’s two following albums, The Unnatural World and Sea Of Worry. Fans swarmed around this compilation, accompanied by loud calls for it to receive a physical release. A tape pressing of Voids would be released via Music Ruins Lives, a DIY label run by Have A Nice Life superfan Thom Wasluck, also known for his band Planning for Burial. Between both instances of the tape swiftly selling out and the compilation’s long absence from streaming services, Voids has historically been an elusive release to track down, only available in the obscurest corners of the internet or physically on the secondary market at eye-wateringly high prices.

Over a decade since its initial, unofficial release in 2011, The Flenser is proud to reissue Have A Nice Life’s Voids for the first time ever in an official capacity in physical form.
