With Brodequin, what you see is what you get. After all, the band are named after a French medieval torture device. Of course, Brodequin come with their own history. Brothers Jamie and Mike Bailey have been banging their heads together since 1998, before their debut album catapulted them far beyond their hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. But after seizing the throne as one of the most brutal rulers in all of death metal, Brodequin disappeared into the shadows. Now, after 20 years, Brodequin have returned with ‘Harbinger of Woe’. Their long-awaited fourth album does not disappoint, either. Lead single “Of Pillars and Trees” is classic Brodequin. The riffs churn severed limbs through a meat grinder. Once upon a time, Helga Gabriel was sequestered away in the far reaches of the Swedish hinterland. She sang in choirs, but in reality, the lake and woods were always her church. Her voice drifted like birds through an evening mist, chanting psalms amidst birch and pine. But in 2019, a calling stirred within Helga. She traveled 800 miles north to North Yorkshire, where she met three childhood friends and a precocious poly-instrumentalist. The rest is history. Helga was born. Helga draw on many different influences: Swedish folk, progressive metal, post-rock, pop, black metal. Their debut album, ‘Wrapped in Mist’, summons formidable drumming, spectral strings and chugging riffs into lamentations on mortality and metal health. They’re just getting started. Helfró emerged from desolation. When his previous band Ophidian I went into hiatus in 2015, drummer Ragnar Sverrisson started chiseling away at his own cruel vision of black metal, late into the brutal Icelandic night. From that intense period of loneliness, Helfró carved their own way into the extreme metal landscape. Now, the hooded duo are returning with their follow-up. ‘Tálgröf’ rips off plenty of Helfró’s signature, furious tremolo riffs - “Fláráð Fræði” shakes with the fury of a hailstorm. But while their new album delves deeper into addiction and intrusive thought patterns, it also expands beyond the rigid world of black metal.
