Breath Of Fire II has consumed many a plucky gamer’s time since its release in the mid-90s when it made its first appearance on the SNES console. A whole new generation later discovered the game when it was ported over to the Game Boy Advance at the beginning of the 21st century, and then again when it was released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2007. The epic scope of its storyline, characterisations and turn-based combat have become the things of legend amongst the faithful and, as is to be expected, the 16-BIT soundtrack - this time composed by Capcom Sound Team’s Yuko Takehara - is indicative of the adventures that await any and all RPG junkies who dare to enter the Breath Of Fire world.

Presented on limited edition vinyl - the first time the score has been available on the format - with artwork by Tbone & AlJax and featuring liner notes by Axe of the Blood God podcast host Nadia Oxford, this is one release that both Breath Of Fire aficionados and video game soundtrack collectors will not want to miss!

A follow-up to the much-loved Contra: Hard Corps (aka Shin Contra), this new instalment in the Contra universe sees the Earth being terrorized by the organization “Blood Falcon,” and only one man - Bill Rizer - can stop them… by blowing the ever-loving hell out of everything in his way!

Released in late 2002 across the U.S. and Japan, with copies reaching European shores in early 2003, this run-and-gun action masterpiece took advantage of its PS2 platform by implementing the use of polygonal graphics to its 2D side view perspective, adding a new depth to the on-screen carnage not yet seen in the series. And if the adrenaline-pumping visual mayhem wasn’t already enough, Konami made the wise decision to turn the soundtrack up to eleven by composing a heavy metal industrial techno score that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Fear Factory remix album. It’s an absolute assault on the senses!

Originally released on CD in Japan in December 2002 (good luck finding a copy that’s under $100!), the incredible score to Contra: Shattered Soldier has since eluded a vinyl pressing… until now! Pressed onto 2 slices of 12” wax available in two different variants - a red / yellow swirl and a limited edition yellow, orange and red splatter - and featuring art by the one and only Johnny Dombrowski, this is the definitive release of one of the best VGM soundtracks of the early 2000s. The sixth entry in the Contra series - and the first to reach Sega consoles - Hard Corps exploded onto players’ screens in the latter half of 1994, burning as many eyeballs with its intense combat as it did city landscapes in the game itself. Featuring choosable characters, swappable weapons, branching storylines and multiple endings, Hard Corps became a firm favourite for Contra-heads despite its notoriously high difficultly level.

Complementing the utter chaos is Konami Kukeiha Club’s score. The music’s ability to drive the action hardly ever relents, slapping into your ears like waves of explosive pressure from one of the game’s many explosions. Sometimes playful, sometimes funky but always driving the conflicts forward, is it any wonder why the Contra: Hard Corps soundtrack is one of the holy grails amongst VGM enthusiasts? Oh and keep your ears open for the Castlevania Vampire Killer remix, as heard in the secret battle stadium stage!

Storming into arcades in 1987, Taito’s Theninjawarriors became an instant hit due to its smooth gameplay style, well-rendered graphics and superb soundtrack. The game - presented in a triptych arcade cabinet, offering a glorious “triple-widescreen” presentation of the action - was set in the not-too-distant future of 1993, where a group of scientists create two ninja androids to tackle - and bring down - the President and his hyper-authoritarian regime, in an explosive suicidal mission of rebellion…

Hisayoshi Ogura - the composer of Darius - brings his imitable style to the proceedings. Many VGM fans consider this to be one of the best video game soundtracks of the era and it isn’t difficult to understand why. Complimenting the side-scrolling action on screen perfectly, the score captures you with its complex melodies and outstanding arrangements and is utterly, utterly infectious!

This limited edition LP gatefold presentation features rare product artwork and liner notes from composer Hisayoshi Ogura himself!

It was inevitable that a successful game like Darius would receive a sequel, and in 1989 lucky gamers were treated to Darius II cabinets in their arcades. It has since gone on to become a fan favourite, and rightly so: you can’t mention scrolling shooters without mentioning Darius II.The game was ported over to gaming consoles in Japan the following year, and reached U.S. shores in 1991, under the title Sagaia, with a re-arranged soundtrack and different level layouts. But for purists the arcade version remained top dog, and it is with this in mind that we have pressed the original arcade version soundtrack for Darius II onto vinyl, making this its debut on the format!

Featuring liner notes from composer Hisayoshi Ogura and journalist Anthony John Agnello, and decored with rare production artwork within, this gatefold release of a bona fide shoot ‘em up soundtrack classic is not one fans of video game music and quintessential cabinet gaming will want to miss!

Upgrading the game mechanics improved playability immensely but it was Yoshino Aoki’s score which cemented the experience into the joy centres of players’ brains over twenty years ago.

Yoshino Aoki (Breath of Fire III & IV) was no stranger to the Mega Man franchise, having already worked on Mega Man X3 as an arranger for its CD release and performing as a vocalist on the Mega Man Battle & Chase score, but for Mega Man Battle Network 2 she was given full composer duties.
