After a decade of creating pioneering puppet series made for children, Gerry & Sylvia Anderson took their first steps into live action, with the 1969 feature film Doppelgänger
(re-titled outside Britain as Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun). This science-fiction film approached its outer space subject matter with a gritty realism and would set the tone
for what was to be their first live-action television series: UFO.
To complement the series, the Andersons frequent musical collaborator Barry Gray created a multifaceted score that gave the programme its own musical identity.

From small beginnings in 1974 as a local cinema and university event, Film Fest Gent has grown yearly in stature and is now recognised as one of the major destinations for the film industry.

A vital component is the celebration of film music in the shape of the World Soundtrack Awards which honours the very best composers at work in the world of cinema.

The BBC’s Third Programme aired four radio broadcasts between January 1964 and September 1965, collectively known as Inventions for Radio.
They were ground-breaking in both form and content, conceived by playwright Barry Bermange and consisting of the voices of the general public answering questions on four themes,
one for each programme: dreams, the existence of God, life after death and ageing. Delia Derbyshire was assigned by the Radiophonic Workshop to edit and add electronic music/ effects.
The collaborative result is dreamlike and mesmerising, an audial window to another era. For many years Derbyshire was not credited for her contribution, nor were the broadcasts available commercially,
although they still managed to acquire something of a cult following. This boxset duplicates the recent vinyl release on CD, with one disc for each broadcast and two further CDs of additional material.
The booklet includes notes by producer Mark Ayres on these extraordinary pieces which have been the most elusive of Twentieth Century classics until now.

Shigeru Umebayashi is an internationally renowned composer who is best known for creating ‘Yumeji’s Theme’ for Wong Karwai’s film In The Mood For Love.
In addition to collaborating with Wong Kar-Wai on 2046, Umebayashi was the music producer and composer for Zhang Yimou’s films House Of Flying Daggers and Curse Of The Golden Flower.

This is an updated version of Film Fest Ghent’s 2010 tribute to the composer’s work which featured his most celebrated music.
This edition includes material that has not been otherwise released featuring two pieces from A Single Man, a cue from the anthology film
Hero and a new arrangement from his breakthrough score, Moyou from Sorekara, which features in the film The Grandmaster.

Paddy Kingsland was the first Radiophonic composer to see a solo release of his compositions, although he is not credited on the sleeve. "Fourth Dimension", first released in 1973, showcased Kingsland's theme tunes for television and radio while at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The recordings feature a rock-style backing band and synthesisers including the VCS 3 and "Delaware" Synthi 100, and the track "Reg" from the album was also released as the B side to the 1973 single release of the iconic Doctor Who theme tune. Kingsland remained at the workshop for 21 years, leaving in 1981, during which time he composed music for much loved TV shows The Changes, Doctor Who and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy among others.

Music From the Terminator Movies, featuring music highlights from composers Brad Fiedel, Marco Beltrami, Danny Elfman, Lorne Balfe and Tom Holkenborg AKA Junkie XL.

Scoring for the Terminator franchise has come full circle and with this new album, London Music Works curates its musical journey. The album follows the scores chronologically, opening with Brad Fiedel’s pre-MIDI age synth clash between human and machine In Terminator and Terminator 2. Fiedel’s score is followed by Marco Beltrami’s predominantly orchestral backdrop in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Danny Elfman’s Terminator: Salvation score pulls back from the orchestral sound and morphs into a sensual man-machine contrast. In Terminator: Genisys, Lorne Balfe picks the vintage synth sound of Terminator 2, whilst creating his own fantastical soundscaping. The score for Terminator: Dark Fate shows the respect Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) pays to Brad Fiedel and his iconic 1984 theme. Here, Holkenborg has updated Fiedel’s work, with writing for, and performing on synthesizers from the 2010s, and as such the statements of the theme in this score have a richer, almost organic electronic sound.

The hugely successful Terminator movies centre on the battle for survival between humans and the world-spanning synthetic intelligence that is Skynet. The sci-fi action-adventure series was created by director James Cameron, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, a cyborg assassin. The first film was shown in July 1991 and since then the films, the 1984 main music theme, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator and Linda Hamilton’s feminist icon Sarah Connor have all achieved cult status.

Italian director Renato de Maria’s 2009 crime drama La Prima Linea (The Front Line) takes us back to the late seventies and the home-grown Italian terrorist cell of the same name. Based on the real memoirs of a Prima Linea member, Sergio Segio (played by Riccardo Scamarcio) the militant underground organisation employs violence to achieve their political ends and ultimately to attempt to free Sergio’s lover, Susanna, from prison. The beautiful and melancholic soundtrack is instantly recognisable as Max Richter’s work, making its debut here on vinyl for Record Store Day. Richter’s approach explores the feelings of the protagonist’s family, the Garveys, through intimate, small scale music. He tackles this psychological landscape by bringing a ritual quality to the score, while themes of departure and loss are represented by a sense of sonic decay, relying on the instrumentation of a few sustained tones on pianos, harps and celesta. Max Richter is a classically trained composer that defies boundaries. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music and finishing his studies under the tutelage of avant-garde composer Luciano Berio in Florence, Richter’s career has followed many paths. His musical output ranges from ballets (Wayne MacGregor’s Infra), reinventions of classical works (Vivaldi’s Four Seasons), collaborations with The Future Sound Of London, Roni Size and Vashti Bunyan to writing scores for film and TV (Waltz With Bashir, Lost and Found, Last Days on Mars) and solo work (Memoryhouse, The Blue Notebooks, 24 Postcards In Full Colour).

White Vinyl - 1970's Cult BBC TV Original Soundtrack - First Ever Release -
Written by Paddy Kingsland and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop The
critically acclaimed BBC TV series, The Changes, was first broadcast by the
BBC in in 1975, accompanied by music from electronic pioneer Paddy
Kingsland, who wrote and recorded the score while working at the BBC
Radiophonic Workshop. The 10 part series, adapted from Peter Dickinson's
book trilogy, was perfectly suited to Kingsland's seminal electronic style,
following a teenager living in a Britain where machinery and technology emit
a terrible, all-enveloping noise, causing the population to destroy them.
Kingsland used an early synthesiser, the EMS Synthi 100 (which was
apparently so large, they had to remove the doors of the studio to get it
through), overlaid with live instruments including sitar, percussion, tabla, flute
and horns to create a soundtrack which is indicative of exactly how the BBC
Radiophonic Workshop's early output influenced and informed the popular
electronic music of the Eighties and beyond. Kingsland went on to write the
music for (amongst others) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Radio and
TV series), Doctor Who and Around the World in 80 Days, as well as
composing for the KPM music library, who issued eight albums of his work.
An LP of his Radiophonic Workshop output, "The Fourth Dimension" , was
released by BBC Records in 1973.

Doctor Who – Revenge Of The Cybermen was the season 12 finale first broadcast on April 19th, 1975. As with so much television music of the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, the original master tapes of Carey Blyton’s score for Revenge of the Cybermen were not retained. The only surviving copy is a set of four 7”, 7.5ips “composer’s copy” domestic 1/4-inch tape. It is from those digital transfers that this release is taken. Sadly, and to Carey’s obvious and understandable disappointment, the completed music did not meet with the complete approval of the production team, and much of it was not used. Peter Howell of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop added some electronic embellishments and arranged some additional cues for parts two and three but some of that was also left on the proverbial cutting room floor. For this release, Carey’s original score is presented (and heard here for the first time) as written. This is followed by the additional, alternative, and “enhanced” cues, all of which were also on Carey Blyton’s tapes.

Doctor Who – Time And The Rani was the opening serial of season 24, first broadcast on September 7th, 1987. It marked the debut of Sylvester McCoy and featured CGI in a very basic form as the technology was still in development. It also debuted a new computer animated opening title sequence with a new synthesiser version of the theme created by Keff McCulloch.

The composer was invited to create incidental music for the series and became a regular member of the team also writing music for Delta & The Bannerman, Paradise Towers, Remembrance Of The Daleks, Silver Nemesis, Battlefield, Dimensions In Time and Shada.

Keff, Dominic Glynn and Mark Ayres were the composers for the last three years of Doctor Who on its original run that ended in 1989, the latter compiling and producing this release.

Still one of the most highly regarded horror films of all time, F.W. Murnau’s unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu (1922), is an Expressionist masterpiece of the silent era. Much of the original score by Hans Erdmann (meant to be played live by an orchestra) was lost, leading Nosferatu to inspire several subsequent soundtracks, the best known of which is by Hammer Horror composer James Bernard, written for the Tanis Film video reissue of the film in 1997. The world premiere of the score was performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra at the London Film Festival the same year and now, almost twenty years later, the score was pressed on vinyl for the first time by Silva Screen.

Originally released on white vinyl for Record Store Day 2021, this much sought after soundtrack is now available on a limited run of Transparent Red Vinyl. 2020 saw the release of the critically acclaimed “Audrey”, a documentary film taking an intimate look at Audrey Hepburn’s life with access to never-before-seen footage from her family’s personal collection and produced by the multi award-winning team behind “McQueen” and “Churchill”. The soundtrack was composed by Alex Somers, an American composer and producer who has written and collaborated on soundtracks including “We Bought A Zoo”, “How To Train Your Dragon Trilogy”, “Aloha”, “The Circle”, “Captain Fantastic”, “Shia LaBeouf's Honey Boy” and Taylor Swift's Netflix original documentary “Miss Americana”. His work was first noticed in 2009 with Riceboy Sleeps, his ambient album collaboration with partner Jónsi (Sigur Rós). Following “Riceboy Sleeps”, Alex co-produced Jónsi’s 2010 debut solo album “Go”. He then opened his own recording studio in Reykjavík where he co-produced and mixed Sigur Rós’ 2013 album “Valtari”, and continued to collaborate with artists Jónsi, Julianna Barwick, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Gyða Valtýsdóttir, Damien Rice, Amiina, Sin Fang, Briana Marela. “Audrey Hepburn was such a special person” Says Alex Somers. “It was my goal to tap into what made her such a one-of-a-kind soul and create a melodic and sonic accompaniment for her. Collaborating with Helena was a beautiful and rewarding experience. The music poured out and together we experimented and pushed deeper to tell Audrey’s story; there is music here that is dark and there is music here that is light and uplifting, but the common thread is that it is honest and true to the spark that was Audrey.”

First appearing on TV screens in September 1968, Joe 90 was a unique nine year old boy with the ability to absorb the brain patterns of top experts enabling him to become the most special agent of W.I.N. (World Intelligence Network). Whilst there are arguably better-known scores amongst Barry Gray's sublime catalogue of work with the Andersons, the composer's work for Joe 90 is in many ways the most consistent and inventive selection he ever wrote. Developing a theme for the new series was always the musician's starting point, and for Joe 90, the pop charts breezed into Gray's studio, with an opening tune featuring a genuine groove. Mixing Gray's inventive electronics with 60s "surf rock" guitars was an inspired decision. It is no wonder that this piece has gone on to enjoy a second life as a Northern Soul disco floor-filler. For episodic incidentals, Gray was freed from the detached unearthly premise of Captain Scarlet and able to bring back a playful sensibility and a more mature musical palette which are amply illustrated in this 24 track collection.
