everything is alive, slowdive's 5th record, is exactly what the title suggests: an exploration into the shimmering nature of life and the universal touch points within it. While there are parts of this record that could sit neatly next to the atmospheric quality of 1995's Pygmalion; everything is alive also manages to break down the boundaries of what's come before it. Spanning psychedelic soundscapes, pulsating 80's electronic elements and John Cale inspired journeys, the album lands immediately as something made for 2023 and beyond. For a genre that is often thought of as divisive, and often warrants introspection, here slowdive show their craft as the masters of it by pushing it outwards, beyond the singular; the end result being a record which feels as emotional and cathartic as it is hopeful.

Where the band attempted to put more song structures in place on Souvlaki, they began to incorporate more elements of ambient electronica on Pygmalion. Which resulted in a more complete album than the two previous albums.

The Shoegaze Pioneers

Slowdive was formed in Reading, England in the late 1980s and emerged from the burgeoning shoegaze and dream pop scene. Slowdive’s original lineup consisted of Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Christian Savill (guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass) and Adrian Sell (drums). In their early days, Slowdive experimented with atmospheric soundscapes and ethereal melodies inspired by bands like My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins, whose song titles also inspired their name. They recorded their first demos in a converted church and began playing local gigs, soon attracting the attention of independent label Creation Records. In this time before fame, Slowdive honed their distinctive blend of dreamy textures and hazy guitar sounds, which received critical acclaim but was still underground. Their debut album Just for a Day (1991) laid the foundation for their distinctive sound, but true commercial success eluded them at this stage. Little did they know that their subsequent releases would catapult them to the forefront of the shoegaze movement and cement their status as one of the genre’s most influential and beloved bands.

Grown into icons

The band’s 1991 debut vinyl, Just for a Day, laid the foundation for their unique musical direction with its swirling guitars and hazy melodies. Two years later, they released Souvlaki, a critically acclaimed masterpiece with captivating tracks like Alison and Dagger that solidified their position as shoegaze icons. After Souvlaki, the band struggled with internal problems, which led to a slight change in their sound. Their third vinyl Pygmalion, released in 1995, showed a more experimental approach, combining ambient elements and electronic influences. Unfortunately, tensions within the group eventually led to their breakup in 1995, but their legacy did not end there. Slowdive’s music continued to gain recognition and influence subsequent generations of shoegaze and alternative bands. In 2017, the band made a triumphant return with their fourth album, Slowdive – a testament to their continued creativity and relevance. Slowdive’s dreamy textures and Rachel Goswell’s ethereal vocals have left an indelible mark throughout their discography, making them one of the most revered and respected bands in the shoegaze genre, captivating listeners with their sonic tapestries for decades.

Rediscovery in the 2010s

Emerging from the shoegaze movement, the band created a distinctive sound characterized by ethereal vocals, dreamy guitars and haunting atmospheres. The sonic explorations and emotional depth of the vinyl Slouvaki resonated with listeners, earning them recognition and a loyal fan base. Slowdive’s ability to create hypnotic, otherworldly compositions paved the way for a new wave of alternative and shoegaze bands. Their influence reached far beyond the 1990s, influencing subsequent generations of artists in various genres, including indie rock, dream pop, and post-rock. The renewed interest in Slowdive’s music in the 2010s led to a reunion, and they continue to captivate audiences with their distinctive sound.
