On 3rd September 2017, director Mike Mills emailed Matt Berninger to introduce himself and in very short order, the most ambitious project of the National’s nearly 20-year career was born and plans for a hard-earned vacation died. The Los Angeles-based filmmaker was coming off his third feature, 20th Century Women, and was interested in working with the band on... something. A video maybe. Berninger, already a fan of Mills’ films, not only agreed to collaborate, he essentially handed over the keys to the band’s creative process.

The result is I Am Easy to Find, a 24-minute film by Mills starring Alicia Vikander, and I Am Easy to Find, a 68-minute album by the National. The former is not the video for the latter; the latter is not the soundtrack to the former. The two projects are, as Mills calls them, “Playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other” -- they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019, but don’t necessarily need one another. The movie was composed like a piece of music; the music was assembled like a film, by a film director. The frontman and natural focal point was deliberately and dramatically sidestaged in favour of a variety of female voices, nearly all of whom have long been in the group’s orbit. It is unlike anything either artist has ever attempted and also totally in line with how they’ve created for much of their careers.

For fans, Boxer is a profound personal meditation. Life decisions have been based on it. Relationships have been created and dissolved by it. For the band that recorded it, Boxer symbolizes a do-or-die moment; a final, give-it-everything-you've-got effort to make it work.

Released in May 2007, The National's fourth full-length is the album that saved them. It's where the Ohio-via-Brooklyn five-piece found the sound, success, and spiritual growth to become one of the most critically acclaimed bands of their time. Obsessively researched and featuring intimate interviews with the fighters who were there in the ring, Ryan Pinkard captures a transformative chapter in The National's story, revealing how their breakthrough album is deeply intertwined with their personal lives, the New York indie rock renaissance of the early aughts, and a generational experience in America.

Released a year before The National broke through with their third album Alligator, 2004’s Cherry Tree EP is a thrilling record which - thanks to ist collection of delicate ballads and anthemic crowd-pleasers - sums up what they do best in under 30 minutes. Now a fi rm fan-favourite, among Cherry Tree’s seven tracks are now National classics ‘About Today’ and ‘All The Wine’, plus a thrilling live version of ‘Murder Me Rachael’ that reminds of the band’s fearsome early live performances. Cherry Tree can be seen as the record that marks the moment when The National had truly found themselves, a bridge from what went before to a band ready to conquer the World. And with this new master, it’s never sounded better too.

The National’s second album, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers (2003) proved a leap forward from 2001’s eponymous debut, showing a band adept at delivering warm embraces and gut punches in equal measure. With word of mouth now spreading on the band, critics proved equally enthusiastic... Pitchfork in their glowing review called it a “Gorgeous train wreck” that “Lives up to its blunt title (with) Matt Berninger’s self-eff acing barbs matched by the band’s equally potent hooks,” while Uncut also became early champions saying the album was “A genuine treasure... Livid as a bruise, this is brave, desperate, beautiful music.” No longer a secret among those that know, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers is an important record in The National’s discography with this new remaster showing that it’s more than standing the test of time.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021, The National’s self-titled debut album of sozzled Americana is a thing of beauty, laden with heavy hints that this was a special band in the making. Their fi rst release, The National arrived two years after The National formed, a time when they were juggling bandlife with needing to hold down full-time jobs. And while nods to the alt.rock artists that inspired them (Pavement, Silver Jews) can be heard, so too are the beginnings of something all their own – Matt Berninger’s stunning and unexpected lyrics being pinned to melodies that stop you in your tracks. The National marks the start point for one of the best bands of their generation with ist new master helping elevate it to new

The National HHV Records

The reserved rockers from Ohio

In the midst of the raucous Garage Rock Revival at the beginning of the 21st century, the five-member Ohio-based band The National stood out precisely because of their charming restraint. Inspired by California rockers Pavement, Matt, Aaron, Bryce, Brian, and Scott came together in 1999 after an early unsuccessful band project and recorded their first album, which was released two years later on the partially self-founded indie label Brassland, serving songs in the finest country and Americana style. Their band name serves as a canvas for the five, filled with meaning through lyrics: “We were trying to find a name that didn’t mean anything. That was sort of devoid of any kind of interpretation and wasn’t overly clever,” said lead singer Matt Berninger. The band keeps it equally simple in their instrumentation, relying primarily on guitars and expressive lyrics. The National gained even more attention than with their debut in 2003 with the follow-up Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, whose storytelling reminded of greats like Lou Reed and Nick Cave: the laid-back chamber pop with string arrangements worked especially well on a full-length album and catapulted the band onto the international market – the London-based Uncut magazine eventually crowned the record as the Album of the Year.

Figuring out the Unfathomable

As newcomers to the Beggars Banquet label, The National released Alligator in 2005 – the post-punk-inspired tracks earned the Ohio quintet numerous festival performances and sold-out venues internationally, and with the subsequent album Boxer in 2007, the country enthusiasts could finally prove themselves as major players in the global indie cosmos. The formula for the band’s success has been known since their debut, and yet The National consistently deliver mass-appealing indie rock that touches the heart and tackles lyrical themes of darkness: “You touch the scariest things and that’s how you defuse them. Artists make art because they’re trying to figure out something that’s too hard to figure out in any other form.” Matt Berninger’s vocals always appear reserved, but never emotionless, while the rest of the band weaves the words into dreamy soundscapes. Three years later, they released High Violet on the legendary 4AD label, enlisting guests like Sufjan Stevens, Richard Reed Perry of Arcade Fire, and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver into the studio – the result was, as always, nostalgic and anthemic.

A Spark That Hasn’t Faded

Trouble Will Find Me in 2013 also did not disappoint the fans. With each album, the band manages to elevate themselves thematically, as well as in terms of melodies and dramaturgy. Their now enormous success is due to their tireless work on new songs. It is almost presumed that Berninger describes himself when he sings, “I have only two emotions / Careful fear and dead devotion” – the album was nominated for a Grammy Award. In the same year, the tour documentary Mistaken for Strangers hit theaters, and the band performed on Saturday Night Live for the first time. With the albums Sleep Well Beast and I Am Easy to Find, the American nostalgics further expanded their success, with the former earning them a Grammy Award and their first number-one hit in the United States. Collaborations with Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers made their way onto the record First Two Pages of Frankenstein and the additional surprise album Laugh Track in 2023. But The National have also expressed themselves politically as they supported Barack Obama in his U.S. presidential candidacy and performed a concert for Hillary Clinton in 2016. And even after over 20 years of band history, the five still have the same creative drive in the studio: “The spark in the band hasn’t faded,” says multi-instrumentalist Aaron. A true blessing for the fans.
