For Anyone That Knows You, an album of mostly piano solos by Josiah Steinbrick, was recorded not for smoothness or posterity but to emphasize the piano as object, the person playing it, and the moment it sounds. On three of the pieces, the saxophone of Sam Gendel hovers over the piano like a faint change in the light, adding resonance and gentle reinforcement rather than counterpoint. Three others are delicate renditions: "Green Glass" interprets an untitled recording by Quechuan folk musicians Leandro Apaza Romas and Benjamin Clara Quispe; "Elyne Road" abbreviates one of Malian kora master Toumani Diabaté's most tender compositions; and "Lullaby" is an arrangement of a traditional Creole song, originally recorded in 1954 by the Haitian-American guitarist Frantz Casseus.

40th Anniversary Edition - newly remastered from themaster tapes, with an additional bonus LP of instrumentalsand the previously unreleased "Narration Theme."Daytime Viewing (1979-80) is an extended narrative song, based on a casual analysis of daytime television drama andthe audience phenomena such programming addresses. Thepiece explores the use of fantasy as a survival mechanismagainst loneliness, illustrating the human compulsion toinate the mundane to mythological proportions. A centralfemale character weaves tales, using threads of personalexperience and the idea of TV as friend, as mantra, and astransformational window between imagined spectacle andthe pedestrian plane.Originally released as a private cassette edition [recorded,1982; Chez Hum-Boom release, 1983] documenting thecollaborative performance piece of the same name byJacqueline Humbert & David Rosenboom. This heady, thoroughly enjoyable work was rst made available on CDand LP in 2013 by Unseen Worlds. Jacqueline Humbert(aka J. Jasmine) is a songwriter of brains and wit on parwith Robert Ashley, with whom she's worked extensively.David Rosenboom's complex, harmonic electronicarrangements are accentuated brilliantly by percussionfrom William Winant. Daytime Viewing can happily beadded to a small but signicant group of work that, through lesser-known paths, engaged in an equallyrevelatory reexamination of the Great American Songbookas Minimalism did with 20th Century composition.

- First time reissue, remastered by Stephan Mathieu- New liner notes by Clifford Allen- Download code included- For Fans of Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass//Dickie Landry & Lawrence Weiner's Having Been Built on Sand wasconceived as a vinyl edition and released by the Rüdiger Schöttlegallery in Munich with sleeve design by Weiner. The piece consists ofeight untitled tracks. Lawrence Weiner, Tina Girouard, and Britta LeVa recite text with Dickie Landry's woodwinds, all recorded in thenatural reverb of Robert Rauschenberg's studio, a former mission andchapel in Lower Manhattan. Layering Girouard in English, Le Va inGerman, and Weiner in English and German blocks of related orphysically proximal texts repeat, invert, and intersect with Landry'smusic as a constant. The layers of text and sound have meanings thatfluctuate in complexity and scope, and like much of Weiner's work, beyond mere facts. The first piece is a trio for Landry's keening tenor, repeatingwinnowed but breathy lines that contrast with and buoy Le Va's clear, husky phrases, building in intensity as Weiner, in English, offersstatements that are caught just off mic. The third cut adds Girouard, and one can hear woven parallels in the two women's voices, cadences, and pitches, with Weiner's cutting inflection dancing amidthem. Landry's bass clarinet is rich in its warble, full and gentle withwoody footfalls that demarcate shapes through the chorus. Vocalrhythmic cycles, wordless in nature, are the energy that coursesthrough the fourth song, urgent and sweaty as Weiner recitesstatements of political position in the Middle Ages, Le Va declaimingalongside in German. On soprano saxophone for the fifth tune,Landry pierces and darts in a bright manner in a private dialogue withhimself, echoing Steve Lacy as female voices nearly bury one anotherin closely valued hues. Weiner, meanwhile, volleys between the LP'stitle phrase and cornerstone proclamations such as "the artist mayconstruct the piece. The...

- First time reissue, remastered from original master tapes- Gatefold 2LP with period photos and new liner notes byClifford Allen- Download code included with 30 minutes of additionalbonus material- feat. Richard Peck, Robert Prado, Rusty Gilder, Jon Smith, Alan Braufman, David Lee- For Fans of Coltrane, Coleman, Ayler//On February 19, 1972, a crew of mostly Louisiana-raisedmusicians came together at the Leo Castelli Gallery on WestBroadway in Soho to perform a wholly improvised concert. Thisensemble's solos spring from collective improvisations and atumultuous backbeat, loosely inspired by the creations ofColtrane, Coleman, Albert Ayler, and their brethren. The de factoleader was Richard "Dickie" Landry, a saxophonist andkeyboardist who joined composer Philip Glass's group in 1969.Landry had become a fixture in downtown New York's loft and artscenes at the close of the 1960s, after he high-tailed it by carfrom Louisiana to the Lower East Side and auspiciouslyencountered Ornette Coleman at the Village Gate the night of hisarrival. For this concert, fellow Glass reedists Jon Smith and Richard Peckjoined in, alongside Rusty Gilder and Robert Prado, both doublingon bass (upright and electric) and trumpet. The drum chair wasoccupied by New Orleans firecracker David Lee, Jr., who broughtalto saxophonist Alan Braufman along for the session (Braufmanwas the only non-Louisiana player in the band). The ensemblestretched out in the gallery for several hours in a configurationreflecting those that took place at Landry's Chinatown loft, documented in photos by artists Tina Girouard and Suzanne Harristhat adorn the inside of the original gatefold album jacket.Recorded live by Glass' sound engineer Kurt Munkacsi, the albumwas released as a double LP on Chatham Square, the small imprintLandry and Glass co-ran, in a stark greyscale cover and simplytitled Solos. The order of the players' improvisations was laid outon the album inner labels, though unsurprising...

- First time reissue, remastered by Stephan Mathieu- New liner notes by Clifford Allen- Download code included- For Fans of Philip Glass, Barre Philips, ECM//4 Cuts Placed In "A First Quarter", the companion piece to Solos,is the sonic result of a collaboration with artist Lawrence Weiner. As Landry remembers, "I was working for Keith Sonnier at CastelliGallery and met Lawrence. He asked `can you make a video forme?' So we did "To and Fro..." At some point he was working on"A First Quarter" (1973) and wanted me to do the music. I said `Ialready have the music.' He said `what do you mean?' I hadrecorded several pieces with Kurt Munkcasi and walked around theset playing the music on a boom box."The set features one solo each by Landry and contrabassist RustyGilder, a duo for the tenor saxophones of Landry and RichardPeck, and an ensemble piece for Landry, Peck, Gilder, trumpeterRobert Prado, and drummer David Lee, Jr. Starting the record offis "Requiem for Some," inspired by Gil Evans' long, placid tones. The anchor is Lee's dry cymbal attack and fancy footwork, dancing around overlapping and recombining horns, chords heldjust shy of splintering. "4th Register" is a grainy delayed solotenor piece, presaging "Kitchen Solos" from Fifteen Saxophones byseveral years. "Piece for So" was, according to Landry, "a chanceto give Rusty a solo". Mostly known as an ensemble bassist,Gilder bounced between Lafayette, Charlotte, and New York, leaving a slim recorded legacy. Here, he stretches out for twelveminutes and change - with keen upper register detail and meatyup-tempo walk, he could have been mentioned in the same breathas players like Dave Holland and Barre Phillips. The closing "DuoVivace" finds Landry and Peck sparring on tenors, the latterholding a melodic line while Landry leans into explosive glossolalia, until both become birds in flight.

Carl Stone continues his late career prolific renaissance with a new album of sculpted, tuneful MAX/MSP fantasias. Stone "plays" his source material the way Terry Riley's In C "plays" an ensemble - with a loose, freewheeling charm connected to the ancient human impulse to make sound, melody, and rhythm from anything. Stone's unique technique simultaneously focuses and sprays sound like a symphony of uncapped fire hydrants. Is this techno, avant-garde, sound art? It's simply (or rather fantastically messily) Carl Stone.

Over The Past Several Years, The Recorded Output Of Carl Stone Has Been Turned On Its Head. In Previous Decades, Stone Perennially Toured New Work But Kept A Harboring Gulf Of Time Between The Live Performances And Their Recorded Release. This Not Only Reflected The Careful Consideration Of The Pieces And Technical Innovations That Went Into The Music But Also The Largely Academic-Minded Audience That Was Themselves Invested In The History And Context Of The Work. The Time Span Of Stone's Recorded Output In Both Sheer Musical Duration And Year Range Was Generously Expansive. Following Multiple Historical Overviews Of Stone's Work On Unseen Worlds And A Re-Connection With A Wider Audience, The Time Between Stone's New Work In Concert And On Record Has Grown Shorter And Shorter Until There Is Now Almost No Distance At All. Stone's Work Has Often At Its Core Explored New Potential Within Popular Cultural Musics, Simultaneously Unspooling And Satisfying A Pop Craving. On Stol En Car, The Forms Of Carl Stone's Pieces Have Also Become More Compact, Making For A Progressive New Stage In Stone's Career Where He Is Not Only Creating Out Of Pop Forms But Challenging Them.Stolen Car Is The Gleeful, Heart Racing Sound Of Hijack, Hotwire, And Escape. Stone Carries The Easy Smirk And Confidence Of A Car Thief Just Out Of The Can, A Magician In A New Town Setting Up A Game Of Balls And Cups. With Each Track He Reaches Under The Steering Wheel And Yanks A Fistful Of Wires. Boom, The Engine Roars To Life, The Car Speeds Off Into The Sunset, The Cups Are Tipped Over, The Balls, Like The Car, Are Gone."These Tracks Were All Made In Late 2019 And 2020, Much Of When I Was In Pandemic Isolation About 5000 Miles From My Home Base Of Tokyo. Adroit jazz guitar, prog rock fantasia, and Japanese environmental music all rest comfortably behind Leo Takami's Next Door. The follow up to the acclaimed Felis Catus & Silence, Next Door nds Takami ruminating on passages_of time, seasons, consciousness. Through music, Leo contemplates daily events and nds beauty in ordinary moments. He also seems to be questioning the value of being stuck in the world, allowing his mind to wander towards something beyond it. His music is earnest, deeply personal and introspective, and is sort of akin to Rousseau's Reveries of the Solitary Walker or Kenji Miyazawa's Night on the Galactic Railroad. On "As If Listening" Takami takes inspiration from a Van Gogh art show organized chronologically, articulating the sense of "enlightened resignation" that is intrinsic in the act of creativity. "Beyond" is a dream of otherworldly nostalgia, a watercolor of past lives. His music is a hazy cinema of memory, the soundtrack to a cherished memory that may have never really happened, but still radiates in the mind like the sun on an unusually warm winter day.
