Paper Tiger’s All Over the Place is a moody record, but also muscular—with strong kick patterns, spare but catchy vocal sampling, and short songs that make their mark then make an exit. Paper manages a nostalgia without sentimentalism, a 90s-style urgency and earnestness. The lead single, “A Different Trish,” features some drum and bass patterns that could score a new Run Lola Run sprint scene; it’s a dark, tightly-wound, electronic universe built and dismantled in 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Paper Tiger has a long list of credits as a hip hop producer, but working solo allows his style room to maneuver; All Over the Place explores everything from slow, drumless ambient compositions to hard, dark dance music. There’s a unifying sensibility, though: the chord progressions lean melancholy, textured timbres feel a little like grainy film, and distinct song sections reveal his pop fluency. For this record Paper set aside some of his digital rig to work with hardware instruments, in part because of what they can’t do. “Creative limitations can generate new ideas quickly for me—also you can’t get email or breaking news on a synthesizer.” The product of Paper’s efforts is a 12-track album with a distinct cinematic quality; All Over the Place is one of those records that turns your life into a movie as soon as you hit play. The tides of synth in your headphones swallow up the din of traffic and strangers’ chatter and the frame rate slows on your walk home. And everything feels infused with some new, deliberate significance: the guy on the corner stuck to his phone becomes a sympathetic everyman, the cityscape is suddenly vivified by all the human stories unspooling in it—you in your headphones among them.

Between outside musical projects, pushing past 50 years old and becoming a father for the first time, San Francisco psych-pop legend Kelley Stoltz has spent the past two years steadily writing and recording his 18th album, “La Fleur”. The dazzling 12 song collection will be released in June by Agitated in Europe/UK and Dandy Boy Records in the USA. “La Fleur'' finds Stoltz once again playing nearly all of the instruments on the album- though a new friendship with pop guru Jason Falkner has led to Falkner appearing on two songs, “Hide In A Song” and “Make Believer” respectively. There’s the requisite 60’s meets 80’s pop rock confections that Stoltz favors with a new focus on out front vocals and perhaps a bit shinier production. Pandemic era blues, politics and fatherhood are lyrical touchstones throughout. The album’s first single “Reni’s Car” is the jangle rock lead single based on an actual event of Kelley riding around Manchester in the Stone Roses drummer's car. The accompanying music video was shot (partially) on location. “About Time” marries Twin Peaks synths to Fleetwood Mac and Avalon era Roxy Music in a cautionary tale to Stoltz's young daughter. “Human Events” puts revolutionary prose to a Moody Blues strum that floats off into Osees territory …and do I hear a nod to Gershwin in there? During the 2010’s Kelley played live as a sideman with Rodriguez and Echo & the Bunnymen, as the 2020’s dawned he was invited to support Pavement on their big reunion tour. He’s also been heard playing drums live with Robyn Hitchcock as well as adding sitar to Hitchcock's last two albums. In 2022, Stoltz was championed with a live appearance on Marc Riley’s Bbc6 show. As producer, he has recorded the new album by Brigid Dawson formerly of the Ohsees. In my ears, Stoltz rarely does any wrong, and these comparisons are only just that little fruit to get you curious- he is still one of a kind. Outsider rock is no longer an invite-only endeavor with DIY touring art pop band Summer Like The Season. Their sophomore record “Aggregator" is a DM to come hang out on discord servers and twitch streams. Opening with the track “Meet Me On The Internet” this anthem is a welcoming call to summon a court of weirdos and misfits. Genre bending across the spectrum of indie rock to hyper pop, the musical musings of Summer Krinsky are an exploration of this cyborg era. As a Lgbtqia female producer, percussionist and singer, Summer fronts the band from a unique perspective in more ways than just physically behind the drum kit.

Summer is an audio engineer and co-owns Atonuv, a recording studio in Detroit with bandmate Scott Murphy. She composes all of the music, playing piano, bass, guitar, drums, erhu, synths, found sounds, singing bowl, banjo, auxiliary percussion, melodica, kazoo and more on this album. Locking themselves in the studio for many months in a marathon of micro-details, Summer and Scott mixed the record to their exacting standards.

The presentation of the band’s first album “Hum” was a polished product from out of thin air, finding fans in person as they toured from town to town. For this new record Summer’s goal was to allow audiences to witness, engage, and participate in a far more intimate manner. Summer live-streamed slices of the composition process, refining tracks such as “Android Hymn” and “Crosstalk” realtime on twitch.

“Aggregator” is an album about nowness, living in the time of technological revolution, at the intersection of optimism and anxiety. These songs are a balance, a flip of a coin, the outcome of which is yet to be determined.

Monster Squad's debut LP Strength Through Pain is back in print for its 20th anniversary! It was a rallying cry to overcome mental illness, abuse at home, government persecution, and all other ways young people are kept down. After Dave’s departure, the band crafted a new version of the song.The bonus flexi included with this re-issue of the LP features the original version of the song for the first time ever, along with “Won’t Conform,” another rare track from the era. The release of this record brought an even more ambitious slate of touring for the band, playing to bigger and bigger audiences, and crossing over to Europe for the first time. Reissues in both North America and Europe over the past 20 years have only solidified its place as the essential starting point for the band’s LP catalog. Pirates Press Records is thrilled to celebrate the long running California punk rock band Monster Squad with an extensive vinyl reissue campaign, starting from the beginning with their debut EP! The 6-song EP Not For Them is truly ground zero for Monster Squad, and a document of the band’s origins. In the summer of 2000, the band members moved in together in a shanty of a punk house with old gravestones strewn about the basement, across the street from their skate spot of choice in Vacaville, CA. These were heady times for young punks at the end of their teenage years. As their reputation as outspoken rabble rousers, grew, so too did the target on their backs, enduring fights with cops, jocks, and rednecks, and even having a Molotov cocktail tossed at their front door by a local neo-Nazi who apparently took issue with the band’s anti-racist and anti-fascist stance! Across six songs, the band members bashed out what could be considered a manifesto for what Monster Squad would be: shout-along choruses, pogo punk positivity, lyrics that stated in no uncertain terms their opposition to the Bush-era war machine & Proposition-8 era institutionalized homophobia. Perhaps most personally, the song “Pressure” featured an honest & relatable discussion of mental health issues that would become a recurring theme in the ensuing decades. Originally self-released via CD-Rs burned on the clock at Guitar Center on the band’s own Strength Through Pain Records, Monster Squad’s Not For Them is on vinyl for the first time ever! "Sketchbook," JP's latest endeavor, serves as a sonic documentation of his beat-making journey. The record is being released on limited Yellow cassette and a very limited Square Double 7-inch Lathe cut version that not only has 2 extra songs but also features collaborations with legends Lil Jaz (dmc champion) and Joshua Winstead (Metric), adding depth to the release and embodying some of our favorite moments. Inspired by a dynamic roster of artists like Yussef Dayes, Harold Budd, and Hiroshi Yoshimura and visual artists like Mercedes Helnwein, Tim Hawkinson, and Joe Matt. Since his record debut in 1997, Vidar Busk has distinguished himself as one of Norways leading guitarists, and is known as an important driving force in the spread of blues music in his home country. Busk traveled to the United States early on to play in the band of the American blues artist Rock Bottom, and later returned home to start building his own solo career. Rolling Stone hailed the band’s “hazy, psychedelic Americana,” while NPR praised their “explosive live performances and infectious roots-rock swagger.” Dates with Fleet Foxes, Wilco, and Dawes followed, as did festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, and Coachella, among others. The band would go on to release six more similarly lauded studio albums, culminating with 2020’s Holy Smokes Future Jokes, which Mojo proclaimed “sound[s] like the Beatles at Big Pink.”

This is a 7-inch single featuring Japanese cover of "Travessia," a representative song from the early career of Brazilian singer Milton Nascimento, taken from the 2003 album "Houraigyou" by the master of Yaeyama folk songs, Tetsuhiro Daiku. On the B-side, it includes a cover of the famous Hawaiian song "Japanese Rumba," known for being covered by Haruomi Hosono in his album called 'Paraiso.' Both tracks feature backing by The Pascals, led by Rocket Matsushita, creating a cross-cultural folkloric fusion by blending various elements of Okinawan folk songs. Following their critically acclaimed 2019 debut album Unfurl, Hidden Notes Records are happy to announce the release of the multi-award-nominated experimental/contemporary folk string duo Fran & Flora’s sophomore full-length album, Precious Collection. Released on Friday 12th April 2024, this album, produced by the duo themselves, explodes in myriad directions expressing the richness of the long-standing collaboration between Francesca Ter-Berg (cello/vocals/electronics) and Flora Curzon (violin/vocals/electronics). With Klezmer and Yiddish song as the predominant inspiration for the record, Precious Collection defies convention, featuring self-penned tunes and unique arrangements pushing their ground-breaking project beyond their virtuosic string playing. Drummers Ursula Russell (Snapped Ankles, Alabaster DePlume) and Simon Roth (Chris Potter, Alice Zawadzki, Adrian Dunbar) feature on the record on full kit and Ukrainian Poik (marching drum) respectively, and Francesca and Flora experiment with bowed cymbals, extended piano techniques, and samples of found sounds.The album was recorded in three different locations - Total Refreshment Centre (London), Big Jelly Studios (Ramsgate) and Great North Sound Society (Maine, Usa). The music of Fran & Flora sits in two camps, both steeped in tradition, with material drawn directly from archival recordings, recovered manuscripts and years of study with traditional music masters, whilst simultaneously garnering a contemporary and avant-garde aesthetic, speaking to the more classical and experimental listener. Fran & Flora inject their source material with drones, loops, free improvisation and electronics to create a ‘border-defying’ (Mojo) sound. Their influences range across a wide spectrum of artists and composers from Silver Mt.Zion to Rhiannon Giddens, Lankum, Brìghde Chaimbeul, Colin Stetson, Adrienne Lenker, Shabaka Hutchings and Mica Levi. As string players Fran & Flora’s collaborations together and separately includes performing with the likes of Tom Skinner, Portico Quartet, Imogen Heap, Riz Ahmed, Sam Lee, Talvin Singh, Jocelyn Pook, Hannah Peel and The Vernon Spring. Within the global Klezmer community they have worked with Zoe Aqua, London Klezmer Quartet, Sashe Lurje, Craig Judelman, Merlin & Polina Shepherd and Frank London, and have taught at Klezmer music camps including at Klezfest London, contributing to ongoing research and revival work.

Witherfall was formed in Los Angeles in 2013. Joseph Michael (also of Sanctuary fame) and Jake Dreyer (ex-Iced Earth/Demons & Wizards) built their new band around drummer Adam Sagan (rip) and accomplished bassist Anthony Crawford (Allan Holdsworth, Chon). ‘San Vito’ is the new album from the Ivor Novello award-winning & multi-platinum selling UK indie-pop band The Feeling.

The album was written and recorded in Southern Italy and saw the band decamp there to self-produce the record as a band together. What began as a short writing trip, turned into a full album project with the Italian sun, food and culture seeping through into the sounds on the record. As she's gotten older, Ella Smoker has found that her subconscious has been trying to tell her "some pretty wacky stuff". Thoughts will come to the 21-year-old singer-songwriter in dreams, or as she writes lyrics in studio sessions, words floating onto the page before she's really had a moment to realise what they are. "As soon as we start making the music, my brain sort of turns off," she explains. "I'll be sitting there, writing all this stuff that feels like a load of nonsense, and a month later, I'll look back and be like `oh'. It all comes from a place I didn't even realise was there." In learning how to open up to herself, gglum ended up finding a kindred spirit in producer Karma Kid (Maisie Peters, Shygirl, Connie Constance), pushing past her natural bedroom-pop introversion to find joy in the process of collaboration. Whether it's the ragged radio-rock of `SPLAT!' ("basically about realising that somebody you held up very highly is actually just a massive shambles of a person") or the riotous, industrial energy of `Easy Fun', Smoker is able to reshape her vocal around the mood, creating a record which expertly balances light and shade. "I've never really done anything in like that vocal style before," she says of `Easy Fun's near-spoken delivery. "I love that song because it's not something I would have come up with on my own, but Karma Kid was great at pushing me out of my comfort zone. I just thought like, look: I can be a little silly with this." The release of `The Garden Dream' will offer gglum plenty more opportunity to get both silly and serious, to be bold in her exploration of new ideas and sounds But it will also offer the opportunity to further accept herself as the dreamlike artist she always wanted to be; confidently embellishing acoustic worlds that her listeners can burrow safely within. "I feel like I naturally gravitate towards wanting to make musical spaces that you can feel like you're living in, rather than trying to make songs", she says. "That's something I really wanted to solidify with this album: I basically want to make music that feels like when you're looking out the window and it's the end of the film and you're imagining what comes next. That's the sound of what I want to be doing."

There weren't a lot of rockabilly bands from Norway in 1993, and Hot Rod Torgeir & His Rock-A-Hulas were rather exotic when they appeared as unknown freshmen on the Oslo stage with washboards on fire, two drummers, skeleton masks and fireworks from the edge of stage. After some line up changes they went on to record the album "Cruisin'". The songs were mostly originals, with classic rockabilly themes such as cars, girls, card games, sex and goats. Two bonus tracks have been added to this vinyl reissue including a cover version of "I feel fine" by The Beatles.

Dreamy and complex, Sun Ark founder and songwriter Johannes Mann describes their self-titled debut album (Berlin’s Xjazz Music, February 2024) as ‘exploring a landscape’; a sonic story with a bright, springy opening track that bends into a red-hot, experimental arc. In Sun Ark’s performances, the band’s beat-driven grooves drift from produced compositions penned by Mann into skillful ambient and collaborative improvisations, creating a sound that is effervescent and entirely unique. Two of the band’s in-studio improvisations are excerpted in Sun Ark: fragile, droning ‘Photon’ and delicate ‘Fear’ both stem from the same 25-minute improv, and are sampled at opposite ends of the album. From Sun Ark’s light, breezy opening track ‘Sun’ to a lush, groovy ‘Arden’ sunset,this exploratory and masterful debut album paints a strange other world, which drip from the trippy and psychedelic to the dark, droning and angular. Listeners tumble into Sun Ark’s shimmery, fluid moods, which reach a crescendo at the album’s midway point, ‘Moon.sun’, a rich, ambient inverse of the album’s opening track, featuring a vocal sample from Charles Mingus’s ‘Eclipse’. Composer Mann and his band of skillful improvisers eschew categorization, leading the listener boldly from contemporary jazz to avant-garde and experimental (‘Ai Ai’ and ‘ArkOne’), lo-fi and guitar-forward (‘Shuggie’) and daydreamy melodies in acoustic Instrumentation (‘Crepuscule’). Sun Ark bridges the gap between electronically-produced music and acoustic jazz ensemble playing, with tracks that highlight the skilled musicianship of each of the band’s players. Melancholy, hungover-feeling ‘Walk’ highlights a stand-out bass solo from Thorbjörn Stefansson (on double bass), while Bene Jäckle (flute) provides sparkly, sunny intros and outros to ‘Arden’ and ‘Onfym’. ‘ArkOne’ and ‘Crepuscule’ feature confident performances from Povel Widestrand, playing on the Fender Rhodes and grand piano, and guitarist and composer Mann leans into an ‘80s synth sound in ‘Shuggie’ utilizing a Casio Midi-Guitar. In SUN ARK they join forces to improvise and experiment collectively to create a current Sound that aims to have a profound spiritual and emotional Impact. Sun Ark was recorded by Piotr Zegzula at RecPublica Studios in Lubza, Poland and Mixed & Mastered by Martin Ruch at Control Room Berlin. Additional Overdubs and Postproduction were done by Johannes Mann in his Studio in Berlin-Neukölln. The album’s retro futuristic artwork and visualizers are by Ben Luu, with trippy, mind bending videography by Ada Grueter for “Moon.Sun”.

Jlin’s detailed and meticulous exploration of rhythm’s inner and outer reaches has made her one of the most distinctive and recognisable voices within both the electronic and classical music worlds. Her compositions are consistently appealing and have an accessibility to them, yet often defy expectations. She exists within her own locus solus - no matter the collaborator, no matter where sounds ultimately lead her. Whatever the situation – from composing the Pulitzer Prize shortlisted ‘Perspective’ for Third Coast Percussion, to ‘Godmother’ her AI-powered collaboration with Holly Herndon, Jlin always expresses her outlook to the fullest. Her new album ‘Akoma’ sets a new benchmark in her personal road map, not only since the album features guest appearances from Björk, Philip Glass and Kronos Quartet but for her continued sonic persistence and resistance. Jlin does what Jlin does and it’s beloved across genres, across scenes and across generations. ‘Akoma’ is a new entry point into her sound and a new approach for both those who have been following diligently and those who are just now entering her world.So how did she get here? Here’s a rundown for those looking for the facts. She was both a math nerd and a steel factory worker. She got inspired by Footwork and started making tracks with mentorship assistance from RP Boo and DJ Rashad, but her music was far from typical for footwork from the get-go. In 2011, she released her first track ‘Erotic Heat’ on the Planet Mu anthology ‘Bangs & Works Vol.2.’ Fashion designer Rick Owens heard it and invited her to soundtrack his Paris Fashion Week show. Already before an EP or an album Jlin was in new cutting-edge territory. And it hasn’t stopped since. Everyday Jlin wakes up early and clocks into her home studio working hard on new music. Her discipline and craft-like approach means that those who would try to copy her sound simply can’t get to the level she is at. Since ‘Erotic Heat’ she has released two bold albums, 2015’s ‘Dark Energy’ and 2017’s ‘Black Origami.’ She has also released her soundtrack to Company Wayne McGregor’s dance piece ‘Autobiography’ (2018) and most recently (2023) the mini-album ‘Perspective.’ She’s remixed µ-Ziq, Factory Floor, Ben Frost, Max Richter, Björk, Martin Gore and others. She’s collaborated with Holly Herndon and the late Sophie. She’s worked with visual artists Kevin Beasley and Nick Cave. She composed a string quartet for Kronos Quartet and performed with them live in a tribute to Philip Glass. She also recently completed a tribute to Sun Ra with Kronos. ‘Perspective’, her very well received percussion work for Third Coast Percussion has further opened doors for her in classical music. She’s even thinking of one day writing an opera. She had a residency at MassMoca Museum earlier this year (2023). She’s performed live at Pitchfork Festival, Unsound Festival and too many others to mention. She’s also worked with Indian dancers, Company Wayne McGregor and renowned choreographer/MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham. There’s more but you get the picture - she’s working in contexts and in ways that few of her peers are able to. ‘Akoma’ is the next step - all these paths have led to this. The norwegian group Boastein was founded by Are Storstein and Øistein Boassen in 1970. Boastein's debut album "Jeg har min egen luke" became something of a holy grail within alternative music in Norway. This is DIY rock from the anarchist basement with a sound and lyrics that was quite groundbraking when it came out. It was also one of the very first independent releases in Norway. The album can be described as free and progressive underground rock filled with dark humor, political sting and a good amount of weirdness. The record was first released in 399 copies in 1977.

When the band broke up, Arvid continued as a solo artist, and recorded the album "Statement" in 1990.
