We are honoured to have none other than Jamal Sul better known as Moving Still as the first artist to bless us with two ‘90s Kuwaiti edits on a 12” EP release, the first of the ‘Yallah Ya Ashab’ (Let’s Go Friends) series. The release is in collaboration with Kuwaiti cassette label Al Nazaer who have had a major impact on music from the Gulf region since the ‘80s. Moving Still follows on from his infectious disco floor-filler Sidi Mansour (Moving Still Edit), which took the festival circuit by storm, and his italo-esque edit of Egyptian pop star Azza Kamal’s Maadna Bkra in collaboration with Dutch producer Tjade. Both edits reached #1 in Rush Hour’s best-sellers chart and were played out across the world with support from Palms Trax, Hunee, Skatebård, David Vunk, CC:DISCO!, Esa Williams and Nabihah Iqbal. He recently came full circle with a beautiful 6 track EP Kalam Hub on close supporter Palms Trax’s label Cwpt. For the A side, Moving Still & Disco Arabesquo have combined forces to flip Omrena, a 1998 track from Kuwaiti singer and actor Bashar Ali Sultan, best known for his playful song El Galb El Mehtas. Omrena (‘our lifetime’) is a tale of longing to that time spent with our loved ones and the desire to unite with that lost love. The edit is brought to life with Moving Still’s signature arpeggiated bassline and drums, and masterfully arranged by Disco Arabesquo. The result is a percussive club banger, adding a sense of urgency to the yearning of the original. The B side Nerjaa (‘we return’) is a mystery of a one hit wonder by the obscure band Firkit el Lotus (the Lotus band). Recorded in 1994 in Kuwait, written by Sultan Johar and produced by Meshal Jumah, there are no further details on the band’s members or how long they were together. The original track was a Moving Still find from a Kuwaiti mahragan (festival) compilation, sharing it with Disco Arabesquo during their first in-person meeting in Amsterdam in 2019. The Arabic new-jack swing track has been a quiet obsession of the two ever since. This stripped back edit transforms the original with a refuelled and recreated 808 drum and sub-heavy bass, with crooning vocals to have you fall in love while dancing in the club.

Locked down and furloughed, Vitalic went back to his synths and beatboxes, resulting in his fifth album "Dissidaence " - the title of which is a whole story in itself - destined to be released in two volumes. He describes it as a return to the roots of his sonic identity, a kind of reinterpretation of the rock energy of his early albums. "More than anything, it was a question of timing. While composing I realised that eight tracks felt like too little for an album, and sixteen was really over the top, so I decided to cut the whole thing in half! The main reason though is that I felt I hadn't been able to express everything I wanted to on the first volume - like something had been left unfinished." The two episodes of "Dissidaence " - navigating between pop and hardcore, sweat and tenderness, melancholia and anger - are a sort of boiling down of what the artist knows how to do best, after twenty years of creating, from filthy whirlwinds that make your mind explode on the dancefloor to bubble gum pop songs about love that transport us elsewhere. On these two volumes of "Dissidaence " that now form one, the powerful beats and galloping sequencers translate the social and political anger of the global pandemic, and Vitalic looks into the past, channelling his love for off-kilter synth sounds, skew-whiff pads, heady refrains, distorted vocals and heavy beats. Above all, this dancefloor marathon expresses his obsessional passion for dance music and the primal need to dance. "Dissidaence " should be taken as both a celebration of celebration and a journey back in time to an era that maybe does not exist right now, but which will - and this album is the dazzling proof - be reborn from its ashes to burn bright once more, its BPM let loose and rage still blazing, because more than ever, to dance is to live.

Since 2019 the collective of Parisian partygoers, Pardonnez-Nous, have decided to launch their own label. Just like their parties, their goal is to shine a light on dancing music.
Constantly looking for new tracks to enlighten the dancefloors, their outings are in line with the vision of deejaying defended by its founders. Finding forgotten pieces that are the geneses of dance music and mixing them with more contemporary sounds. Re-editions, edits, remixes or original productions the label doesn’t just stick to one style but aspires to represent all the music of partying!
Mexico, Peru, Surinam, and of course Sweden: in 1986, musicians from around the world responded to the Swedish composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Torbjörn Langborn’s invitation. His idea was to bring together the two groups he played with: a jazz quintet, and his salsa ensemble.
The cocktail was explosive: after several days recording at the Humlan studio in Stockholm, Torbjörn Langborn & the Feel Life Orchestra produced an eponymous album, combining, in Langborn’s words, “disco and funk with congas and Batá percussions.” The B side was a three-part gem nearly seven minutes long titled “Feel Life”, where he gives free rein to his talent as a jazz pianist. Thirty years later, we asked the famous remixer Dimitri from Paris to express is talent to produce a new version of this classic music track. "Pardonnez-nous", here it is.

"Byrd’s Eye View" is the first of three reissues from the Transition catalogue that will be released as part of the Tone Poet series in 2023, presented in a single sleeve with a booklet.

Dom Maker and Kai Campos have always known how to masterfully synthesise their talents into one singular yet ever changing vision. Since beginning in 2009, their work has morphed from their distinctly British sound of dubstep and techno to the boundaryless and densely packed collaborations of Love What Survives. Five years after that scintillating record, the two take their talents as Mount Kimbie to new extremes by splitting them in half entirely.

Having walked separate paths musically and physically in the world over the years since Love What Survives, Dom and Kai took a literal approach to their latest record, separating it into two distinct, independently produced albums - but linked through shared senses of sonic haziness and melody. Die Cuts shows Dom Maker at a collaborative peak, interspersing vocal cuts, samples, and urban sounds in swiftly stitched vignettes with a slowed down, lo-fi flair. Meanwhile, the chugging beats of City Planning mimic train tracks, as Kai Campos’ album contains rhythmic paintings of urbanity with detailed sonic architecture. These two sides of Mount Kimbie are as different as day and night, yet they inform each other greatly, speaking a simultaneous message from separate locations.

The opening track ‘dvd’ on Die Cuts features a mystical siren song fading in, before slowthai and Danny Brown’s expressive vocals cut through on ‘in your eyes’, trading bittersweet and apoplectic verses. An eerie alarm echoes on ‘heat on, lips on', subsiding with punchy beat and skittering keys, and a scathing, mercurial spoken word spiralling to jazzy loops depicting intimate struggles. City Planning in similar fashion shifts from tense, burrowing bass rumbles to fluttering synth droplets forming rivers of sound. The molten underground beat of ‘Transit Map (Flattened)’ lurches and groans, with piano notes sprawling like the many-coloured intersecting lines of a subway map.

Even when split in two, Mount Kimbie provide yet another total upheaval of their sound, combining their individual strengths for a roaringly creative album on MK 3.5.

Hudson Mohawke makes a powerful statement by pairing together both the sacred and the profane. Cry Sugar is a portrait of our time, as well as the state of club music in 2022, in that the truest art is that without boundaries. That said, when you put everything aside, what you’re ultimately left with is yet another LP full of titanic productions. Which may be its biggest most salient point of all.

Recorded in his adopted home of Los Angeles, Cry Sugar continues Hudson Mohawke’s recent mission to create aspirational music from the tools of the club, but with an even keener eye towards optimism and sustainability. Cry Sugar also includes even more of Hudson Mohawke’s push-pull between high and low culture: allusions to Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and John Williams rub up against the huge swinging bass of the “trap music” he (deliberately or not) helped codify on his earlier records. That battle of motivation is also played out thematically within the songs themselves. Tracks like ‘Stump’, ‘Expo’, and ‘Some Buzz’ nod towards environmental disaster while ‘3 Sheets To The Wind’ revels in debauchery. Who’s to say which mode is more important to focus on.

Hudson Mohawke is prioritising health. He’s still out at 7AM with the ravers mind you, but he’s grilling food next door to the club to hand out to exhausted punters as they emerge into the sunlight following an all-nighter. True story or not, he had made a habit of a different kind of early morning session by giving back to the dancers, the nightlife warriors, the people who make dance music culture so enveloping. That spirit of revestment and of paying tribute to the lifers is reflected throughout his new LP Cry Sugar.

It was recorded in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the summer of 2020, on a stage built on a hill nestled within a 72-acre ranch. In January 2020, Moses Sumney and band gathered in Western North Carolina to design festival-ready versions of songs from Aromanticism and græ. After the world shut down and tour was canceled, Moses maintained a desire to share the show, but in a new way. Not just a live stream or recording. A film. A concert film. So in the summer of 2020, the band re-convened in Asheville, and designed the show for Live From Blackalachia. An impressive live album by Marvin Peterson who was one of the finest trumpetersin the 60's-70's is making its return on vinyl format. These tracks were performed by the band led by Hannibal Marvin Peterson, though he had yet to add "Hannibal" to his name at the time of recording. Here, he performed with eight musicians in his hometown of Texas, and theirperformance crossed the boundaries of jazz, soul and funk with skilled musicians. These included organistEugene Carrier who also participated in the BB King Band and drummer Emry Thomas who would later participate in the band led by Johnny "Guitar" Watson.

With a glance at the cover art, you can get a sense of the powerful and passionate live recording that brought joy to its many fans. The opening "Groove for Otis" (m1) with a jazz-funk whose edgy beat excites rare groove fans. "Our Groove" (m4) is also a fine track whichhas a slick bassline and Eugene'sorgan fusing in harmony. P-vine are very proud to be repressing this record with its intimate feeling akin to being there in the crowd as the mighty Peterson walks up to take center stage.

Jaga Jazzist have gone back to basics on their new LP Pyramid … well, as back to basics as an eight-piece instrumental prog-jazz ensemble can go. Eschewing the studio tinkering which characterised their previous LP Starfire (2015), Jaga Jazzist wrote and recorded the four lengthy opuses of Pyramid in a fortnight. This approach has helped them to make a more immediate and driven record, one that combines their typical sonic adventurousness with some of the most potent grooves of any Jaga Jazzist LP.

The spontaneous approach to writing is most apparent in the work of Pyramid’s rhythm section. ‘The Shrine’ is named after Fela Kuti’s legendary venue in Lagos, and the track certainly lives up to this association with some limber, Tony Allen-inspired drumming. ‘Apex’ has a cosmic disco flavour which channels Jaga Jazzist’s former remixer Todd Terje, ‘Spiral Era’s nimble lilt combines both half- and double-time, and there is an urgent stomp which underpins the second half of epic opener ‘Tomita’.

Atop these polyrhythms, the other members of Jaga Jazzist show themselves once more to be instrumentalists of the highest order. There is certainly plenty of Kuti’s legendary Africa 70 to the aforementioned ‘The Shrine’, but this track is also played with the panache and thrust of fellow post-jazz crews The Comet Is Coming and The Physics House Band. One also detects the influences of both library music, space rock and Plaid on ‘Spiral Era’ and ‘Tomita’, tracks which also balance technical pizzazz with the deft compositions of bandleader Lars Horntveth.

Norwegians Jaga Jazzist channel post-rock, jazz, prog, disco, Afrobeat and many other styles to paint new sonic landscapes on their latest full-length Pyramid.

The culmination of three years work between Mica and Eliza - winner of the 2013 British Contemporary Piano Competition - ‘Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall’ follows up their collaboration on the Oscar-nominated score for Pablo Larrain’s ‘Jackie’ score with a finer-shaded, patient space for low-lit, smoky expression that’s so intimate and personal it almost feels like eavesdropping a private recording.

The two sides of 1973’s Big Business / Wind of Change are mainly the work of the great Keith Mansfield but there’s a killer cameo each from Alan Hawkshaw and David Snell to help deliver “a thematic suite, diverse in mood, applicable to dramatic and environmental situations”. A Be With favourite and truly one for the heads.

The Big Business of side A is all the work of Keith Mansfield. It’s heavy on the suspense and features the vital “Hot Property”, an insistent groove so good that Madlib sampled it to lace the ace “Long Awaited” by Lootpack with Dilated Peoples.

“Sleeping Giant 1” is a more fleshed out version of the equally-dazzling “Fatal Error”, evoking the orchestral magic of David Axelrod. Indeed, it conjures images of Diamond D falling over himself in the early-to-mid 90s to loop its intoxicatingly eerie soundscape. Complete with guitar fills that recall Paris, Texas-era Ry Cooder, you need this record for this piece alone.

The horn-and-flute-led "Tycoon" is a head-nodder and "Power Complex" has some fantastic percussion. Other highlights include the breezy glide of “Whistle Stop Tour” and its sister groove “Clean Air.”

Over on Side B is the more expansive Wind Of Change, which includes the David Snell and the Alan Hawkshaw contributions. But these ain’t no filler. Snell’s shuffling “International Flight” sounds like a smooth Dorothy Ashby track tossed from the heavens. Hawkshaw’s “Road And Rail” is about as luxurious and strung-out as the great man gets and it might just be the highlight of this whole set.

Not to be outdone, if Mansfield’s “Balance Of Power” doesn’t make you feel like king of the world then you must be playing it wrong. Oh, and did we mention “World In Action”?!

As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Big Business / Wind of Change comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity.

Following the release of “Joined Ends” in 2014 – a deeply intimate and textured project he describes as his “chamber music” record – Dorian Concept performed everywhere from Glastonbury to Sonar to MoMA PS1’s Warm Up and then deliberately took himself off the radar. The time since has been spent meticulously un-learning his prodigious production process and developing a brand new sound that even the most clued-up won’t be expecting – showcased on ‘Promises’, in the most prominent use of his voice to date. The recording and processing of his vocals represent not only a more human expression of his highly technical sound, but also an inclination toward recursion – the challenge, ephemerality, and demand for attention of “unequal repetition” which shapes the build and deconstruction of energy throughout the record.

Taking inspiration from multi-generational eclecticism (‘60s jazz, ‘70s fusion, ‘80s neo prog-rock, ‘90s electronica), Dorian Concept sought to replicate “modern” music elements with old-fashioned methods, live-playing and hand-recording deceptively digital sounds in service of a tongue-in-cheek “parody of nostalgia”. Having produced the record largely in the years 2016 and 2017 – widely characterized as periods of a cultural reckoning throughout the democratic world – he ambitiously took timely themes of cumulative error, shortening attention spans and subjective experience and transposed them into his making. As is to be expected from him by now, for all the considered, high-concept musing, the result is refreshingly unpretentious: dizzying swells, cacophonous breakdowns and formidable rhythms are both expert and childlike, hyperactive and hyper-focused.

Born Oliver Thomas Johnson, the self-taught keyboardist and producer should be no stranger to those in the Brainfeeder orbit. He first caught the attention of the crew in its infancy, when head honcho Flying Lotus discovered Dorian Concept’s MySpace profile and swiftly included a remix in his lauded debut Essential Mix (2008). Dorian Concept went on to tour with FlyLo’s live band, appeared at some of Brainfeeder’s earliest international label nights in 2009 (Off-Sonar in Barcelona and the infamous Hearn Street Car Park session in London), and released a string of celebrated EPs and albums for Kindred Spirits imprint Nod Navigators, Affine and Ninja Tune – as well as remixing Taylor McFerrin, contributing production to Thundercat’s “The Golden Age of Apocalypse” and playing keys on Flying Lotus’ seminal “Cosmogramma”.
