Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of Consciousness’ gets a respectful touch-up 25 years on courtesy of
the Adana Twins.
The German duo come strong with a pair of remixes, fit for two very different dancefloor scenarios. The
first a smart, stripped back breakbeat version that switches from a sparse percussive soundscape to the
famous acid warbles, before introducing undulating retro trance synths to the composition for a headmelting finish. Remix Two is a driving, four-to-the-floor, rave-focused affair that builds up the 303s with
exhilarating intensity, only letting up in the final moments of the track.
The fresh interpretation follows on from Adana Twins’ super re-work of Patrice Baumel’s ‘Roar’ that
dropped on Watergate last November and reinforces the duo’s golden touch on the remix front

Kiko & Popof link for a high-impact debut on Watergate. The talented French artists both have a discography that goes back to the ‘90s. Kiko a veteran of 500+ releases, highlighted by his 1998 cut ‘World Cup’ that was continued a minor techno classic at the time. He’s gone through many sonic incarnations since then and is currently turning heads with superb production on labels including Diynamic and Afterlife. Popof, meanwhile, is a genre flexitarian, just as adept at releasing on Cocoon and Truesoul as he is Hot Creations, and now of course – Watergate Records. ‘Night Sky’ is a big, bright dancefloor pummeller, made for peak-time moments and driven by a stirring chord sequence. ‘Love Triangle’ is a shimmering nu disco beauty, propelled by a sharp tech underbelly. Fresh from her much-loved ‘Raver Girl’ EP, Yulia Niko contributes a slick re-rub of the title track, retaining the original’s glistening melodic lead, while giving it a punchier bottom end. Rounding out the package strongly, rising UK duo Mia Mendi give ‘Love Triangle’ the remix touch, re-fashioning it into a sublime breakbeat gem made for early morning on the Waterfloor.

Belgian techno don Marco Bailey lands on Watergate with a debut that’s guaranteed to intrigue as he leans into electro territory, grabbing rerubs from Extrawelt & Biesmans while he’s at it. DJ, producer and label chief, his is a storied career that spans three decades, and it’s long been evident that Marco’s enthusiasm and passion remains resolute. He closed 2021 with the release of his sixth studio album Surreal Stage, an ambitious, introspective body of work that dropped via his booming imprint Materia. His own label aside, his discography is stacked with cuts across eminent labels Second State, Arts, Bedrock Records, as well as being one of the first artists to debut on Carl Cox’s seminal Intec. While it’s techno that he’s become firmly associated with, his adeptness in the studio isn’t limited to the nuances of one genre and this is a rare opportunity to showcase a different side to his musicality. ‘The Spirit’ floods in first, almost immediately engaging listeners as it ebbs and flows with complete abandon. If the promise of electro grabbed your attention, it’s ‘From My Mind’ that delivers and sticks in your mind - from the heavy synth bassline to the soaring ascendant melody, and distorted, robotic vocals. ‘Pulse’ slaps and packs plenty of punch power as it snakes its way through with dominating, ascendant chords. Rising UK duo Mia Mendi returns for their second outing on Watergate Records with the retro-tinged Robosynapse EP. The label debut of Mia Mendi was a notable 2021 highlight for the Oberbaumbrücke imprint. Titled 'Ubi’, the EP was a collaboration with Thomas Gandey and demonstrated their full-bodied dancefloor approach, injecting their unique sound signature into a modern progressive house palette. ‘Robosynapse’ is no less exciting (or fun). The title track is a plump nu wave houser, driven by soaring retro synths, a gutsy electro bassline and an 80s guitar solo. ‘Simulated Reality’ buzzes and hums, seven minutes of emotional electro and crispy drumlines, before handing the baton to ‘Cyborg String’, which continues the dreamy throwdown. Alan Dixon makes his first contribution to Watergate Records and re-fashions ‘Robosynapse’ into a glistening cosmic-tinged beast, amplifying the focus on the guitar lead. Fresh off her label debut with the excellent ‘Mind Control’ EP, Henri Bergmann makes a welcome return to re-work ‘Simulated Reality’ into a powerful melodic gem, heightening the focus on the synths. An added bonus to the pack, Musumeci delivers a supreme chugging re-work of ‘Ubi’. Game on!

Since kicking off their production partnership during lockdown last year, UK duo Mia Mendi and musical polymath Thomas Gandey (aka Cagedbaby) have enjoyed a fruitful link up; a Beatport no.1 with ‘Cultum’ released on Mia Mendi’s new imprint hydera, a stunning cut on Stil Vor Talent’s Schneeweiß compilation followed by an impressive debut EP on Los Suruba’s Nazca Records titled ‘Paracas’. Now they’ve stepped up for a maiden label offering on Watergate. ‘Ubi’ is a trio of aces that reinforces why this musical union is turning all the right heads. The title track is seductive and punchy, driven by a snaking groove and an intriguing top-line melody, complimented by Gandey’s on-point vocals. ‘ Gatekeeper’ brings atmosphere in spades as an underbelly of acid and crisp rolling beats keep tempo, before the forest clears and Gandey’s yearning vox comes into focus as luscious pads swirl in the mist. ‘ Nightliner’ is the sexy closer and distinctly ‘80s in spirit, as racey synths and a plump bottom end dominate the show.

Matthias Meyer and Ryan Davis make sweet music together, like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie once made babes. Tunes that melt you into the floor and roll dancefloors from Tulum to Tblisi. Their debut collaboration ‚Hope‘ was a dawning highlight of 2017 and Beatport Deep House no.1, while ‚Love Letters from Sicily‘, was a lustrous late summer anthem, reinforcing their knack for the sublime. Their latest opus ‚Crying Juno / Cafuné‘ begins where its predecessors left off, taking life after Matthias and Ryan exchanged ideas back and forth over a period of months before finally settling in the former’s Holzmarkt studio in Berlin to finish giving the tracks their form.
