Kelela collaborator Florian TM Zeisig and sound engineer Jordan Juras (aka Pvas) set us adrift in the Bavarian wilderness, red-eyed and zonked, with a buoyant raft of blissed ambient sorcery on their new album for Huerco S.’ West Mineral Ltd. Gorgeous, uplifting gear, tipped if yr into David Moufang’s Studio Pankow and Reagenz collabs, early William Orbit, 154, GAS.

Successor to their Mo Wax flavoured debut album ‘Napping Under God’ (3xl, 2022), the languorous wooze of ‘BonGBoaT’ derives from a week the duo shared soaking up nature in and around a small Bavarian village, where days were spent hiking, boating, and recording flutes in caves - that sort of thing.

The music follows to metaphorically represent that atmosphere on a spiritual, rather than literal, level. Zeisig’s acclaimed feel for lushly variegated texture has already been well documented on these pages, and that space is here beautifully accentuated by the technical suss of Juras, between them bestowing a carefully plotted calmness and soothing conception of environmental ambient for discerning listeners.

The cotton-weft bleep dub of ‘Row’ pushes us off into scenes of lonesome folk strings heard over bobbin waves in ‘Kneippen’, and ‘Mud’ highlights their knack for projecting prismatic fantasies with its 3D swill of murky textures and glittering harp. ’Sky’ clearly recalls Wolfgang Voigt’s somnambulant waft around the Black Forest as GAS, and ‘Heat’ inverts jungle breaks, train horns and smoke puffs as heard from the sea bed. They reserve a voluminous burst of shoegaze bliss for the smudged finale ‘Drift’, lilting into the evocative dread of ‘Night’, calling lights out for listeners probably already firmly slanted to the horizontal.

Not overly sentimental or nostalgic, 'BonGBoaT' is a humid, after-hours descent into waterlogged bliss that takes elements from the dub-ambient canon and floats them into prismatic abstraction, providing much needed succour for the world weary. In other words, all of us.

West Mineral return with a followup to Mister Water Wet’s 2019’s subtropical ambient slow-burn debut ‘Bought the Farm’, expanding Iggy Romeu’s horizons to contrast feverish Afro-Caribbean ambient jazz with jaunty illbient and atmospheric freakouts. Low-lit heat that’s highly recommended if yr into Nick León, Carlos Niño, Kelman Duran, Gonçalo F. Cardoso. Mister Water Wet continues to excavate the tropical soundscapes that simmer the producer’s Kansas City home with his Puerto Rican roots, on a new album of extended vignettes and mood pieces that cross a late 90’s Mo Wax instrumentals vibe with present day feelings of displacement and ennui. LP opener ‘Bory’ tunes us into Water Wet’s weirdly fuzzed frequencies, where tremeloed strings and found sounds resemble what might have been a lost dean blunt x dean hurley sound design concept for Inland Empire, while ‘I Saw the Green Flash’ opens a swirl of strings and traditional rhythms caught in a reflecting pool of canned classical orchestrals and 1950s theremin wails. ‘Good Apple’, meanwhile, cranks up the mood with aged x looped piano paired with an undulating, bass-heavy shuffle that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Kelman Duran x Martin Denny mixtape. ‘When Kennybrook Burned to the Ground’ leans into heady jazz vapours, spreading crackle over pitch-fucked horn samples, but it’s the producer’s weird use of percussion that keeps us gripped: scattering his arrangements across the grid, mimicking an ensemble of players deployed in irregular formations. Romeu embraces trip-hop on ‘Any Other Time’, blending Afro-Caribbean percussion with a swung downtempo beat, while ‘Isthmus’ reminds us of the clatterbox plunder of Moonshake’s PJ Harvey hookup ‘Just a Working Girl’ - with all its asymmetric hooks. The extended closing track ‘Losing Blood’ takes a leaf out of Fennesz’s glitched rulebook, stretching and folding disintegrating loops through an 11 minute descent into the elegiac aether.

Over a year since we last heard from them, Huerco S’ West Mineral imprint shimmers into view for their first release of 2021 - a lush, jittery high of aerosolised ambient thizz and top shelf electroid steppers from Ben Bondy, highly recommended if yr into Perila, Jan Jelinek, Second Woman, Kindohm or Uon. Last year’s “Sibling”, released on Special Guest DJ’s Experiences Ltd was one of the year’s subtle standouts, but Bondy’s music refuses to tether itself to one sound or another, instead hovering around the fertile area between experimental ambient and outre club modes. “Glans Intercum” paces further sideways, toying with dub and drone ideas and sandwiching these sketches between buzzing drum workouts that squeeze texture from collapsing beat templates. Oscillating piquant shocks of vibrant energy with steeply opiated hypnagogia and OOBE-like sensations, the results locate a mind in flux, torn between the need to flex hyper-articulated limbs and becoming lost in discretely introspective ambient interzones. The eight tracks course from a sort of kaotic power ambient energy to a lushly unresolved daydream serenity through alternately convulsive and temple-smushing turns. ‘Rest’ opens with a bitter explosion of digital scree that escalates into pill-belly jitters, and ‘Ash In Emerald Casing’ keeps toes off the ground with Rian Treanor-levels of pointillist hyper-footwork tekkers, contrasting with the DJ Python-esque slithering vox and atmospheric mulch of ‘Spangled (With Stella).’ From the skittish ‘Drip on Nape’ his circles start to bleed into one, with the aqueous shimmer of ‘Ven’ and Stella’s vocals returns on ‘2404’ to blur the lines between up/down, where ’Skizz’ enacts a sort of perpendicular grime and he ultimately comes to bliss out in the fragile glassine fractals wilting from the closing title tune.

2022 repress

Exael debuts on Huerco S’ West Mineral Ltd with ‘Collex’, a deep, impressionistic album of ambient soundscaping recorded between Chicago and Berlin, following an excellent split EP with likeminded producer, Ryan Fall a.k.a. uon, as well as a number of compilation appearances with Allergy Season/Discwoman, Physical Therapy and Carpet Group Recordings, the latter of whom coincidentally issued Exael’s self-titled 2017 album under the Naemi alias.Crafted over the two years since their first album, ‘Collex’ finds Exael mining a finer and more elusive variant of ambient music, connecting dots between classic vapor-trail dub and hyper-modern inversions you’d more readily associate with 0PN or Kara-Lis Coverdale. With a richly refractive, iridescent quality, it marks the inward/outward distance travelled between concrète and electronic textures and spatial parameters, manipulating notions of stasis and kinesis with an unfathomable, gaseous quality that also reminds us of classic Vladislav Delay and Robert Henke’s site-specific work. From the milky plumes of ‘Into Deep’, thru the scudding subaquatic electro-dub of ‘Split’, to the bristling gunk of ‘Choeo3’ and the Wanda Group-like subsidence of ‘Cart’, to the lushly fractious flux of ‘Glass In Plastic (with Arad Acid)’ and ‘Anc Alt’, Exael maintains a cool head despite the disorienting G-force and upended context, elaborating a form of simulacra that uncannily reflects the real world’s realigned ideas about gender, mental health, and emotional wealth.Offering a modernist re-vision of classic Chain Reaction and early 00’s dub inversions, it’s an uncanny reminder of a relatively recent era in electronic music that seems far out of reach in the present climate, a perfect accompaniment to that brilliant Pendant album that kicked this fine label off earlier this year.

‘Serwed IV’ mines the vaults for tinny ‘90s workstation bells and FM pads placed alongside rigorously
designed sci-fi drums and textures. The duo take inspiration from commercial background music, from film,
documentaries, adverts and installations, re-contextualised with a modern sheen.
Album opener ‘Glare’ deploys Blade Runner-esque midi-woodwind and 4th world pads, and ‘Beroca’ takes us
straight to Dopplereffekt’s drumless lab, with added blue-skied textures. ‘Contrail’ is even more stark, with
a simulated harp riff that sounds like it was snatched from Kara-Lis Coverdale’s ‘Aftertouches’, bent around
trapdoor slams and simmering drones. On ‘Smart Home’, the duo nod to YMO, using brittle percussion and
simulated instruments to capture the mood, enhanced by dub effects and plucked strings like an edit of
Laurie Anderson’s peerless ‘Late Show’, visions of ‘Home of The Brave’ flashing before our eyes.
On ‘Heat Shield’, wormy, generative rushes add sparkle to blurry hardcore vocals, ‘Technics’ turns dub techno
to wavy plastic and ‘Phoneme’ pairs vibrating high-end with fudged dub and irregular pulses like some re-
factored IDM blueprint. We end with ‘Bloomin’s’ Serotonin rush, all gleaming contours and loved-up energies,
the best flashback
