This year marks 25 years since Oasis’ two iconic record breaking live concerts at Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire on the 10th and 11th August 1996. The shows were both the pinnacle of the band’s success and a landmark gathering for a generation of young people.

Released alongside the cinema debut of the feature length documentary film of the event, ‘Oasis Knebworth 1996’ is the definitive live recording featuring a setlist packed with stone cold classics album taken from across both nights of the concert, from the opening salvoes of ‘Columbia’ and ‘Acquiesce’, to ‘Champagne Supernova’, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, ‘Live Forever’, an orchestra backed ‘I Am The Walrus’, and ‘Wonderwall’ the first song from the 1990’s to reach over one billion streams on Spotify and universally loved anthem.

Another psych holy grail, finally seeing the light of day. Oasis was an American rock band from Marin County, California active in the 1970s. They eventually morphed from the prog-folk ensemble R J Fox. Their self-titled debut album was released as a private press in 1973 by the Cranbus label in a small run of 150 copies, imagine that…The record was in fact never released in the States but only in Canada, such a mystery today. Coming from the west coast the band - led by female vocalist and eclectic piano player Sherry Fox – was certainly informed by local stalwarts (Ultimate Spinach and Jefferson Airplane may come to mind) but had certain similarities with the Allman Brothers country rock guitars and David Crosby vocal harmonies circa ‘If I Could Only Remember My Name’. Not to mention the key jazz folk albums of Joni Mitchell. Here’s a superb psychedelic folk rock manifesto, still fascinating and over the top, in the name of universal love.

Countless stage experiences and adversities

In the early 1990s, Oasis consisted of five members: brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, Paul Bonehead Arthurs, Paul Guigsy McGuigan and Tony McCarroll. The members of Oasis lived in a working-class neighborhood and were drawn to music from a young age. Inspired by bands like The Beatles and The Stone Roses, they began writing their own songs and dreaming of making it big in the music industry. During this time before their fame, Oasis played countless gigs in small venues and local pubs to hone their sound and stage presence. They often faced adversity in appealing to a wider audience and securing record deals. Their persistence paid off, however, when Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, took notice and signed them in 1993. In those early days, Oasis’ music exuded a raw and energetic sound that combined the buzz of Britpop with the anthemic quality of rock ‘n’ roll. For all their hardships, Oasis’ early years were marked by ambition and a rebellious spirit. They embodied the working-class ethos in which they had grown up, and their gritty authenticity resonated with a generation yearning for a voice to express their own experiences.

Evergreens and headliners

Their debut album Definitely Maybe (1994) catapulted Oasis to fame with anthemic hits like Live Forever and Supersonic. It was followed by (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? (1995), which included Don’t Look Back in Anger and their most famous song, Wonderwall. The vinyl made Oasis a worldwide phenomenon and established them as Britpop pioneers. In 1997, Oasis released Be Here Now, which at the time became the fastest-selling album in British history. It received mixed reviews, but tracks like D’You Know What I Mean? and Stand by Me proved the band’s stadium-filling sound. It was followed by The Masterplan (1998), which featured B-sides and unreleased tracks that further proved Oasis’ songwriting chops. Their fourth studio album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000), departed from their earlier sound and experimented with psychedelic and electronic elements. Standout tracks included Go Let It Out and Who Feels Love? Oasis’ later vinyls included Heathen Chemistry (2002) and Don’t Believe the Truth (2005), on which the Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel shared songwriting duties. These albums included hits such as The Hindu Times and Lyla, and demonstrated the band’s ability to evolve while maintaining their distinctive sound. On their last studio album, Dig Out Your Soul (2008), they returned to their rock roots with tracks like The Shock of the Lightning and Falling Down.

Larger-than-life personalities

Their unique sound, rebellious attitude, and larger-than-life personalities captivated an entire generation and left a lasting mark on the music industry. Their music resonated with a generation disillusioned with the grunge movement, offering an alternative sound characterized by catchy melodies and relatable lyrics. Songs like Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back in Anger became instant classics, and the band’s popularity skyrocketed. Oasis’ influence went beyond their music. They embodied the spirit of working-class youth with their defiant attitude and rebellious demeanor. Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, the band’s frontmen, became cult figures known for their infamous feuds, sharp wits and memorable interviews. Their contentious relationship often overshadowed their music, but also added to their mystique and kept them in the headlines. At the height of their success, Oasis achieved unprecedented commercial success, selling millions of albums worldwide and headlining major concerts and festivals. Their influence on subsequent bands and artists cannot be overstated. They inspired a wave of Britpop bands and helped define the sound of the era. Despite their turbulent internal dynamics, Oasis has managed to leave a lasting legacy.
