It’s True What They Say is the debut EP from Edinburgh-based, husband-and-wife duo Sarah/Shaun (pronounced simply Sarah Shaun), aka Sarah and Shaun McLachlan (pronounced “McLochlin”).

“Sarah and I both have a love for nostalgia,” explains Shaun. “We watched that amazing old 80’s Sci-Fi, (John) Carpenter movie, Starman, a few months back. Myself and my brother David used to watch it all the time. We must have been, roughly, 5-7 at the time. I remember loving the movie but the end, you know, with the beautiful, atmospheric, synth ending, I love that particular moment the most - best part of the movie, you know, when he goes home… It’s heartbreaking but stunning, all the same. It’s the music that moves you most… It did when I was 5 and it still does to this day. It must have had some form of a (much deeper) impact on me.”

The duo narrates stories across themes of love, hope, family, friends, dreams and sadness - the good that comes with the bad in everyday life, not just on a personal scale but within a community as well.

“Starbed is the first song I have ever written and just came out of the blue really, with Shaun playing a melody and me singing along,” says Sarah. “It’s simple and just about two people in love. Love songs are always the best songs, after all… Music has been a big part of my life from a young age. I was unwillingly dragged to piano and violin lessons, which I’m thankful for now! I’d say the first band I really became obsessed with growing up were the Beatles, and on the back of that a lot of 60s music and fashion. From then on, I had a love for music.”

“Shaun definitely opened my ears to a lot of sounds and got me thinking about soundtracks and all the noises that can be made,” she goes on. “We love just spending time experimenting in the house with instruments, pedals etc and Ali is a real magician to work with, too…”

The recordings took place over the summers of 2022 and 2023, with fellow Delta Mainline member Ali Chisholm (aka Jaguar Eyes) plus long-term friend and collaborator Gavin King. Further collaboration then came via the ‘net from the (international) likes of Chris Dixie Darley (Father John Misty), Darren Coghill (Neon Waltz) and Daniel Land (The Modern Painters), among others (see a full list of credits below).

Both Sarah and Shaun have a love for uber-soundtrack producers such as Hanz Zimmer, Max Richter, Cliff Martinez plus live acts such as Beach House, Spiritualized, M83, Suicide, Moby and OMD (to name a few). Shaun also credits the work of Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein (from Survive) on the Stranger Things score… “Even a moment in a movie, whether it be just 30 seconds during a particular scene, it grips you,” he says. But there’s something much deeper at play as well. “Music is a healer,” he goes on, “and I write from my own perspective but more so for others. Once I've done my bit, it doesn't belong to me any longer. It belongs to whoever wants it or needs it.”

The result is a cinematic, synth-wavey, dream poppy and downright beguilingly beautiful body of work. And they’re just getting started…

mmy-nominated Marie Davidson’s first release for Soulwax’s Deewee imprint, ‘Y.A.A.M.’, is produced by longtime collaborator Pierre Guerineau and is a cathartic response to power dynamics within the music industry. The rawness of the original is complemented by a new version by Soulwax, who previously reworked Davidson’s acclaimed ‘Work it’ anthem.

“I’ve read somewhere that to be an artist, you have to be willing to sometimes go where it is the most uncomfortable. About a year ago, after receiving a very condescending email related to the business side of music making, I took the opportunity to write down how I felt about the words and the overall tone of arrogance of what I had just been sent.

Quickly, I found myself having a bit too much fun, words flowing from my fingers to the screen, as I had never seen happen before. All sentences were brief and rhymed effortlessly. Soon enough, I realized that what I was writing was a song.

Music was made as a pure act of catharsis, an exercise in telling things as they are in the most concise way. Y.A.A.M. is a testimony of living with passion and authenticity in a world that thrives on branding and transactional relationships. I found great pleasure in writing this track. Now that it’s time to share the work, I simply hope that it can inspire others to be who they are irreverently. Don’t mind the bad words, it comes straight from the heart. Poly Dance Theatre presents its new show: Warning: killer track! Let's start with side A: an international adventure. Backstage, we meet up with rico OBF, who has recorded MC Waraba, the Malian singer and pioneer of the "Balani show" for his forthcoming album on Blanc Manioc Records, at the dubquake studio. Still backstage, we come across androo, the little pictureditor hanging around, who offers to do a re-interpretation by re-creating a riddim from the vocal.

So here's poet rapper MC Waraba, singing in Bambara and French, telling us a story about a girl's difficult choices over a riddim made in androo. The result is a strange, solid, bewitching and melancholy blend of dub, wave and drill trap music. The references are many and scattered, as always with androo (just take a look at his bedroom). After the pop-epic poem, dub mix versions unfold, from dub vocal, with reminiscence of the delay-cut poem, to deep, robust instrumental straight.

B side: Warning: killer track again! Warning: another kind of Wave-dub-trap. Warning: Identity is theft. Warning: Sound system style: 4 parts! Here, starting with a badly cut sample (against American transparency! long live Brecht!), we wander through a heavy chorus-stepper-weird-club-dub, ranging from the most pop to the most ruff, via the most experimental to the deepest. 4 episodes. One season. To see again and again. To play again and again (if need be). 4 episodes (Warning again: Sound system style: 4 parts!) A series of versions in which the dub mix experiments and pushes the track to its limits.

Title track ALT! has a massive doff of the cap to the driving forces of Krautrock, where Lewis' vocal soars atop stacks of guitars & synths and a solid drumbeat keeps you on track.

'Nowhere To Nowhere' breaks out of the gate with a full spin of the private psychedelic reel, a track that seemingly has no beginning, middle or end but which draws you in from the get-go with stacked guitars & synth lines, a thumping one note bass line, snappy percussion, and a totally far out vocal breakdown.

'Hapi' is a stunning stripped-back big bag of blissfullness with soaring synths & arp lines buddy up with a heart tugging 4 note key lines & guitar plucks alongside a reverb drenched vocal sound from heaven.
Coming across like the soundtrack as you reach the pearly gates whilst also harking back to the true balearic sound of the 70's. There are not enough sunsets in the world would do this justice.

What better way to finish things off than with a cover version of what is probably one of THE staples of the acid house 2nd Summer of love era as Psychederek gives the 808 State classic a full psych rework!
A fave from his live performances, the Manchester anthem is ripped right up to deliver a swoosh filled assault on the senses where pads, synths, guitars & even more synths all stacked and set firmly to 'wow man!' and kept tightly on track by the sublime drumming of Donald Johnson from A Certain Ratio.

Originally chosen as the first single to be taken from Bryan Ferry’s 1987 album ‘Bête Noire’, the groove laden ‘The Right Stuff’ evolved from a collaboration with guitarist, Johnny Marr. Based on Marr’s ‘Money Changes Everything’, written for The Smiths, the track evolved into a slice of sophisticated dancefloor action and, for the clubs, spawned 12”, dub and ‘Brooklyn’ mixes of the track. ‘The Right Stuff’ E.P. brings together the Bête Noire original, plus its ’87 mixes, and a previously unreleased new mix by Johnson Somerset, whose previous credits include remixes for The Temper Trap, alt-J, Duran Duran, Blondie, Katy Perry and Bryan Ferry himself in the shape of his startling reworkings of ‘Song To The Siren’ and ‘Avonmore’. Whilst staying true to the original’s spirit of uptown cool, the slow-burning Johnson Somerset Remix unravels and extends ‘The Right Stuff’ into a smouldering, atmospheric triumph. Blue vinyl.

2024 is the 30th anniversary of the Sinéad O’Connor Single, You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart. The track was written by Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer for the soundtrack to the 1993 film In the Name of the Father. The song was produced by English musician Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass) and Gavin Friday and does not appear on any of O’Connor’s studio albums, but in 1997, it was included on her first compilation album, So Far… The Best Of. This exclusive release for Record Store Day 2024 is on clear vinyl and pulls together the versions of the track released in 1994 as well as the B-Side, The Father and His Wife The Spirit performed by Sinéad and Gavin Friday.

The masterpiece of city pop was tracked down by renowned engineer Tamotsu Yoshida using the latest digital technology from the multi-tapes of the time. The 2023 mix, mastered with vintage analog equipment, will be released in analog format for the first time. Including karaoke of 2023 mix. Following from a.s.o. 's self-titled LP, we have a set of remixes taking their trip-hop torch songs in new and different directions. Under his Lew E moniker, Lewie Day takes 'Go On' for a trip to trance-town. Brooding minor key menace as Alia Seror-O'Neil's melancholic vocal gets twisted into strange shapes, eventually becoming an instrument of its own. Mutating from the organic to the synthetic during an adrenaline-racing breakdown. Day sounds like he's having a great deal of fun playing with and defying the conventions of the genre. Maara explores a similar space on her re-rub of 'My Baby's Got It Out For Me'. Once again, Seror-O'Neil's voice is flexed and warped, spinning around the stereo field, as emotive as she ever sounds but more abstracted. Gossamer light with a heavyweight trance chassis - an iron fist in a lace glove. Rising star Cousin moves in an earthier and more dubwise fashion on his remix of 'Falling Under.' His trademark shuffling, layered percussion comes with gnarly electronics and blissed-out synths. All the while, that vocal refrain leads us through the bong smoke toward the light. A work of restraint and release, the perfect fit for a.s.o. Purelink's redo of 'Rain Down' is closer stylistically to the original. Bubbling synth-bass grooves atop a breakbeat, the vocal chopped and diced tastefully. Balearic street soul vibes, a hypnotic and heady five minutes. Beautiful business.
