Video Age's third album pairs neon-bright 80s pop melodies with a vast range of influences (including Janet Jackson, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney) to create an optimistic sound all their own. The influences vary song to song, but they're all tinted with the same rosy hue, and Singer and multi-instrumentalist Ross Farbe says, "I'm often trying to create a more idealized version of the world I'm in." Video Age's first two albums were about loneliness and discovering oneself, but Pleasure Line takes on a whole new attitude, considering both Ross and songwriting partner Ray Micarelli are getting married this year. "We're feeling the love," Ray says, laughing. But these aren't expressions of one-dimensional puppy love-this is euphoria with depth, ecstasy with complications. Darkness is always lurking somewhere beneath happiness, but in the Video Age, even melancholy sounds like something you can dance to. Ray and Ross share a love for dancefloor hits. Experimentation and play is crucial to their approach, as is collaboration. Joined by band members and multi-instrumentalists Nick Corson and Duncan Troast, Video Age recorded the album together in Ross' New Orleans home studio. Pleasure Line is a salve that protects against cynicism-listening to this album, you can't help but feel the world around you is full of romantic potential.

Blues Lawyer is back on Dark Entries with a new 7” EP of summery alt-pop. Fresh off the heels of their critically acclaimed Dark Entries debut, Sight Gags On The Radio expands the Blues Lawyer universe, one where lovelorn millennials struggle to find their place. The four songs were recorded one afternoon by Rob I. Miller, Blues Lawyer co-founder and chief songwriter, in the band’s Oakland rehearsal space. It was recorded just days before Elyse Schrock (singer, songwriter, drummer, and music video creator) would be leaving the Bay Area – her home for the past decade – due to the soaring cost of living. The first single, “Have Nots,” shows the band moving away from the rapid chord changes that characterized their earlier work towards hazy guitar textures. It is accompanied by a tender music video portrait of the band reuniting in Portland, where Schrock now resides. The video documents the band’s touring life: playing pizza parlors and billiard clubs, sleeping on floors, and killing time between gigs. These touching images are elevated by Schrock’s trademark animations and editing style. Blues Lawyer also experiment with new songwriting configurations on this EP. “True Love’s Only Name,” was musically developed by Blues Lawyer guitarist, Ellen Matthews, lyrically by Miller, and sung by Schrock. Sight Gags On The Radio captures the essence of the band's sound but also reflects their development as songwriters. The outcome is Blues Lawyer’s most compelling artistic proclamation to date. Each 7” is housed in a warm orange toned jacket designed by Eloise Leigh featuring lyrics on the back. 'Ars Erotica (non est mihi)' is edited to last just under 5 minutes, after taking out some verses and arrangements, although keeping intact its psychedelic folk-rock essence, with plenty of fuzz guitars.On the flipside we can find the possibly most interesting recording on this single, clearly showing what the vibe and work method were at the studio: all the musicians playing simultaneously in a chilled-out atmosphere. This edit of 'Rosa d'abril (l'amor s'hi posa)' starts right in the same point where the album edit finishes, with Pau Riba backed by the band Om jamming and some of the guest friends at the studio joining in, including the film producer and script writer Joaquim Jordà, who Riba wrote this song for.

The Bay Area's Smiles are back with their second 7" and what a blast it is. Superbly-crafted pop is the order of the day here, with echoes of everything from prime Teenage Fanclub to Big Star to the southern power-pop of folks like Dwight Twilley and Tommy Hoehn. "Gone For Good" is 3:33 of pop perfection, with a marvelous melody, heavenly harmonies and a bit of a triumphant guitar solo sneaking in at the end. On the flip side we get another gem in "This Boy," a brief tune that still feels fully-formed, rather in the style of fellow West Bay songsmith Tony Molina. It's developing into quite the scene they have down there, and as long as the results are as thrilling as this single we can't wait to hear what's next. Part of the SLR30 Singles Series.

Re-issue of Kolborn's debut album “First Enslavement” - now on limited edition vinyl and CD with all-new remastered sound!! Denmark, 2002. The world was suffering a heavy hangover of Carcass “Heartwork” grooves and “One Kill Wonder”, by The Haunted, was still in the works. Nobody - even the few ones that were lucky enough to grab one of the copies of their “Blessed By Beyond” demo a few years earlier - was expecting the kind of evolution Kolborn presented in their debut album “First Enslavement”. Equal parts brutality and groove, wrapped up in all-rounded technical flawless approach by the band and a clinical production by Jacob Bredahl (Exmortem, Koroded, Hatesphere, Leng T’Che). Firing all-cylinders, the band, led by guitarist Henrik “Heinz” Jacobsen (also of Hatesphere) entered the scene by storm, with the album receiving overwhelming reviews for its musical diversity and brutal groove with a Scandinavian touch of melody. Martin Leth Andersen, vocalist in “First Enslavement”, recalls: “We prepared ourselves mentally by partying all by ourselves in Køng, drinking cheap, warm beer from the almost functioning fridge and having pissing contests in the manure behind the rehearsal quarters”. The result is, to put it simple, the definition of thrash/death metal made with groove in Denmark.

Miranda Zipse is a force of nature. And were we not in the midst of a paralyzing pandemic touting a flagrant lack of reasons to party, you’d be flocking to the nearest dance floor to watusi your ass off to these brand new tunes. Zipse and her musical partner KIM ("the Beat") Sollecito began as a duo in Monterey, California in late 2017. The band moved to New York in 2018 (after a summer residency where they fell in with the veritable cult of Jonathan Toubin and his Soul Clap dance parties) and quickly added keys (dylan Fernandez) and bass (mike Roth) to their lineup. Demonstrably influenced by soul, yé-yé, surf, and the bands they shared bills with in their early West coast days (Tomb Weavers, Mystery Lights, Shoobies) and undeniably groovy, the quartet managed to record a new single before shelter-in-place orders were issued this Spring. In “Such A Fool,” Zipse's commanding rasp is timeless, her delivery effortless, and her growls and wails masterfully employed. The song traps its narrator in the throws of regret, taunted and tortured. Woozy organ obligato yields to a lilting guitar solo and a confessional spoken third verse. B-side “Chillantro” is a casserole of cool—put it on repeat and eat those leftovers all week.

Multiple is the sixth full length record by the prolific maximalists known as LITE. Over the past 16 years, the Japanese quartet has established itself as one of the most influential groups across a host of subgenres. Though usually referred to by touchstones such as "math-rock" or "post-rock," LITE has developed an uncanny ability to fuse their influences into their own unmistakable dialect that defies generic genre classification.At times, Multiple's compositions find themselves at unlikely stylistic intersections. Conversating funk riffs will interweave with challenging rhythmic phrasing, blurring the lines between lead sections, obscuring where passages begin and end. LITE's distinct voice is emphasized in tracks such as "Double" and "4mg Warmth,"where melodies meander incessantly, constantly taking the listener to new territory.While many LITE songs unfold at breakneck pace, others entertain entirely different worlds altogether. In songs "Ring" and "Blizzard," the band tests the limits of their abilities with slowed-down, genre-bending forays into hip-hop and dub. On "Ring," LITE collaborated with rapper Maco Marets and singer Utena Kobayashi, where the latter's talents were also tapped for the song's ethereal steelpan section. As LITE has shown over nearly two decades, there exists no style that they cannot master or otherwise weave into their designs.

Luckily for us, Teddy and the Rough Riders have been burning up the Nashville underground over the past few years. With roots deep in psychedelia, the group stripped back all the trimmings to a Velvets rhythm section and steeped it in a Music Row dive bar for their own brand of country rock that is poppy, precise, well-educated and completely self-aware. What, then, would be the point of an exaggerated drawl or a convenient new interest in roping cattle? The Teddys' sound is country that, somewhat paradoxically, lives and breathes in the city.

So, it is fitting that their A-side single ''I Found Somethin''' throws down a strong psych card, with bassist Ryan Jennings' vocals leading us through a vibrant and playfully painted scene filled with a can of worms, desk drugs and big wet dogs. The second track ''Neon Cowboy'', guided this time by guitarist Jack Quiggins, dives down a rabbit hole of self-reflection and social questioning, with Luke Schneider's atmospheric pedal steel and Nick Swafford's always-tasteful drums giving it real backbone. For fans of The Byrds, Link Wray and CCR. This one's not to be missed.

This is not a band following the latest trend. Detached from the usual style issues Von Spar have exorsized the Zeitgeist and overtaken the discourse. There is no scheme. Anything goes. With rabid audiences worldwide clamoring for a taste of Seattle rockers The Drowns’ latest album Blacked Out, a 7” single release was inevitable! This presented the band and Pirates Press Records with a unique conundrum, however: how do you pick a single with an entire album chock full of wall-to-wall rock ’n roll anthems and no “B-sides”? The only possible answer is this: the double A-side single “Just the Way She Goes” / “1979 Trans Am.” On an album of swaggering, glam-in- fused rock with punk heart, these two standout singles are bound to get fans’ motors revving and hips swaying, all the while building even greater anticipation for the forthcoming album! Both of these singles pay tribute to very different vehicles and the lifestyles that go with them. “Just the Way She Goes” examines the life of a rock band’s relationship with their cantankerous tour van, as a metaphor for perseverance and optimism in the face of life’s adversity. “We all break down from time to time,” relates singer & bassist Andy Wylie, while the music propels the listener forward with enough spirit and energy to overcome any setback. “1979 Trans Am” on the other hand, fronted by singer-guitarist Aaron Rev Peters, is The Drowns’ take on the classic rock ’n roll story of “boy-meets-girl, boy & girl go for a joyride in a classic muscle car,” with a steady backbeat that will get any listener moving!
