The 2K By Gingham L.L. tee was designed by Londoner Janette Beckman who began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for The Face and Melody Maker, when British music pushed every boundary. She had extraordinary access to the musicians topping the U.K. charts, including the Clash, Sex Pistols, Specials, Ramones and she photographed covers for the Police’s first three albums. Her powerful portraits celebrating the music and the attitude of these bands and their fans are collected in ‘Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude, 1977-1982’ PowerHouse Books 2005. Moving to New York in 1982, she was instantly drawn to the Hip Hop scene. Her photographs of pioneers like Afrika Bambaata, Run DMC, Salt’n’Pepa and Grandmaster Flash are collected in ‘The Breaks, Stylin’ & Profilin’ 1982-1990’ PowerHouse Books 2007. Beckman’s editorial assignments have covered celebrities from the worlds of politics, entertainment, sport and fashion for magazines from Esquire to Rolling Stone. Her work has been exhibited at museums and galleries around the world. She lives and works in New York.
