Ben Davis is a long-standing workwear company that has been established in 1935 in San Francisco, California, by the guy that goes by the full name of Benjamin Franklin Davis. Before founding his own brand, Ben Davis’ family has been involved in the US garment industry since the mid-19th century – for example, Ben Davis’ grandfather, Jacob Davis, was the inventor of the original Levi’s jeans, partnering with the namesake fabric merchant to mass produce them. Ben Davis apparel soon became a favorite by construction workers because of its sturdy, rugged, high quality and its functionality. Later, Chicano, Caucasian, and Filipino youth adopted that style, and Ben Davis became popular in several music-related subcultures, especially West Coast rappers – it’s hard to imagine early NWA, King Tee, Dr. Dre or Eazy-E video clips without a Ben Davis shirt. Plus, the brand name has also been cited by numerous emcees during the golden era of hip hop.
