Flora was the Roman goddess of flowers, the fertility of the land, and the coming of spring. Field Notes borrowed her name for their 62nd Quarterly Edition. Three original designs (A, B, and C) by Chicago artist, muralist, and designer Emmy Star Brown grace the covers of these bright, joyful Memo Books.

It‘s been some time since Field Notes offered anything this colorful. These vibrant colors and shapes, printed on high-quality 100#C McCoy cover stock from Sappi, are precisely what we all need to break out of the bleak winter and into the hopeful spring. The artwork is enhanced by the subtle application of contrasting glossy and dull varnishes. Inside you’ll find three distinct page styles: one ruled, one dot graph and one plain, featuring subtle grey ink on excellent Domtar Lynx 60#T paper. Glossy red staples tie it all together, figuratively and literally.

Field Notes Flora - Specifications:

The 60th Field Notes Quarterly Limited Edition, for Fall 2023, is Birch Bark. It’s assimple, elegant, and austere as its name-sake tree. The genus Betula is known for its white, papery bark, evoked here by speckled 110# Mohawk Loop “Snow” cover stock, heavily debossed with just a hint of warm gray.

Bright green birch leaves turn radiant yellow in the autumn. When the leaves are gone in the winter, with snow on the ground, a birch stand becomes colorless, a perfect subject for dreamy black-and-white photos. These three seasonal stages are echoed in the green, yellow, and black staples of the books in each 3-Pack, and also in the graph colors of the 60# Finch Opaque body paper. This is a simple, practical edition; a successor to centuries of notes, proclamations and lists inscribed on birch bark.

Field Notes Birch Bark 3-Pack - specifications:

• proudly printed by the good people of The Graphic Arts Studio, LLC, Barrington, Ill

Signs Of Spring 3-Pack

Field Notes' first limited release for 2022 is the “Signs of Spring” Edition. Despite the weather in Chicago, and, well, everything else, the guys at Field Notes are feeling a touch of optimism and anticipation at HQ lately.

They wanted to produce something bright and warm for this edition, and to do that they focused on the papers. It all started when Field Notes located a batch of Mohawk Via Vellum 80# “Yellow,” a stock they have always loved but never found the right project for, until now. In their estimation, the finish and structure of this paper was absolutely made for embossing and debossing. While they’ve experimented with that in the past, Field Notes really pushed the limits here.

The covers are heavily debossed all over, with three original graphic patterns based on flowers that are among the very first to appear in the North American Spring each year: the Ghost Flower (Mohavea confertiflora) in the Southwest, Quaker Ladies (Houstonia caerulea) in the East, and Contra Costa Goldfields (Lasthenia conjugens) in the San Francisco Bay area. Then the covers were hot-stamped with three luscious, reflective Kurz Luxor Foils.

The dot-graph insides are made from Strathmore’s Cambric 70# text, a truly superb paper. The subtle, linen-like texture gives it a ton of character and Field Notes think writers and artists are really going to love it.

Field Notes Signs Of Spring 3-Pack - Specifications:

• Proudly printed by the good people of Active Graphic, Cicero, Ill.

• Cover and innards printed on a Komori Lithrone S40 40" 6-color offset printing press.
• Bound with a Heidelberg Stitchmaster ST 270 5-pocket saddle stitcher with cover feeder/scorer and Rima RS 10S in-line stacker, with appreciation to Samuel Slocum, George W. McGill, and William J. Brown, the “Founding Fathers of the Staple.”

Field Notes HHV Clothing

Established by Aaron Draplin and Jim Coudal in 2007, the Chicago-based US brand Field Notes pays homage to vintage pocketbooks as well as accessories. Field Notes co-founder Aaron Draplin has been collecting memo books for years and built a large archive, before he had the idea to launch a company that carries on the tradition of these signature US items. So, in late 2006, he decided to produce about 200 notebooks with a Japanese toy press – when he cut the corners of these books, the final product already looked like the books he releases nowadays. After Field Notes released their 14th seasonal limited edition, they decided it was about time to get back to their roots. Field Notes in general, and the National Crop Edition specifically, owe their existence to a tradition of promotional memo books distributed to American farmers over the last hundred years by companies that sold agricultural products.
